Have you turned the heating off yet?

As it’s warmed up this week, I’ve turned the heating off today.

Normally I turn it of 31st March and on 1st October

I thought I’d go early and then see in October how long I can go

Turned it off permanently (until about November!) last night. Was a beautiful day here today.
Regretting it now as it's forecast to be freezing tonight. I've just boiled the kettle for our hot water bottles, as I'm not cracking and putting it back on!

TravellingFrom · 14/03/2022 20:39

No I don’t.
It’s in a timer and thermostat. It will come on if need be. Or not if it’s actually warm enough.

I never understood that attitude of ‘switching the heating off at the end of March’ or whatever.
A few years ago, it was snowing in April. Do you really want to not have the heating on then, just because it’s after the en did March??

Cecilia2016 · 14/03/2022 20:40

@dementedpixie

I dont ever turn it off. I control it by thermostat and timer
Me too.
TravellingFrom · 14/03/2022 20:43

@whyohwhyohwhyohwhywhy

Yes we did.we normally do when it gets this warm as I hate waking up to a stuffy house.

If we just went by thermostat ours would come on when we opened windows and patio doors which would be madness, so I never really understand when people say that, unless they don't open take in fresh air

That’s because what we use inst just the thermostat but a thermostat WITH a timer.

If I open the windows at let’s say 9.00am in the morning, the thermostat will be programmed for 14oC so it won’t come on.
Bu the same token, at 4.00pm, the thermostat will move to 19oC. The heating will not come on if it’s warm enough (or we have the wood burner on which is the case most if the time)

BaileysBreakfast · 14/03/2022 20:43

Ours has barely been on this year. We can’t afford it even now before the price rises so we just wear lots of jumpers. I go to work to get warm

escapingthecity · 14/03/2022 20:45

Longing to. I know I'll be fine with the occasional jumper. But we have a newborn so keeping it on for her.

17CherryTreeLane · 14/03/2022 20:45

@Graphista we have it on for 2 hours in the morning, and longer in the evening, not on in the daytime. I hope that you live in a better insulated house than mine, so it doesn't feel as cold!

milkysmum · 14/03/2022 20:45

It's on a thermostat and it's bloody freezing still so it's on plenty!

Oblomov22 · 14/03/2022 20:46

No, never turn ours off.

Muppetlove · 14/03/2022 20:47

Tried to turn it off but the darn cat whinged to DH her window sill spot was cold so he turned it back on. In fairness the cat hates even cool weather but DH gave in so quickly.

TheFormidableMrsC · 14/03/2022 20:47

I stuck it on for half an hour tonight to take the edge off as I live rurally and the temp has really dropped tonight. I put it on for about the same amount of time in the morning. Otherwise it stays off. Hoping even these short blasts can stop soon!

inheritancetrack · 14/03/2022 20:49

its 6 degrees outside at the moment. definitely staying on for a while, but it didn't come on automaticallty during daylight today

grapewines · 14/03/2022 20:49

It hasn't been on this year.

ivykaty44 · 14/03/2022 20:50

I have a thermostat, but if I opened the windows etc I don’t want the heating coming on.

So rather than reprogram the timers (again) etc I just turn it off

RampantIvy · 14/03/2022 20:51

My heating goes on and off according to the temperature not the calendar. Living on the edge of the Pennines means that ours is on more often than the average mumsnetter's.

That wasn't meant to sound snippy. I realise that the cost of energy these days means that many people can't afford to put their heating on. I spent years shivering from cold because we couldn't afford to heat the house.

Dwightlovesjim · 14/03/2022 20:51

It’s been off for ages. The house is freezing, it’s horrible. The bills have increased though and we can’t afford anymore.

bloodywhitecat · 14/03/2022 20:52

Yes but not by choice, I am running low on oil and want to preserve what I have for hot water.

TravellingFrom · 14/03/2022 20:54

You see I don’t quite understand that.

What temperature do you have for day time if your heating is coming on just because you’ve opened the windows? (Assuming you haven’t left them open for 3~4 hours)

Madre123 · 14/03/2022 20:54

Husband and I are sitting under a heated throw..heating off

Floralnomad · 14/03/2022 20:54

We also don’t ever officially turn ours off it’s all done by thermostat , I’m SE and I’ve just turned it up because I’m really cold this evening .

hattie43 · 14/03/2022 20:56

I still have the heating on , it's cold and one thing I hate is being cold . I also have dogs in the house and the heating is on for them in the day aswell albeit low.

userxx · 14/03/2022 20:58

I just turn the thermostat down so it doesn't kick in. I'd rather layer up with a dressing gown then put the heating on. I've turned into my dad. Shit.

PattyMelt · 14/03/2022 20:59

I put it on first thing so I can shower before work, it's off once everyone is dressed. Then back on when we get cold in the evening. Off again about 9. Our use has fallen when looking at the graphs on the energy company website

Northernsoullover · 14/03/2022 21:00

I turn it off if I get too warm. It was on for an hour this evening. I don't want mould.
