Does anything slimline taste better than the full fat version.

Just having moan really. Lighter butter, lighter philedelphia, lighter cheese, non of them taste anywhere near as good as the original. I also cannot bear the taste if sweetener in drinks. Currently trying to lose a bit of weight and I am doinh OK but really missing an indulgent treat.

Low fat products are terrible for you. They will not assist with weight loss, it's a fricking lie. Do you know what they replace the fat with? Sugar. Yep, more sugar. It's a lose/lose thing. Lose taste/lose money... don't lose weight.

Go for the full fat version and look for the one with the least sugars/carbs. You'll get the taste, good fats and be more likely to lose weight.

I massively prefer Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi, Diet Fanta and Diet lemonade to the tooth burning sugary versions. they taste fresh in the mouth.

The 10 cal jellies are lovely (though expensive) he blueberry and black currant or mango and passionfruit ones are gorgeous.

I love Skyr. It takes a bit of getting used to as its taste is half way between yoghurt and cheese. But a scoop of Skyr with a scoop or frozen blueberries or raspberries, a drizzle of honey and teaspoon of chopped nuts is about 200 -300 cals (depending on how much honey and nuts you add) and makes a wonderful breakfast.

I like the Cathedral mature lighter cheddar and lighter garlic and herb cream cheeses are fine too. Avoid 0 fat products (except Skyr which is naturally very low fat) as they often have a sort of thickener in them that tastes a bit floury. Low fat rather than full fat is fine, though.

But as PP say, smaller portions of real food is often the best answer. I'd rather grate 10g of grana padano on my pasta than 20g of lighter cheddar.

You see I disagree, occasionally someone buys me a gin with slimline and even when I'm not expecting it I can taste it a within a sip. Same with diet coke it has an awful sacherine taste. Obviously not everyone agrees.
I wonder if tasting saccharine (or not) is genetic, like tasting the bitter taste in broccoli? I'm the same as you, drinks with saccharine taste obviously unpleasant to be - my partner doesn't know what I'm talking about.

I'm still cross that the sugar tax has meant that even some drinks with sugar in now also have sweeteners.

Satsumaeater · 15/03/2022 12:36

I drink skimmed milk and use half fat creme fraiche and diet coke/coke zero.

But I eat full fat cheese and yogurt, and full sugar lemonade.

I think it really does depend on taste.

LimeSegment · 15/03/2022 12:37

Diet soft drinks taste good if you don't drink the full sugar type for a while, they begin to taste way way to sweet while the diet ones taste refreshing.

herecomesthehotsteppa · 15/03/2022 12:47

Can't stand no added sugar drinks, I can taste them a mile off. And low fat mayo etc. What's the bloody point?! I refuse to buy anything low fat, as a PP has pointed out they all tend to replace the fat with something equally as "bad" for you. The exception to this is low fat natural yoghurt though. Not the muller light ones full of flavourings and sweeteners (yuk I can feel the texture in my mind)

ARGH I feel so strongly about this Grin

thecatsthecats · 15/03/2022 12:50

Mayonnaise.

Full fat tastes too eggy for my liking.

I agree though generally - full fat, unprocessed food is the way forward. The more unprocessed food you eat, the more you're addiction to additives will be broken. I've lost weight without trying simply by eliminating as much processed shite as possible - still eating homemade cake etc, full fat yogurt with honey.

BorisKilledMyHusband · 15/03/2022 12:51

Fevertree light tonic is delicious and has no saccharine.

BeanStew22 · 15/03/2022 12:52

I think if you switch you will soon adjust (eg I eat low fat Greek yogurt, to me regular Greek yogurt tastes way too fatty)

BUT: it’s a balance and the evidence suggests low fat dairy might not be all that healthy

I think eating less processed food & making your servings of indulgent foods smaller is probably the better way to go about it tbh

HotelCaliforniaOnRepeat · 15/03/2022 12:55

Have you tried the fever tree slimline tonics? They do all the flavours in a slimline version. They are the only brand that I don't taste sweeteners in

Lubeyboobyalt · 15/03/2022 12:55

lots of things that are low fat often taste ok but are pumped full of carbs and shite. Plus as a low fat diet gives you gallstones, dull skin and hair etc I keep well away from them

Full fat items in a properly measured portion are much better for you. Low carb or at least watching the carbs is the only way I will eat now (had a life long battle with my weight and only winning since age 39 to now nearly 42 by being carb and sugar careful)

100 % agree.

