My dog went for

My garden strimmer today. Hes not the brightest dog in the world to attack a moving spinning blade.
Lawnmower? No that was acceptable but the strimmer was just a step too far.

Btw hes a reactive rescue and reacts to the oddest things. We are still finding these out.

The list is currently the following

Dogs
Cats
Horses/sheep/ any four legged animal
Drains
The crossing lights at the top of my road (but only those ones no others)
Hats
My dressing gown
Inflatable costumes
Jeremy Clarkson

And now the strimmer

Does anyone elses dog have weird dislikes?

Poor poor French Bulldog owner. Her email sounds incredibly measured in the circumstances.[/quote]
No it was three pages of irrelevant hysterical off the point too-much-information drivel.

@YellowPlant

Mine reacts to brachycephalic dogs too. I have to be constantly on the look out for them. Poor things, as if their lives weren’t hard enough struggling to breathe and then they get a load of aggro from other dogs.
Mine isn’t a fan either He was surrounded by 3 yappy pugs when he was about 8 months old but because he’s large the owner thought it was funny - until he slapped one in the face and it went flying. Ddog not keen on pugs and Frenchies since
Useranon1 · 21/03/2022 15:39

Mine barks at the the visually impaired when using white sticks, and wheelchairs. That's it. It's very awkward Blush

Well tbf they are biological abominations. Dogs can sense shit like that.
redredredredlorry · 21/03/2022 15:48

Joining in with a terrier that hates pugs and frenchies. If he has the opportunity he'd rather hide behind a tree than have one come anywhere near him. If he's forced to face one his snarly tooth comes out fast.

Barneysma2 · 21/03/2022 15:48

My boy isnt keen on the mop - he runs off. He also hated going past a certain manhole for a while - I think he could hear the noises from it (we couldnt) He also doesnt budge if he sees something on the pavement like a bin bag for example. He barks when he sees dogs on our walks - only because he wants to play, he hasnt got an aggressive bone in his body. He saw my friends rabbit for the first time the other day - he wanted to play and chased it none stop round the garden, luckily the rabbit was faster! I think he thought it was a small long eared dog haha

LaurieFairyCake · 21/03/2022 15:56

My pug reacts to dogs randomly

He's thick as mince

And he hates babies crying - he barks and screams. He was put in rescue by someone who had a baby Sad

Norgie · 21/03/2022 16:06

One of my female dogs, now sadly gone over the rainbow bridge, hated men. Any man. She would unusually try to hump the legs of any visiting woman, but she would snarl at men. I still have no idea why, because as far as I'm aware she'd never had a bad experience with a man.
My current daft dog tries to attack aerosol cans. I've had to put a child lock on the cleaning cupboard to stop her getting in and ' killing ' aerosols.
Doing the housework is fun!!

LaraDeSalle · 21/03/2022 16:07

Our daughter attached a GO Pro camera to the harness and the film made for interesting viewing and gave a great insight to how a small size dog sees the world.

A Golden retriever walking in front of him would be the equivalent of a Lion suddenly appearing in front of you and I.

Dogs usually react out of fear rather than aggressiveness, although of course the initial fear can lead to aggression.

That’s why it’s so important to do all you can to try and bombproof them although rescue dogs unfortunately may always be troubled by certain things.

Bideshi I'm sad to hear you're not going to do anything about the situation, I'm sad for your dog and I can't quite understand why you wouldn't try and protect her. It doesn't matter which dog was in the right or wrong, the other dog needed veterinary treatment and you've had a complaint. If one person felt your dog was a threat then another one might also. Can you not just put a sign up warning people? Your dog's done this before and will probably do it again, in my experience these reactivities tend to escalate.

I understand your frustration unfortunately a lot of owners don't understand dog body language. However, I think it would also be safe to assume that a dog left free to roam on a property which has open access to the public is a friendly dog.

userxx · 21/03/2022 16:12

Well firstly it’s a fairly light-hearted thread. The op mentioned her dog attacked other dogs. And secondly she was in her own garden, which perhaps the Frenchie owner should have taken into consideration, and, thirdly she thought he was growling at her. But the whole thing was a ridiculous farce with the Frenchie owner behaving like something out of Greek tragedy over her pathetic freaky apology for a dog.

Bit harsh, blame the people for breeding them, its not the dogs fault it cant breathe.

EleanorDeCleaner · 21/03/2022 16:14

My Patterdale reacted viciously to THE WORLD. She was impossible and 12 years of absolute hell. I adored her but thank goodness she's terrorising over the bridge now! Her most hated things were, well, dogs and people.

My border terrier doesn't react to anything except horses (he thinks they're gigantic and terrifying) and the odd piss-taking cat, he's a dream.

Sorry to read about the brachy dog story, our nephew has a lovely bulldog but it's been savaged so many times it's now very nervous to go out at all. I suspect its because other dogs can't read their facial signals.

