I just found out you can’t put a chopping board in the dishwasher unless you want it to break 😕

as my family are now laughing at me, it made me wonder what other things have people learnt in adulthood that maybe others assume should be intrinsically known?
@LoveMyPiano plants actually do scream, when they are thirsty, when they are not cared for properly and when they are cut! They also make noises when they’ve been watered.
My 15 year old son thought I was mad when he asked what the popping noise was in the lounge a few nights ago and I told him that it was the big corner plant making noises as it’d just had a drink!
As LoveMyPiano said, there was actually a Tales of the Unexpected episode where a scientist developed a special recording machine which could pick up the cries of a tree each time it was hit with an axe. My DM always used to insist that plants and trees etc do feel pain when they are hurt or harvested.

And my point still stands: just because something is commonly served with fish really really doesn't make it sensible to conclude that the thing itself is a kind of fish.

No one has said it was sensible!! It is just one POTENTIAL explanation for the common mistake.

RandomBasic · 15/03/2022 18:11

I think as pp said the capers issue is confusion between capers/kippers

Phonetically it's kapers/kippers.

If it's not sensible then why argue for it Confused

SleepingStandingUp · 15/03/2022 18:48

@TatianaBis

I mean I can understand people getting capers and gerkins confused, particularly cornichons, but what kind of small fish is round and lives in a jar?
The Caper Fish.

Obviously.

🐟😋😬

I really don’t believe you’re confused by this.
Gwenhwyfar · 15/03/2022 19:19

@JayAlfredPrufrock

I am still baffled about why anyone would think a caper was a fish. Have you never seen a caper? Or eaten one?

I did read somewhere that capers are hand picked.

No. I said in my post that I've never seen one.
Gwenhwyfar · 15/03/2022 19:23

"what kind of small fish is round and lives in a jar?"

I didn't know they were round!
And the comparison with lemon is ridiculous as lemon is a common food and capers aren't.

isthismylifenow · 15/03/2022 19:30

I learned that I can cast YouTube videos straight from YouTube on my phone without having to go look for the casting setting first.

What a plonker...

FrankieStein403 · 15/03/2022 20:03

yup the ancient Egyptians were building mathematically perfect pyramids at the same time the Britons were putting stones in a circle

And 2500 years before the cretans were building multi-roomed stone buildings and a mere 400 years after Stonehenge were building huge multi-storey palaces.

GreenNewDealNow · 15/03/2022 20:03

I used to think puffins were the same size as penguins.

RandomBasic · 15/03/2022 20:08

@GreenNewDealNow

I used to think puffins were the same size as penguins.
Are they ickle or ginormous then?
PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 15/03/2022 20:15

@GreenNewDealNow

I used to think puffins were the same size as penguins.
There are eighteen species of penguin! Puffins are a similar size to the smallest ones, ‘little blue’ penguins.
DadDadDad · 15/03/2022 20:18

The one fact I like about penguins is that some live in the Northern Hemisphere (and I mean in the wild, not zoos etc).

@Violinist64

Up until the coming of the railways, it was quicker to get from Norwich to Amsterdam than from Norwich to London.
Norwich to the US, probably other long distances too, is still best via Amsterdam rather than London. We would need to allow at least 4 1/2 hours to drive to Heathrow, park, check-in etc., the real advantage is the return journey, touch down to key in the door in under an hour. Hopefully the early morning flights will be back on soon!
JudgeJ · 15/03/2022 21:00

@joesev

My newest and best is that you can flip percentages. ie 20% of 50 is equal to 50% of 20. Its been revelatory when trying to do quick calculations of , for example 17% of something. I was always wary of Maths at school so actually finding something useful and interesting in the subject brings wonder.
Coming to the subject as an adult often alters one's perception, carry on finding out interesting things, there are loads!
godmum56 · 15/03/2022 21:08

on from the capers are small round fish thing, a college mate of mine when looking at the chinese takeaway menu asked "are they balls of lobster or is it a delicacy?"

Hyenaormeercat · 15/03/2022 21:22

I didn't know what a caper was until a year or so ago. I've never eaten any. I knew anchovies from something on TV. Again, never eaten them.

BiscuitLover3678 · 15/03/2022 21:40

I thought caper was a fish just like anchovies (as people always hated them on pizzas). Then I finally got some and they definitely weren’t fish.

BiscuitLover3678 · 15/03/2022 21:42

So weird

I think that’s a very flattering rationale.

Not one person has said it was because “they’re harvested from the same areas of the med”.

If you knew that you’d probably know what they are!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 15/03/2022 22:48

Harvesting from a bush.

Harvesting from the sea.

Spot the difference.

LagganBubble · 15/03/2022 23:26

A map of Australia looks like a Scottie dog on one side and a cat barfing up a fur ball on the other....
