Ill on wedding day

It is our 20-somethingth wedding anniversary and our plans to go out for dinner have been scuppered by a horrible flu-type virus (although thankfully not Covid).

The way I've felt today, there is absolutely no way on earth I could have dragged myself to do the school run, let alone been dressed to the nines and in the spotlight at a wedding all day.

Which got me thinking... has anyone ever ended up being really unwell on their wedding day? I don't mean serious, life-changing illness, just crap cold / flu / tummy bug things???

Not a wedding but I got knocked off of my bike a few days before my grandma's funeral. No broken bones but a massively puffy and bruised face which I couldn't quite cover up. Thankfully there weren't any photos taken that day.

Unfortunate timings I have known:

  1. my neighbour had her mastectomy on the same day her mother died in the same hospital.
  1. a friend of mine gave birth to her son on the same day her dp's mother died in the same hospital.
  1. my grandmother gave birth to my father on the same day her own grandmother died.
  1. my boss and his wife went to Mexico for his dd's wedding. Loads of the guests came down with norovirus or something similar (prob from the hotel buffet) on the wedding day.

Not me but my 2 year old DD woke up with a 40 degree temp on the morning of my wedding after previously being fine the night before. I know it wasn't her fault but it kind of ruined the day 😭

elliejjtiny · 16/03/2022 20:19

No but I was really worried about getting ill, my period or an eczema flare up on my wedding day. Also I used to work in a chemist on a Saturday and we used to get stressed out bridesmaids coming in asking for immodium, flu meds etc more often than you would think. Lots of women in early labour coming in for breast pads, nappies and sanitary towels too.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 16/03/2022 20:19

I went on my hen party the night before and was hungover as fuck. Also extremely bloated - so much so, it took two people - including my soon-to-be husband to get the dress on.

I lived abroad, so HAD to have the hen the night before because otherwise half my friends wouldn't be there. On reflection, we probably shouldn't have gone out on the lash....

I was really ill on my wedding day. Spent the whole night with vomiting and diarrhoea. Ex MIL gave me an out of date Valium to help me sleep and it made me literally shit my pants and puke a couple of times. Didn't eat anything all day and drank very little. Felt a bit better at the meal, but was struggling in the church. Had to go and unlace my corset and lie down during the welcome drinks. Recovered by the late evening, thank god, and sent ex DH out to get me a McDonald's and finally had some champagne!

Imnoteatingthat · 16/03/2022 20:27

I was really unwell with a nasty cold/sinus infection - I spent all day dosing myself up and most of the evening reception ‘medicinally’ drinking!
We even cancelled our honeymoon as I wasn’t up to the long drive. I finally felt well 3 days before I was due back at work!

Justilou1 · 16/03/2022 20:28

I had food poisoning on my wedding day. Spent the entire night throwing up (and the other end)… Couldn’t face looking at the food at the reception. Meanwhile, the dress zipped up so perfectly!

@elliejjtiny wow that's extremely late to leave it before getting those kinds of things! I had my hospital bags packed for weeks!!
AllOfUsAreDead · 16/03/2022 20:37

I am scared that I will get ill before my wedding. Going to be avoiding people in the week before. Grin

Yogity · 16/03/2022 20:41

Not ill but came on unexpectedly the morning of my wedding. Aside from cramps and worrying about stains I was horribly bloated and boobs looked too big for my carefully tailored dress 😭

allfurcoatnoknickers · 16/03/2022 20:42

@elliejjtiny I didn't pack my hospital bag until the night before my c-section at 39+3. I like to live on the edge like that Grin.

It stressed hyper-organized DH out no end though. He kept buying cereal bars and trying to make me pack them.

Sweetpeasaremadeofcheese · 16/03/2022 20:51

My Aunt had chicken pox on her wedding day, including all over her face.

USaYwHatNow · 16/03/2022 21:02

Nearly. But self inflicted! I took magnesium supplements which were meant to help with bloating. Well they did, but just a little too well, and the shits finally subsided the night before the wedding 🤦🏻‍♀️ I do however suffer from hemiplegic migraines and I was terrified of having an attack which would of meant cancelling the wedding as I have no cognitive function and can't speak when I have them.

TimeToLose8 · 16/03/2022 21:09

My husband had an ear infection, and took ear drops the day of the wedding (just in case). Wrong thing to do.
He ended up lying on a couch after the meal in the hotel. We then went to a and e (me in my dress), got some antibiotics and good to go for the evening party.

AmperoBlue · 16/03/2022 21:15

My soon to be husband had a heart attack 2 weeks before the wedding. He was in the whole weekend having 3 stents put in and came out in the Wednesday.
Week later we got married as planned.
He still laughs that my first reaction was to say I knew I should have bought wedding insurance. It’s a nervous laugh though.

Gonnagetgoing · 16/03/2022 21:20

Not me but a cousin of mine had norovirus the day before her wedding. Unfortunately she was so sick and had diarrhoea that everything had to be cancelled. She tried Imodium and that pink liquid (pepto bismol) that stops you being sick but she was still sick on it. She even saw her GP as an emergency appt who gave her medicine which would stop her being sick but that didn’t work either.

naffusername · 16/03/2022 21:30

Our best man was at the Church. Missing from the photographs and reception.

Claimed a stomach upset. No idea if it was real. He never told anyone. His wife was at the reception and told the husband "he's not feeling well". She stayed the entire evening.

Hubbie's brother stepped in and did the speeches.

Caelan2018 · 16/03/2022 21:36

Not my own wedding but my hubby was Best man and I got food poisoning thr night before I went but didn't eat or drink till the following day the wedding was beautiful but my first cousins wife has a stomach bug at her own wedding she was vomiting all day any chance she got it was awful

DancingBarefootOnIce · 16/03/2022 21:39

I’m getting married soon and have thought about this. It’s a small inexpensive wedding but it got me thinking about the pressure for the perfect day if you spend ££££ and what if you’re sick. It’d be terrible.

Molly70 · 16/03/2022 21:41

I got married in Hawaii and ate some raw seafood the evening before. I was up all night on the toilet. Fortunately we had a sunset ceremony arranged and I started to feel better in the afternoon.

Diversion · 16/03/2022 21:43

Not ill as such but I spent the two months before my wedding with a mouth full of cold sores, one would go and then another would appear (pre zovirax). I am guessing due to stress, thankfully all healed before my wedding day. I hate to think what my photographs would have looked like otherwise.

littlesnowdropfairy · 16/03/2022 21:58

My best friends Dh was as sick as a small hospital on their wedding day. He missed most of the meal and almost all of the dancing, He was so sick they could t go on their honeymoon and had to go somewhere else a few weeks later.

FurbleSocks · 16/03/2022 21:58

I got food poisoning on my wedding day! DTD (feeling ropey but thinking it was the alcohol) DH rolled over and went to sleep, I spent a couple of hours on the toilet. Not at all how I envisaged my wedding day! Turns out quite a few guests got it too, although it took years to piece them all together as everyone was polite.