If you are worried about weight gain you are far, far better having full fat products and being mindful of your portions.

Workinghardeveryday · 15/03/2022 12:57

Bacon medallions are much nicer, just bacon without the fat and really good on calories.

Bacon sarny with no guilt 😁

Hummingbirdcake · 15/03/2022 12:58

Diet Coke and Pepsi Max in the past.

chickensafari · 15/03/2022 13:00

Most lower fat or sugar free versions are awful, I hate the metallic taste of sweetner (aspartame I think).

There's nothing wrong with a bit of fat, it makes a meal satisfying and stops you over-eating. I do think sugar is very addictive though, and am trying to limit my intake as its so easy to keep going and eat too much.

The only food I think tastes better is the lower fat Hummus in Aldi, for some reason it tastes more lemony and garlicky, and the texture isnt affected by the lower fat content.

Mooserp · 15/03/2022 13:09

Full fat milk is already low fat, and is more nutritious, so I don't see the need to use anything else.

BertieBotts · 15/03/2022 13:19

I don't like the taste of sweeteners. I tend to like lower fat/salt/sugar versions of products as long as they are not replaced with something.

beastlyslumber · 15/03/2022 13:25

@Imtoooldforallthis

Oh and I don't have a really sweet tooth so that help. It's just my idea of indulgent it toasted crumpet, lurpak and full fat philedelphia x 2. Not a scrape of butter and super light cream cheese. I'm well aware I can't eat this if I want to lose weight I'm just six months in and would love to find some genuine super low calorie treats that are not a poor imitation of the original higher calorie versions.
It's not the dairy here that's the problem, it's the carbs. And the lower fat version of yoghurts etc have sugar and sweeteners added.

Lower the carbs (i.e. bread, pasta, rice, potatoes), cut out all added sugar, have full fat everything else. You will lose weight easily.

kittenkipping · 15/03/2022 13:30

I disagree with the vast majority here- Diet Coke is appalling as are most of the sugar free drinks. For me the only exception to this is cans (not bottles! Only the cans) of sprite- where the Sprite Zero tastes better than actual sprite. Otherwise I'm a full fat coke, full fat milk and , if I could get my hands on it- full fat Fanta, full fat squash and full fat lemonade I would- but its increasingly difficult to get proper sugar laden fifth fizz anymore. Much to my dismay.

nearlyspringyay · 15/03/2022 13:46

Not really, I have reverted to full bitter over marg, 10% Greek yoghurt, proper cheese, olive oil etc after years of WW, I just eat less and they're more filling without the added sugar.

I have an occasional can of coke but really only drink sparkling water. Can't stand Diet Coke.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 15/03/2022 13:49

It's a no from me. Nor are the 'slimline' versions healthier. They're usually full of 'crap' chemicals. Just eat smaller portions of the real stuff and only have sweet things as the occasional treat rather than daily.

This. I used to be overweight, despite consumption of diet coke, low fat yoghurt etc. Now I'm a healthy weight and never eat low fat or diet stuff. But I do eat lots of veg, little processed food, and not too much sugar

Babyroobs · 15/03/2022 13:49

Only Pepsi max, it's delicious. I cannot stand full sugar coke.

RinklyRomaine · 15/03/2022 13:51

Low fat, no. Low sugar, quite often.

I find the best thing is to double fruit and veg portions and half fatty portions. Drop the sugar which shouldn't be too hard if you don't have a sweet tooth.

Sofasogood1 · 15/03/2022 13:53

@Mooserp

In what way is it more nutritious? Lower fat milk has the same protein, same if not more levels of vitamins...?
Ducksareruiningmypatio · 15/03/2022 13:53

@PierresPotato

I think when going for a treat just go better and smaller iyswim.
I do this too I've not found anything that tastes better
