Have you turned the heating off yet?

As it’s warmed up this week, I’ve turned the heating off today.

Normally I turn it of 31st March and on 1st October

I thought I’d go early and then see in October how long I can go

We turned ours off a few weeks ago.

Took · 14/03/2022 21:02

Mine went off just after Christmas. Cant bloody afford it!

My DH got a carers grant last week and it’s to pay for bill, clothes, etc so I was giddy with excitement and put the heating on for a couple of hours! LOOK AT ME WITH NO JUMPER. 🥳

We found during the powercut that followed storm Arwen (off for a week in the middle of North Pennines) that it was cheaper to use the old range in our house. So now we're saving a small fortune by burning ovoids instead of using our modern oil central heating.

The current plan is to let it burn out at the start of the Easter holidays when we go away. We have 3 small kids (0, 4&5) and DH WFH. The house sits at a pretty constant 14 so it's not like we're using it unnecessarily.

Luckily we did some significant tree pruning this winter and hopefully it will have dried sufficiently to use by November time.

*bills, Bill can pay his own way

starfishmummy · 14/03/2022 21:04

Absolutely not. It's on permanently and controlled by thermostat. If it's cold even in "summer" then it comes on if the temperature drops enough.

ivykaty44 · 14/03/2022 21:06

Sorry that was predictive text

It was supposed to say longer than 3/4 hours, I open the windows and often the back door is open

Thermostat is set to 18 on timer and when off it’s set to 14/15

Got up this morning and it was stuffy heating so turned it off

@hattie43

I still have the heating on , it's cold and one thing I hate is being cold . I also have dogs in the house and the heating is on for them in the day aswell albeit low.
You put your heating on for your dogs😂😂😂
AngelinaFibres · 14/03/2022 21:10

We use heating oil. Ordered 900 litres in February when it was 57p a litre. Not looking at the oil club emails at the moment . Stopped when it got to £1.74 a litre . Going to make it last as long as possible. Heating on 8 to 10 in morning ( we are retired so no need to get up early) and 5 to 10 at night. We had a huge delivery of kiln dried firewood today, a load of wood from my brothers DIY jobs and my sons old decking so the woodburner is lit at night in the room we are sitting in. The thermostat tends not to click on after 7pm because the fire warms the air. If its cold between 10 and 5 in the day I light a fire and put a jumper on. Hot shower each once a day whilst the heating is on so the towels are warm.

ShoppingBasket · 14/03/2022 21:10

Have cut mine down drastically, now when I get chilly I put my oodie on. Everyone in the house has one and it seems to have been a great investment as everyone is warm! Mine only comes on now for an hour in morning and possibly at night for an hour though it is not really needed. No more daytime heating. I'm determined not to purchase any more oil. Let's see how far I can push the 200 litres.

dementedpixie · 14/03/2022 21:11

@ivykaty44

I have a thermostat, but if I opened the windows etc I don’t want the heating coming on.

So rather than reprogram the timers (again) etc I just turn it off

If you turn the thermostat down then the heating won't come on
Hellorhighwater · 14/03/2022 21:12

Normally I’m devotee of thermostat. If it’s cold, it’s cold. Whether it’s June or January. But now I suspect I’ll just have to get over myself when my fix runs out at the end of the month and turn it off like most low income households.

DuesToTheDirt · 14/03/2022 21:15

Ne'er turn your heating off till May is out, I say!

livinthedream1995 · 14/03/2022 21:16

Yep ours is off. I’ve also become more conscious about turning lights off when not needed, but apparently everyone in my house is incapable of turning lights off when they leave a room which is excellent.

OnlyTheBravest · 14/03/2022 21:16

It has been warm enough to switch off the auto timers but still needs a boost in the morning and another evening boost for about an hour as the sun sets.

Spectre8 · 14/03/2022 21:18

My heating is never 'on' in the sense on a program or on continuous and off the thermostat. I just pop down and press +1hr when I need it.

But I haven't put it on since last week as its not been cold enough, making doing with a heated blanket which is much cheaper.

LBOCS2 · 14/03/2022 21:19

Mine's on a combination of thermostat and timer - it's on for a couple of hours first thing and in the evening, and only if it goes below 17 degrees. It's been on today, definitely.

I do open my windows but it tends to be during the day to air out the house when the heating isn't on anyway 🤷🏼‍♀️

AwayInMyMind · 14/03/2022 21:20

I haven't had the heating on all winter.

Diversion · 14/03/2022 21:21

We have oil heating and have only had it on for heating twice this winter, it uses very little oil to heat the hot water. We have 2 wood burning stoves and do get some free wood but buy one 2 tonne load of dry logs per year. We have a kettle which sits on one of the stoves and there is just about enough room for a cast iron dutch oven on a trivet on one of them too so I can heat water and cook a casserole. We can also dry the washing beautifully on a clothes maiden when it is lit and the weather outdoors isn't good.

PickAChew · 14/03/2022 21:22

No. The thermostat timer does it for me.

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 14/03/2022 21:23

Yes I bloody well did.
It was after I saw that our bills are going to be going ip by £2k this year! Put a jumper on folks 🤷‍♀️

Halllyup17 · 14/03/2022 21:30

No. Thermostat sits on 16. Most upstairs radiators are off though, as fortunately our house is pretty warm, especially upstairs. It tends to come on first thing on a morning, and just before we go to bed.

megletthesecond · 14/03/2022 21:32

No. But I've turned it down to 20° 24/7. This is a big deal to me Blush.

RampantIvy · 14/03/2022 21:34

Why do you need the heating on at night @megletthesecond?
When you are in bed snuggled under the covers surely it isn't necessary?

singlepringlenotbychoice · 14/03/2022 21:39

I don't switch mine off per say I just turn the thermostat down.

It's at 17 most of the time and it's not clicked on for 4/5 days. I've been conscious of making sure I have socks on and jumper before considering booting the heating.

My heating is on 2 loops I've just put upstairs on for a quick boost before bed because it felt a bit airy.

Mellowyellow222 · 14/03/2022 21:40

In only put it on for an hour or so in the evening. I work from home and wear layers and woolly jumpers. For cold days I wrap an electric throw around me.

The house dips to 12 or 13 at night - but I have a warm duvet.

I am dreading the winter gas bill.