Mydogisagentleman · 21/03/2022 16:20

My boy is the friendliest, most chilled boy in the world.
He has an irrational hatred of oozy Buddha. E growls at it, looks sideways and tries to hide from it.
Oozy Buddha was purchased at auction as a 16th century bronze.
After a couple of days it became clear that it was nothing of the sort and hence named oozy.
Dog shits himself if he catches sight of it. We moved it to a cupboard while we decide what to do with it.
Dog has seen it in there once and growls at the cupboard. Hardly terrifying, he is a 10kg Bedlington

loveliesbleeding1 · 21/03/2022 16:20

My dog hates

People sneaking around on tv
People wearing Halloween masks on tv
People wearing hoodies on tv
Small food compost bins on the street
My DH riding his bike

But she’s kind and gentle to everyone and every dog we meet.

toomuchfruit · 21/03/2022 16:28

@Bideshi

My border collie only attacks brachycephalic dogs. She's just had a go at somebody's precious fur baby Frenchie resulting in a 3-page shouty hysterical email ending in 'Shame on you! Shame!' She's pretty chilled otherwise. Cost us the vets fee though - minimal damage but apparently the tiny nick in his ear might scar and spoil his looks. He was hideous, like something painted by Hieronymous Bosch.
I'm not the only dog owner I know who avoids collies. I don't own a flat faced dog but i have met many skittish/aggressive collies. Not sure it's something to be proud of really (owning a dog who attacks other dogs). Perhaps some more training is in order .......
gogohm · 21/03/2022 16:30

Ddog (collie) hates, I mean loaths all motorised transport except our cars that he loves, but barks at vehicles whilst driving unless his crate is covered, dislikes pigeons, crows and seagulls, likes other birds, dislikes staffies or similar crosses, is petrified of of the robot vacuum cleaner but his absolute worst enemy is the cat, they absolutely hate each other with the cat swiping from above and sneaking up when he's sleeping then him snarling and barking. The cat isn't mine but we had to have her

Etinoxaurus · 21/03/2022 16:32

Lovely lovely thread. we lost our lovely girl yesterday. She was 16 and pts at home so as good as could be but just reading about these silly lovely dogs is making me happy cry for you all.

RoastedFerret · 21/03/2022 16:33

I make no apology as a dog lover for despising the modern strain on French bulldog. I think more trauma is caused in two that I know (ie 50%) who have undergone several heart surgeries and will never be well dogs living good doggy lives.

Ah right, so it deserved to be attacked by your dog then Hmm

Champagneforeveryone · 21/03/2022 16:40

DDog2 is anxious and dog reactive, however is well controlled and has (thank goodness) never managed to cause harm.

She is mortally afraid of herons though Grin

Collies are horrid, I've never met a nice one yet. Always try to attack other dogs, usually with the with the tag line of 'oh he/shes very reactive'! TBF their owners always put them on a lead, even in the middle of the forest, but they know their do and are responsible owners For your dog to bite another it must have been out of control, maybe some training for both you and the dog? In the meantime a muzzle would be better, what if it had been a small child? You cant guarantee it would go for a child given its unpredictable temperament

There are some good resources out there to help

YellowLemonYellow · 21/03/2022 16:42

@bahamburger

We are convinced our 8 month old pup has OCD! If anything moves in the house she barks at it! Moved the washing basket? Barks! Mop, cushions, coats, shoes, things on benches/tables, flowers in vases anything she notices has changed positions she goes mental! She also barks at everything in the garden including the windHmm. Out and about she is an absolute joy, never barks and loves everything!
This is so cute.

many many dogs don recognise brachycephalic dogs. They cant read their faces. Another thing the poor snorters have to put up with.

DDog hates anyone in a hat and hoovers.

noblegreenk · 21/03/2022 16:47

@MalfunctioningRobot

Greyhounds. Or dogs wearing coats.

I think the dogs in coats is maybe because it changed their silhouette and she can’t quite read their body language as well. No idea about the greyhounds, she’s never had a bad encounter with one, just taken a dislike to them 🤷‍♀️ Doesn’t help that lots of greyhounds wear coats Grin I always have to keep an eye out and hope I spot them before she does!

Greyhounds have slightly different body language cues to other breeds of dog. These cues are more subtle to other breeds and therefore other dogs tend to miss them. This then causes issues when socialising. IME there are a lot of dogs that don't like greys and greyhounds much prefer to socialise with each other.
OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 21/03/2022 16:55

My terrier hates pugs but likes frenchies. (I put it down to the two nasty, ittle buggers down the road.)
Bils dog (border collie) goes batshit at beeping crossings, kids in scooters, wheelchairs and the Coronation Street theme music.

LadyCatStark · 21/03/2022 17:13

My 1 year old lab is as soft as melted butter and would never dream of letting out a bark unless his ball rolls too close to the tv cabinet but he’s scared of:

Men on ladders
Wheely bins on bin day
Hi vis jackets
Swinging signs
Dogs that bark
Anything that rolls of it’s own accord (in the wind)
