If you like butterflies but don’t like moths, why.

I’ve done a butterfly growing kit before and I now want to a moth one but dh really doesn’t like moths. He can’t explain why but they freak him out.

I find this a lot. Why?

I mean, a lot of species of moths are beautiful. Some are even more beautiful than butterflies.

So what is it?

I feel the same!

It’s their furry bodies and unpredictable behaviour. They are drawn to the light and flutter around your head.

Butterflies don’t do that.

saltnvinegarlover · 20/03/2022 09:31

Plus can moths not do a lot of damage?

FourEyesGood · 20/03/2022 09:34

It’s because moths are made of dust.

I hate both butterflies and moths. Flappy little bastards.

Theworldisquiethere · 20/03/2022 09:35

I only dislike the kind of moths that destroy my beautiful wool jumpers

TheYearOfSmallThings · 20/03/2022 09:36

I'm just really shallow and the butterflies are better looking Grin

DockOTheBay · 20/03/2022 09:37

My DH doesn't like moths because they come in the house and flap around unpredictably. Butterflies are outside and less likely to fly at or around you.

Also the chunky hairy bodies are a bit grim

Chesneyhawkes1 · 20/03/2022 09:38

Because butterflies don't dive bomb you and fly in your face

FlippyFloppyFlappy · 20/03/2022 09:39

Oh God moths scare me more than any other creature (don't mind butterflies).
I've been the same since I was young though, I couldn't go into the bathroom at nighttime if there was one in there.
When I was 10 there was a massive one in the bathroom and I made the huge mistake of switching the light off and leaving the landing light on. Moth decided to fly to the light and smacked me full in the face, I was near hysterical.

userxx · 20/03/2022 09:40

I like both. Never understood the hate for moths.

YouHaveNoAuthorityHereJackie · 20/03/2022 09:40

Butterflies don’t eat my cashmere darling.
They also probably aren’t made of smudge

GCAcademic · 20/03/2022 09:41

This is me, OP. I can’t explain it. I think it may be the way that moths flap their wings and fly at you. I’ve been known to jump out of the bath screaming when they fly in through the bathroom window. I love butterflies.

GCAcademic · 20/03/2022 09:41

“made of smudge” 😂

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 20/03/2022 09:43

@Chesneyhawkes1

Because butterflies don't dive bomb you and fly in your face
This ^^ It’s irrational isn’t it?
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/03/2022 09:43

If you like your bedroom window open at night in the summer, and also like the light on for reading, moths are a PITA because they insist on coming in and flapping around your bedside light.
I do have a Kindle but do like to read a proper book in bed now and then.

Apart from that I have nothing against them.

DrDinosaur · 20/03/2022 09:44

Moths flap around in your bedroom at night. Butterflies stay outside looking pretty in the sunshine.

Annoyedandirritated · 20/03/2022 09:45

I HATE both they are sent from the devil

bowlingalleyblues · 20/03/2022 09:51

Moths ate through my wool carpets
They stop me having windows open on hot summer evenings
They fly at my face and crawl along the ceiling in a sinister manner
Butterflies seem to stay outside and flutter around flowers in a harmless manner

Tonya345 · 20/03/2022 09:55

Moths are hairy and scary, I hate them. They come inside, they crawl, they invade your personal space, they eat your wardrobe.
Butterflies stay outside where they belong. They look pretty on the flowers and they don't get too close.

SunflowerSmith · 20/03/2022 10:03

Butterflies are slower, less hairy, flutter, don't deliberately come near you, don't zoom around like crazy if you switch the light on, only come in your house by accident.

SunflowerSmith · 20/03/2022 10:04

It's a bit like comparing a wasp to a bumble bee.
One is passive one is a bastard just for the sake of it.

Itwasntmeright · 20/03/2022 10:07

I hate moths, they terrify the hell out of me. They bump around the light like idiots or fly at my face, and they are evil dusty things and I hate them.

Piggypiggyoinkoink · 20/03/2022 10:10

Because when I was 5 my younger sibling thought it would be funny to put a live one down the back of my neck. I both froze and became hysterical. My mother eventually extracted it (still alive) and told me it would have been more scared than I was.

Nope.

WingBingo · 20/03/2022 10:13

Seems I am in good company. There are many reasons to dislike them.

Most insects I can handle, but not moths.

MsRinky · 20/03/2022 10:17

I once got a moth inside my ear whilst camping. Had to go to A&E to get it extracted. First they didn't believe me, then they had to drown the bastard by flushing my ear with water, then extract it with long tweezers like something from Silence of the Lambs, at which point my husband passed out and smashed his head open. Bastards.

milcal · 20/03/2022 10:24

Butterflies fly gracefully but moths fly about in a panic.
