I just found out you can’t put a chopping board in the dishwasher unless you want it to break 😕

as my family are now laughing at me, it made me wonder what other things have people learnt in adulthood that maybe others assume should be intrinsically known?

@diddl

I don't believe the "This Little Piggy" one.

It's just a nonsense rhyme told to kids imo.

I think it's highly likely that that interpretation is right Lots of 'kids' things (nursery rhymes, fairy tales) have serious/cautionary/ origins. They all come out of a cultural context, after all, not from a void.

Stop talking sense!

The channel tunnel isn’t directly through the sea, you don’t see the fish on the other side

I'm learning this now as well then. If someone could really dumb it down for me, I'd appreciate it!

I agree with shoes not ageing well. DH had a pair of shoes he bought yrs ago but had remained packed in their box for over 10yrs. DS’s school shoes didn’t make it to the end of term so DH gave him his “brand new” old shoes to wear on the last day (Speech Day). As the day went in the shoes gradually disintegrated. DS was in and out of the cathedral where they have speech day, leaving a trail of crumbling sole material much to the amusement of his friends.
They were not cheap shoes either.

Wow, just checked the Gutermann seeing thread pp and it’s true! I thought the funny end was for wrapping the loose end of the thread around.
You could hide/store a multitude of things in your sewing box.

If you get up close to a bumblebee and point at it, it will point back.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/03/2022 09:07

are wooden chopping boards hygienic though? are they for bread only?

@Gatehouse77

I was in my early 40s when I found out fauna meant animals. I thought flora and fauna were flowering and non-flowering plants. I think I conflated fauna and fern 🤷‍♀️🙄
@Gatehouse77 ...that's new news to me!! I'm 53🤣

@pawpaws2022

That even when you've been stabbing avocado stones for years, a knife will still slip, go through your hand and be stopped by a bone Also hitting the bone really bloody hurts
You know you can just push them out from the peel side of the avocado, right?
FantasticFebruary · 14/03/2022 09:14

@Lovesabadboy

Seems obvious because it is right there, in the name, but I didn't know, until a couple of years ago (I am 54) that bone china had actual animal bone in it! Shock
Every day is a school day & Im 53!!

After years on MN, I've heard most of these (more than once 🤣🤣) & somethings still make me laugh.. but occasionally there's one I haven't heard and today yours is the second one!!

It goes under the sea bed.

The piggy thing has really upset me. I've been to a very dark place where the whole thing is about choosing which pigs go to slaughter (and which get fattened up / stay home) and the wee wee wee is the cry of fear.

I wore a pair of old but never worn shoes to a wedding. The sole came off just as I was walking into the ceremony...

Am I being thick probably re: Prosecco? Why would anyone want to ‘make’ Prosecco? Surely you just buy it? It’s not like making soft drinks in a Soda Stream because it’s theoretically cheaper.

Well, that’s the reality of the meat industry/animal husbandry/ meat-eating. It’s hardly news, surely?

I learnt recently that pineapples try to eat you as you are eating them, which is why they can make your mouth sore or tingly. It's due to the enzyme it contains (bromelain) which is also what stops your pineapple jelly from setting.

That on the weather app, where it has percentages, that’s the chance of rain and not how rainy it’s going to be (ie 100% rainy is very strong torrential rain, 10% rainy is just a bit of a drizzle).
Im sure I read it was the percentage of the area that will have rain?

So for example, if it says Edinburgh 60% then 60% of Edinburgh will have rain.

Timeturnerplease · 14/03/2022 09:25

My sister just couldn’t compute that North isn’t always ‘forward’ when she was learning to drive. She’s a highly intelligent and successful individual but this concept just escaped her.

@AnchorWHAT

1. That split peas cooked in a pressure cooker take a lot less time than i thought to cook
  1. That overfilling a pressure cooker can cause it to malfunction
  2. That wearing split peas is not a great look
  3. That cleaning split peas off the ceiling -and every other bastard surface in a kitchen- is bloody hard work
If you buy popping corn you don't let your OH put the whole bag into the pan at ponce, however bit the pan is unless it's a catering vat! Don't let him buy popping corn again as you loathe it.

@doodlejump1980

I was 35 when I found out that capers are not tiny fish. 35.
I found this out yesterday! I'm 27.

I saw a tiktok of someone making dandelion capers and I watched because how can dandelions be a substitute for fish? Sent me down a right rabbit hole.

JudgeJ · 14/03/2022 09:29

@OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow

That n block and s block at our school are north and south. 15 years I’ve worked there.
A new member of staff actually asked what N and S stood for and we told him Numpties and Smarties. Before someone jumps on my head, we did tell him the truth eventually!

This is also wrong, sorry.

Say for example the weather says "Manchester 40% rain", it actually means 40% of the area of Manchester will get rain.
