Does anything slimline taste better than the full fat version.

Just having moan really. Lighter butter, lighter philedelphia, lighter cheese, non of them taste anywhere near as good as the original. I also cannot bear the taste if sweetener in drinks. Currently trying to lose a bit of weight and I am doinh OK but really missing an indulgent treat.

@bigbluebus

It's a no from me. Nor are the 'slimline' versions healthier. They're usually full of 'crap' chemicals. Just eat smaller portions of the real stuff and only have sweet things as the occasional treat rather than daily.

I would rather die of dehydration than drink Diet Coke. It tastes like Satan's ball sweat (or so I'd imagine) and I have never understood how my mum can drink it. In fact, the only diet drinks I can stomach are orange Fanta Zero and Aldi's knock-off "orange zero" version. The sweeteners give me a pounding headache though so I'd rather just have the regular version of things in smaller quantities.

The only yoghurt I'll eat is Aldi's full fat apricot ones - it's so thick you can stand your spoon up in it. Fat keeps you feeling full so I'd much rather have that than a watery, sugary fat free one.

daisyjgrey · 15/03/2022 14:02

No.

Phos · 15/03/2022 14:19

Most diet soft drinks taste nicer but they're still not good for you because of the artificial sweeteners, sadly!

worriedatthistime · 15/03/2022 14:50

I prefer diet drinks and find philidelphia light ok as well but think its a case of being used to it

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 15/03/2022 15:01

You might be better reconsidering how you are dieting. Low fat products can be really counter productive.

I would suggest reading Why We Eat (too much) by Dr Andrew Jenkinson

Or at least considering counting carbs rather than going low fat. Then proper butter, full fat cheese and cream would be fine. In fact on many low carb plans they would be encouraged.

Imtoooldforallthis · 15/03/2022 15:17

I've done low carb and really enjoyed it unfortunately it doesn't fit in with family life.

There's a cottage cheese which I think may be from Poland which is so delicious it's hard not to eat a full
pot. Sainsbury and Tesco sells it.

Other cottage cheese is rank in comparison.

Pohtaytoes · 15/03/2022 15:57

Skyr fat free plain yoghurt as well as the strawberry and cherry flavoured fat free one is much better nicer than most other versions, including most full fat yoghurts.

It also isn't stuffed full of "carbs and shite" as the carb obsessed would say.

Imtoooldforallthis · 15/03/2022 16:36

I haven't tried the fever tree tonics so will give those a go and will try the skyr.

Personally I genuinely prefer Coke Zero to normal Coke, same goes with lower fat mince, lamb or beef, they make food much tastier for less calories.

I’d also much rather have a spag bol with a ton of veg than just onion and beef chucked in.

And I prefer wholewheat pasta to white pasta.

Comefromaway · 15/03/2022 16:51

I find semi skimmed milk nicer than full fat.

But other than that o don’t really eat slimline versions of anything although I drink only water, not squash or fizzy drinks.

bigbluebus · 15/03/2022 16:57

The sugar tax (and the diet industry) makes me so cross. It encourages people to drink artificially sweetened drinks whilst making them think they're the healthier option. They are not. Not drinking fizzy drinks is the healthy option. I can't help thinking that somewhere down the line there will be some major health crisis uncovered which is linked to all these artificial sweeteners. There are already some studies published around the effects of sweeteners. I have a friend who is a coke zero addict and inspite of being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and being massively overweight, she refuses to stop drinking it. I'm convinced it's partly to blame for her diabetes. She's now on medication to control her blood sugar levels so clearly drinking sugar free drinks is not helping to reduce her sugar levels.

BogRollBOGOF · 15/03/2022 16:58

I try my best to avoid sweeteners and low fat. Sweetners taste awful, leave hours of cloying aftertaste and give me thumping headaches.

If I have to cut back, I do 5:2 using real foods and swap some of the carb portion for salad. Satisfying enough and nutritious.

cannaethink · 15/03/2022 17:00

The only lower fat stuff I like is semi skimmed milk rather than full fat, and lighter evaporated milk (for crumbles). I eat full fat everything else. When I need to lose weight I cut back on sugar but not fat.

WarmSausageTea · 15/03/2022 17:02

Agree with PP, Fever Tree tonic is really good. I prefer the naturally light or aromatic, DP likes the Mediterranean light. I never used to like tonic on its own, but these I do. (They’re better with gin, though.)

BogRollBOGOF · 15/03/2022 17:03

There are health benefits to the fats in milk, so by removing them, you lose the full nutritional benefit of the milk. Full fat is only 4% fat and therefore a "low fat" product in its own right.

Healthy fats are satisfying and help regulate appetite.

sairiegamp · 15/03/2022 17:08

Reduced salt and sugar Heinz beans are far better.

Wallabyone · 15/03/2022 17:08

I'm on a constant climb to keep my weight where it is, and I agree with others that I'd rather have less of a good thing.

So I still have butter on my bagel, but it's a bagel thin and it's wholemeal, and I put (lots of) smoked salmon on it and it feels like a treat rather than diet food.

I share pudding or have a small portion with a coffee if out.

I have the pizza with the hole and salad in the middle at Pizza Express.

I eat bacon, but not often. I eat healthy 'treat food' like sushi, and steak, for example, to avoid feeling deprived.

But overall, I agree-there is nothing nicer than proper butter, cream cheese, cakes and pastries and crispy bacon!

Mossstitch · 15/03/2022 17:10

Agree re milk, always annoys me that they call it full fat when it is under 5% fat so therefore a low fat food, and the fat is what contains the A & D vitamins. Having said that I prefer skimmed but always bought full cream milk for my kids. Can't stand diet foods in general, prefer smaller amounts of real natural food. Margerine reminds me of engine oil....... Butter always!

MajorCarolDanvers · 15/03/2022 17:11

You get used to them all.

Some of the full fat options now taste awful to me. No way could I drink full fat milk or full sugar coke for example.

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 15/03/2022 17:20

Fevertree Naturally Light drinks are far superior, same flavours, just less sugar and no artificial sweeteners. But that is the only one I can think of.

deadlanguage · 15/03/2022 17:21

I can’t stand full sugar coke, Diet Coke or Coke Zero all the way.

I’ve got the flora proactiv olive spread which is half the calories and fat of butter and very inoffensive.

WashableVelvet · 15/03/2022 17:28

Ricotta is nicer than Philadelphia

Low fat coleslaw (yoghurt base usually) is nicer than the full fat pure mayo kind

Burgerqueenbee · 15/03/2022 17:28

Another vote for Pepsi max (although I know irrelevant to your search OP).
I prefer skimmed milk as I find the others make my tea too creamy tasting, Skyr and Fage are both nice although I do prefer full fat Greek yoghurt - I tend to get what is on offer.
I also prefer a babybel light over a regular one but there isn't much calorie difference.

For snacks I like the Properchips lentil crisps, the sea salt ones, and also pop chips. Salted popcorn is also a good wholegrain option.
