Do I use alot of gas ? What can I do

The pic shows what I use on my gas now and the change after April. This winter I think I probably had heating on for less than 7 days in all. I have a gas hob. And the boiler for hot water.

How much do solar panels help save on electricity

We'd need your kWh usage to see if you use a lot. Is it a gas boiler for the water?

cakeorwine · 12/03/2022 17:02

The average UK house uses 12,000 KWH of gas a year

What does your estimate predict you will use?
What tariff are you on?

SilverHairedCat · 12/03/2022 17:13

No, doesn't look high.

That's incredibly low unless I'm misunderstanding. More like two/three months' worth than a year's.

Chouetted · 12/03/2022 17:18

That's almost spot on what I use, and I've had the heating on 24/7 this winter to combat damp.

So if you don't use your heating, yes, that is quite a lot.

You can't compare as you don't know what she is paying for each unit.
dementedpixie · 12/03/2022 17:39

Without knowing the price per kWh and the number of kW used then noone can say whether its high or low

Cookiecrumble22 · 12/03/2022 17:55

I just tried to look my gas bill up to get the kwh. But it says it can't show me at the moment. Won't even show me Any old bills.

But I have found an electric bill so now wounder if that's alot or average. ? We are a family of 6.

Oh I just noticed it says annual consumption based on actual meter reading is 5,169 kwh

My electricity is about 5786kWh and I would say we are fairly high users

Gas is 14608kWh and is also above average I think

4 bed detached in Scotland with 2 adults and 2 teens - gas central heating/hot water

And are you on a fixed rate tariff or the price cap?

Your electricity is about double the average use.

Gas - your bill should say it somewhere what your predicted use is
What tariff are you on?

dementedpixie · 12/03/2022 18:04

I was on a fixed rate until start of February and am now on the standard variable rate

dementedpixie · 12/03/2022 18:05

I suppose OPs family is larger than average so will use more than the average user would

dementedpixie · 12/03/2022 18:10

I will show my usage for last month. Hopefully the figures will be lower for gas when the weather gets warmer

Do I use alot of gas ? What can I do
PukkaP · 12/03/2022 18:16

I don't know what the average is, but I use approximately 7,000 kWh of electricity per year. I have no gas though.

If that annual consumption is your gas amount then it is quite low. I've used 6381 gas and that is low. I am in a 2 bedroom well insulated new build - and I live alone.

If it's electric it's quite high - electric kwh are usually lower than gas but the cost of it is higher. But for 6 people I wouldn't think it's exceptionally high.

Your gas costs are slightly higher than mine but without knowing unit costs that doesn't mean much.

It's quite easy to find average costs/usage to check yours against

Featuredcreature · 12/03/2022 18:32

Depends how long that amount covers. From. Nov-Feb i used £108 of gas, gas is only used for hot water from taps (electric shower) and heating. The boiler was broken for 2 weeks in January. I only put the heating on if I need to dry clothes, or for an hour when the sun goes down, tbh apart from when the boiler was broken it has been fine, obviously if we had a really cold spell I'd have to use more, we have many blankets and I think this house is pretty well insulated or something because it's chilly sometimes but nothing a knock off oodie can't solve.

It's for the electric

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 12/03/2022 18:33

If you add all the kWh on the OPs bill it comes to 5169kWh for the year so its for the electricity rather than gas.

Hugasauras · 12/03/2022 18:33

I'd say that electric was pretty normal for a family of six. The 'average' figure often quoted is on the low side for most families IME.

So that's high..

Electric showers? A family of 6 is going to potentially use a lot of electricity with those...

Chouetted · 12/03/2022 18:36

Very true that it's not possible to accurately compare consumption without kwh - but I'm on the price cap, so I will be surprised if OP's gas is significantly more expensive. OP hadn't at the time told us size of household, or really any details. My comment was more intended to provide an order of magnitude type comparison - I don't believe gas prices vary that much, though I'm willing to be wrong.

It is still a lot of money on hot water and hob cooking alone (oven is electric, I guess?), and I stand by that.

dementedpixie · 12/03/2022 18:36

I think its the showers for 4 people, the oven and potentially our full sized fridge and freezer that bumps up our bill

cakeorwine · 12/03/2022 18:38

The thing is - I suppose it's how the electricity is used.

Things like lights, TVs etc don't increase massively with more people.

So some items that are high power and are used a lot will be the biggest energy users.

If the OP wants to reduce her electricity bill, she would need to get an understanding of how electrcity is being used in the house.

With a family size of 6, it could be a good educational project.
