I just found out you can’t put a chopping board in the dishwasher unless you want it to break 😕

as my family are now laughing at me, it made me wonder what other things have people learnt in adulthood that maybe others assume should be intrinsically known?

Most poles don't rotate, special ones do to enhance the routines. And they definitely do get friction burn!!

@joesev

@Snippysocks oddly I DID get O level at a B grade. I just have a predisposition to assume I can't do maths. I fear it is a common female trait.
Now this upsets me.

It IS a common female belief because it's ingrained misogyny that creeps in from an early age.
There was even an appallingly misogynistic advert for sanitary towels in Australia that said "absorbs more than you ever did in maths".
I posted angrily about it on failbook, and had Aussie women friends being "unable to see the misogyny" because they were bad at maths.

The misogyny is RIGHT THERE - the assumption that girls are bad at maths - but they'd just absorbed that totally (probably more than the sanitary towel was able to!) and couldn't see it.

There is no inherent reason why girls should be worse at maths than boys - and if they're not led to believe that they are, then I doubt they would be.

joesev · 16/03/2022 14:02

@ThumbWitchesAbroad please be assured I WAS referring to the assumption that I/girls have about maths absolutely not about actual ability. I totally agree that there is no reason nor proof that men are any more likely to excel at, or take to maths more easily.

@ChessieFL there’s an airport in Norwich? Wow! Now it makes sense. I’m so ignorant!

Choppingonions · 16/03/2022 15:00

There are dimples on fast food drinks and if they're pressed in, it's the diet variety.

Maybe everyone knew this.

sueelleker · 16/03/2022 15:10

@Snippysocks ; same here. I was actually recommended to take the CSE maths instead of GCE (which I did, and passed) I then took the GCE in the lower Sixth form, and passed it; much to my maths teacher's surprise!

Sorry. Scottish macaroons, yes.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/03/2022 15:46

macarons are not the same as macaroons. And Scottish macaroons are not the same as macaroons either (although they're more similar than macarons)

Oh back to fish, in British Sign Language there are two signs for fish, one is for when it is fish swimming, the other is for fish that is bein eaten.

They have different words for these in Spanish too - pez vs pescado.

Like Pig and Pork, Cow and Beef, Deer and Venison. Makes sense.

Might there be another for the verb 'to Fish' as well?

PerseverancePays · 16/03/2022 17:39

Love it @sashh that you managed to squeeze in a flower, periwinkle, in your list of seafood.

My adult son, only last year, asked me about the month of February. He had not realised that February has 28 days normally, but 29 days on leap years. When I confirmed this to him, he actually had that 'Mind Blown' expression and just couldnt compute.. He even Googled it and reckoned it was some kind of perverse hoax.. He's 30.

Fairislefandango · 16/03/2022 21:05

Confused How can anyone get to 30 and not know that?!

Andylion · 16/03/2022 21:25

“ I did not know about Moose and Orcas. Mind blown.”

I was suspicious of this and googled. Apparently the biggest predator of moose is the wolf.
