If you like butterflies but don’t like moths, why.

I’ve done a butterfly growing kit before and I now want to a moth one but dh really doesn’t like moths. He can’t explain why but they freak him out.

I find this a lot. Why?

I mean, a lot of species of moths are beautiful. Some are even more beautiful than butterflies.

So what is it?

@Theworldisquiethere

I only dislike the kind of moths that destroy my beautiful wool jumpers
And carpets. Totally agree
Soubriquet · 20/03/2022 12:51

Fair enough.

But look at how beautiful these guys are!

WHY IS IT THE SIZE OF A HAND

woodhill · 20/03/2022 12:53

But not in the house. Yes they are pretty

woodhill · 20/03/2022 12:54

Battenburg moth😁

IncompleteSenten · 20/03/2022 12:54

Butterflies don't try to fight you.

Soubriquet · 20/03/2022 12:55

@woodhill

It's way too furry and hand sized!

This. This is what is wrong with moths.

This. Little sods.
BertieBotts · 20/03/2022 13:13

Oh just a warning - that article is fine until you get to the section about "nightmarish bugs". As soon as you get to the picture of the mosquito, just close it and never come back. Trust me.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 20/03/2022 13:17

Because I wear glasses and any light reflects off of my lenses. Moths then dive bomb my face.

SoFriendless · 20/03/2022 13:27

OP I was about to say to all the people who say they’re ugly, what about the rosy maple! Beautiful little thing, wish we had them in the UK.

They have horrible furry bodies, they make a terrifying noise when they fly, they appear every time you put a light on in summer. I hate them.
Last summer an elephant hawkmoth was flying about my bedroom light, I was quite literally paralysed with fear. I could only lie on the bed screaming for someone to take it away.
The next day my might hunter of a cat presented me with one of their caterpillars as tribute! It was as big as my finger and he hadn't even had the good grace to kill the damned thing.

Soubriquet · 20/03/2022 14:21

There are some truly beautiful moths. It’s a shame they get such a bad rep

Moths fly much quicker than butterflies. And usually right up in your face. Hate the little fuckers so much.

Also, butterflies mostly stay outside.
I don't much like them either but when they're outside at least you can get away from them easily enough so they don't give me quite the same fear.

PickAChew · 20/03/2022 14:32

Not all moths can be a nuisance. Some are beautiful. We had a big one in our dining room for a couple of nights, last summer and the bloody thing shat everywhere.

Winkydink · 20/03/2022 14:34

Over the years moths have munched their way through about £1000 of cashmere jumpers and wool suits. Butterflies look beautiful. No comparison. It’s like comparing rats with Guinea pigs.

@Nomorefuckstogive

Horrible furry bodies, lurking in dark corners and coming towards you when you’re unprepared. Oh sorry, that’s DH! Moths are the same.

This has made me cackle!

I like moths, the big furry ones have quite sweet faces I think. DH isn't a fan though, like PPs have said his main objection is that they're dusty.
