Has anybody gone on holiday just by yourself?

I know my manager did it... But I'm tempted to do the same and take the dog with me. Even just a weekend bender with my doggo sounds like my ideal way to disconnect!

Yes in my thirties I went to Kenya for a week. It was quite enjoyable to be honest.

MrsLegend · 15/03/2022 11:47

I've often thought of this.

I've a couple of friends who do this and they love it.

One said that the only issue she has is that people can feel sorry for her and on one occasion a couple in the restaurant kept Inviting her to eat with them. She therefore had to avoid them. She went away on her own to recharge and if she'd wanted company she could have gone with her husband!

irregularegular · 15/03/2022 11:48

Yes. But for me it needs to be somewhere there is lots to do. Most likely in a city. Personally I haven't been away just to chill and I wouldn't particularly want to - but I'm well past the small kids at home stage so that helps!

In late 2020 I nipped over to Stockholm at the last minute for a few days. Rules were changing all the time, so I reckoned that if I didn't just do it (and not attempt to coordinate with anyone) then I probably never would.

In 2018 we travelled as a family to Singapore/Borneo for 2 weeks. I wanted to travel for longer so set of to the Malaysian peninsular 1 week ahead, spent time in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, before meeting them in Singapore. Those were the days!!

Very glad I did both. May one day do it again. There is a lot to be learned from how you experience places when you are not constantly thinking about your travel companions (however lovely!)

GeidiPrimes · 15/03/2022 11:48

I prefer going away on my own as I'm an awkward bugger. Have been to Ibiza and Gambia + Senagal.

My dream is to go to the Azores with my dog, but doesn't really seem practical.

Rosehugger · 15/03/2022 11:50

I went backpacking on my own when I was 21 on a popular backpacking route. It was brilliant, I did make friends with others doing the same thing and travelled with other people sometimes also.

The only thing was, when I had amazing experiences on my own I did sometimes feel that I wish I could share it with someone, and that's what I'd feel about a holiday on my own now. Or life generally! Great for independence and doing exactly what you want to do and when but also the drawback of not sharing the experience with anyone.

Rosehugger · 15/03/2022 11:52

Oh but you would not be on your own, OP. You're never alone with a doggy friend Smile

Sounds wonderful.

LetsGoDoDoDo · 15/03/2022 12:00

I go camping alone sometimes and absolutely love it! I'm not single and have a DD but she sees her dad every tiger weekend so it's easy for me to do this occasionally. DP understands as he occasionally does the same (we have outdoor hobbies).

I spent a week in Italy alone when I was 26 and had the best time! Met some really fun and interesting people and just lived to my own schedule. It was great to have the freedom to be utterly spontaneous.

Why not try a weekend in the UK and see how you like it? I think you might be surprised by how common this is Smile

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 15/03/2022 12:03

I went to Cape Town for a week alone. It was first Christmas that my kids went to their dad's & I didn't want to be celebrating Christmas without them in normal way.
It was fantastic - I had an amazing time & would highly recommend it.

WeirdlyKind · 15/03/2022 12:11

I try to go for at least a few nights every year. Does me a world of good! Can do exactly as you like, no arguments over where to eat or how long to spend somewhere and I absolutely love it!

toomanydogsandcats · 15/03/2022 12:14

I went to Oman a few years ago for a week. It's only an hour away so not a massive deal. I mainly had a great time although I did spend a lot of time on the phone to my other half Grin

NewBrownMouse · 15/03/2022 12:15

Yes! It was wonderful! Go for it.

Mumsgirls · 15/03/2022 12:17

Yes did pre Xmas break at the seaside, used the pool, meals and empty shops. Sheer bliss

ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner · 15/03/2022 12:21

No but I'd fucking go tomorrow if I could, my family are pissing me right off!!

Do it!!

ninnynonny · 15/03/2022 12:29

I've got a few days off work and would really love to just go away to the beach for a night by myself! I feel a bit guilty though and I know dh will be baffled.
Not sure what to do!

jay55 · 15/03/2022 12:37

Yes loads of times. Did a big travel round South America alone. And have done countless trips to the US and European cities.

I don't do beach holidays. Not sure I could face one of those alone.

PleaseBeSeated · 15/03/2022 12:40

Lots of times -- anything from walking the Pennine Way to a week in Florence and Verona to look at art. Another time I rented a lighthouse.

LesLavandes · 15/03/2022 12:47

Yes lots - Europe, Far East, Middle East

custardbear · 15/03/2022 12:52

Yes I took myself off for a week in the canaries because I'd been through extreme stress and I needed a break, unfortunately my in laws would t look after the children so my DH told me to go alone and he'd stay home so I got a much needed break

It was lovely but I did miss everyone

rookiemere · 15/03/2022 12:56

I had a long weekend in London recently as my friend had to drop out. I cheated a bit though as met up with some friends and relatives. I really enjoyed it - took the opportunity to get solo tickets to some great shows (Cabaret opening night Smile) and see some sights I fancied.
I didn't want to eat out alone in the evening, so I had lunch leftovers in my room - which is much less grim than it sounds, as usually DH and I eat out three times a day and I couldn't be bothered with another big meal at dinner time.

BeanStew22 · 15/03/2022 12:56

Yes, several times - to Japan, Cambodia, Croatia etc

I prefer to go to a destination where there is lots to do vs a beach holiday when I’m on my own but I can also see how a relaxing holiday alone would be great too… then I’d get an apartment instead of a hotel

garythesnail · 15/03/2022 13:35

Yes, it's the best! No compromise, just whatever you want to do, when you want to do it, bliss.
It's one of the things I crave in my current life but, sadly, it's not possible at the moment.

tintodeverano2 · 15/03/2022 13:37

I regularly volunteer on language programs in Spain and Italy. You pay for flights there and a couple of nights accommodation and then the week you are "working" room and board is paid for you.

QuebecBagnet · 15/03/2022 14:06

Loads. Been to Thailand on my own.

Currently away in the Lake District on my own. Love it.

thecatsthecats · 15/03/2022 14:11

I did. Cabin in the woods. Barely spoke to another soul for five days. Bliss.

JanisMoplin · 15/03/2022 16:31

Many. many times. In India, Turkey, Cambodia, Thailand, Spain... I like setting my own agenda. I have certain interests that DH does not share. Planning another solo trip to Amsterdam soon.
