Have you turned the heating off yet?

As it’s warmed up this week, I’ve turned the heating off today.

Normally I turn it of 31st March and on 1st October

I thought I’d go early and then see in October how long I can go

Thermostat controlled.

DH is disabled and has compromised circulation. He also can't move around so easily in order to warm up. I'm also too hot so we have a fine balance of compromise.

megletthesecond · 14/03/2022 21:41

ramp I'm cold blooded. I have thermals and a winter duvet but if I'm not moving I get cold in a cold room. The warm air keeps me asleep. I've tried without it so many times. Probably due to low blood pressure.

Allmyfavouritepeople · 14/03/2022 21:41

Yes turned it off on Saturday. Had it on for 3 hours a day in Jan then 2 and a half in Feb and now just switching it on as needed. Treated myself to an hour yesterday because it was damp so will do that as and when but doesn't need to be on a timer and it's not thermostat controlled so it does otherwise go by time.

SallyMcNally · 14/03/2022 21:43

We haven't had it on all winter. We live in a flat in the middle of the block though.

LoveFall · 14/03/2022 21:43

No. It is 7 degrees and pouring cold rain where I live. Plus it is on a thermostat.

amusedbush · 14/03/2022 21:52

We didn’t have the heating on at all over the weekend and I was feeling optimistic but today it felt like the cold had seeped into the walls of the house - it was bitter so I put it back on for a bit this afternoon.

Though a few weeks ago I turned it down several degrees as DH likes to turn this place into a sauna.

Ringmaster27 · 14/03/2022 21:58

It’s been glorious sunshine here for most of today.
For the past few days I’ve only had my heating on for a couple of hours first thing in the morning! I live in a small 3 bed semi, that’s relatively newish build, so it retains heat very well!

Enzbear · 14/03/2022 22:00

It goes on 7.30-9am and at 4pm for an hour, then log burner on about 6pm. Bathroom towel heater is on two hours in the morning four at night. Not had gch on in the day for weeks.

Comefromaway · 14/03/2022 22:04

Mine is on all year round. It comes on only if it drops below a certain temperature controlled by a room stat and TRV’s.

Greyhare · 14/03/2022 22:05

Turned mine off the other day, we have storage heaters so once off they are off, we do have throws and if it's proper chilly we will have a fire as we have an open fire in the sitting room, but I'm also peri-menopausal and my internal heating has gone haywire.

Chloemol · 14/03/2022 22:15

It never goes off, it’s controlled by thermostat

transformandriseup · 14/03/2022 22:46

We have a thermostat but only have it turned on October and Mid April at the latest, we couldn't afford it otherwise:

gamerchick · 14/03/2022 22:51

Haven't hardly had it on all winter. Try and offset the bills a bit and it did the job. No increase come april.

Bit miserable though. Although I've got used to it a bit and find the heating at work unbearable.

Lampface · 14/03/2022 22:51

Up in Aberdeenshire. We had it on for an hour this morning and it's not been on since. Layers and hot water bottle galore at the moment!

Burghwallis · 14/03/2022 22:59

I was given a heated throw for my birthday in January which I thought was such a boring present but it is a revelation! I have it wrapped round me and up my back during the day like a heated car seat when WFH and light the log burner at night which warms everyone up to shorts and t shirt temps. I’ve only put the heating on for overnight guests in the morning since then. I set the thermostat to 5 degrees and it can come on to stop pipes freezing and not before.

userxx · 15/03/2022 06:55

@megletthesecond

No. But I've turned it down to 20° 24/7. This is a big deal to me Blush.

Jesus, how hot do you usually have it ? I'd be melting !

CharSiu · 15/03/2022 07:16

DH feels the cold so the thermostat is at 19.5. He is at work all week this week so I have turned it down to 16 so it stayed off all day yesterday.

LemonsLimes · 15/03/2022 10:59

I've set it so it heats the house to 20 for an hour in the morning when we get up and then again from 3.10 before the kids get home until 11pm. During the day it's set much lower

Blush21 · 15/03/2022 11:05

Mines only on auto over night so it comes on 6am. But I’ve now turned that off. I’ve always only put it on for a few hours as and when needed. It now turned it off in the morning and trying to only
Put it on in the evening for an hour or two. We’ve been battling damp and just redecorated so not turning if off fully just yet. I imagine by the end of the month we won’t need the heating at all unless we have a cold snap

JaninaDuszejko · 15/03/2022 11:20

This all pointless unless people include the following information. Where in the country they live. What kind of property they live in (flat, terrace, semi, detached). How insulated the property is. What people are doing in the house. If they are a warm or cold person and if they have any heath issues.

Someone in a modern insulated flat in London is more than likely going to be able to do without central heating earlier in the year than someone in an old and uninsulated manse in Shetland. Unless the Londoner has a heart condition that significantly affects their ability to move around and the Shetlander spends their day doing a physical job and they have a Rayburn in their kitchen and a peat fire in their sittingroom.

musicviking1 · 15/03/2022 11:31

I went up to the loft and have turned the temp right down on the actual boiler, I've also stopped having it on during the day if I am home. I have thermostats on each floor so I've also just been switching on the downstairs one when needed which still makes it comfortable upstairs. If I'm cold then it's going on but I have definitely been more conscious of usage. My loft is insulated so thankfully a very warm house anyway.

RampantIvy · 15/03/2022 11:33

I agree @JaninaDuszejko

PiesNotGuys · 15/03/2022 11:39

Poorly insulated detached house in the north of England. People are ill in it right now so not doing much. I’m a cold person generally.

Heating has been off for a week and today all the windows and both sets of patio doors are wide open with the weeks washing flapping on the line. It’s full spring!

We don’t use a log burner or any other type of fire. We don’t have heated throws el3ctric blankets oodies or hot water bottles. But you’ve have to claw my fluffy slippers from my cold dead hands before I’d give them up!

Gilead · 15/03/2022 11:54

Yes, but I’ve been in hospital for nearly three weeks!

BeyondPurpleTulips · 15/03/2022 12:14

Turned it off yesterday, same day I paid my first £250 bill 😕

I have thermostat controlled vivaria, so I'm testing whether it's cheaper to have background gas heat, or rely solely on the electric heaters in them...
