Hillsmakeyoustrong, I can't offer advice on how to verify that your money will be used as you intend.

I can only say from experience that, when you make a leap in the dark, you have to be emotionally prepared for the fact that sometimes it will go wrong. It's the cost of doing business.

You have to decide whether that's made up for by all the times it goes right.

If you're as confident as you can be that the money isn't going into hands you'd actively dislike it going to, and you can easily afford it, then if it were me I'd go for it.

But other posters may have better information about the particular field of buying medicines.

NB there have already been scammers moving in on all this support for Ukraine, eg posting their own account numbers in the guise of charitable accounts.

@Hillsmakeyoustrong

Hi guys. NOT virtue signalling, genuinely need advice.

I've been booking airbnbs in Ukraine and having little chats with the hosts. Nothing more than the usual. Last night a verified, longstanding host in odesa asked me to help him get meds to him as the red cross is apparently very slow. The list of items is legit and the pharmacy warehouse in Romania seems legit, I even spoke to the Dr this morning. My concern is it's a lot of money and the collection and delivery is tenuous for obvious reasons. Any words of advice?

hills that's very difficult but if they are long standing and verified, I would probably go for it if I could afford it. Or at least a proportion of it.

But could you approach some of the aid agencies and ask? or more likely a local organisation nearby, the big ones probably have their hands tied with red tape. Or even friends who you happen to know are sympathetic. Awkward conversation but something along the lines of "as it happens, this person in Odessa who seems to be reliable has been asking for meds. We're going for it but it's costing a fair bit, absolutely no worries if you say no but if you wanted to, would you considering contributing?"

As PPs say, talk this through with Red Cross or even the Salvation Army (they have surprising connections).

I'd be surprised if anyone would advise you to do this.

#UPDATE Ukraine says it will demand an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of Russian troops during a fourth round of negotiations to end more than two weeks of fighting after Moscow launched an invasion of #Ukraine️

Ds sent us the "Breaking News" that Russia was asking China for military aid in its invasion of Ukraine last night, with the comment, "The outcome of this could decide the conflict"

I replied saying that in a sense it was good news as It suggests that the “special operation” is going even worse than Russia admits.

Also, China is ultra strict about not directly interfering in other countries' politics, so that it can maintain its stance that no other country can tell it what to do (eg The Uyghurs, Hong Kong). The Belt and Road Initiative is their any of increasing influence through using economics rather than direct political influence.

Ds has just finished a dissertation on China and the internet. The GFW (Great Fire Wall) is much more robust than anything that Russia yet has in place, so it's much more difficult to disseminate "unsanctioned" information. In addition to the army of CCP (Chinese Communist Party) censors, there are bots "searching", plus the ISPs that operate within China compete with themselves to censor content too - otherwise they will get shut down and risk being sent to jail themselves. While young people know some ways to get round it, it is difficult and dangerous. That's why memes became a tool of social protest - and why Winne the Pooh is banned there Shock

But no doubt Russia can and will learn from how China has controlled the internet - and that's the sort of indirect support that China would be more than happy to share Sad

@kavalkada
That is shocking about the drone dropping a bomb on your country, and there having been no warning.
Do you have a local news report about it?

No nomb was dropped. Apparently both places have a town with a very similar name and co ordinates were likely put in for the wrong down. The drone ran out of fuel and crashed.

I think the Drone crash landed, not sure what the range of one is and how long its fuel lasts for ?

kavalkada · 14/03/2022 09:34

This is BBC reporting about the crash:

The US bit of intelligence had the desired effect. Hang Seng plummeted overnight, the Chinese go into talks significantly weaker.

About the only bit of the narrative on the drone story I might buy at face value at this moment is that the locals (as in the city) got no warning..

OTOH given the tensions in that part of the world and the NATO assets we know are in the area between Ukraine and Zagreb I’ll be honest and the story as described in the MSM smells a bit “off”.

CaveMum · 14/03/2022 09:47

From BBC, India obviously not bothered by the sanctions but a positive that Russia appear to be dropping their prices in an attempt to get more money in, which suggests they’re already under pressure.

“India is considering taking up a Russian offer to buy its crude oil and other commodities at discounted prices, Reuters reports two Indian officials as saying.

Russia is facing heavy Western sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine, including several banks being banned from the Swift international payments system.

India, which imports 80% of its oil, usually buys about 2% to 3% of its supplies from Russia but with oil prices on the rise Reuters says the Indian government is looking to reduce its energy costs.

One official tells the news agency they were happy to take the discounted goods and says India is not concerned about getting entangled in sanctions.

They add that work is ongoing to set up a rupee-rouble trade mechanism.“

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 14/03/2022 09:47

Hi guys. I'm part of a group chat now including the director general of the hospital and delivery plans are also making progress. It's still a financial risk but I have to take it as I will regret it if I don't. Thankyou to those who advised me and the advice about emotionally preparing myself for an undesirable outcome was great

52andblue · 14/03/2022 09:50

@kavalkada
I am so sorry that you and your fellow Croations are in this position x

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 14/03/2022 10:05

China this morning has officially denied that a request has been made, and instead has accused the US of disinformation. This is a response I am unsure of what to make.

I think it's a standard denial, China always denies things.

So what do you think really happened?

Iwasfeelingepic · 14/03/2022 10:10
@Iwasfeelingepic Oh Christ. Poor woman. Poor baby. And all the tens of thousands of others.

Goddamn it, it's not just Putin. Those Russian boys are lost but they are killing and destroying. It's their decision and they're making it and ordinary, defenseless people are suffering and will suffer more. And the trauma will go down the generations. Fuck you Putin and fuck you, the soldiers who choose not to hold back.
I know it's such a shame. There was no need for this at all.

“NATO said the alliance's integrated air and missile defence had tracked the object's flight path.

But Croatian officials said the country's authorities weren't informed and that NATO reacted only after questions were posed by journalists.

"If this situation had been detected and resolved in time, in neighbouring countries, we would not be here today," Mr Banozic said.

"We will seek answers to what happened. The defence ministers of Romania and Hungary said that they were evaluating what happened," he said.

"We are waiting for an answer."

WeAreTheHeroes · 14/03/2022 10:20

Is it not a possibility that they couldn't tell whose drone it was? Doesn't make it any less worrying though.

cakeorwine · 14/03/2022 10:25

That sounds unlikely. I would hope that the military are more careful than that.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 14/03/2022 10:26

Had it been a Russian one, then we would have been told.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 14/03/2022 10:30

The news articles about the drone crash , mention parachutes, so it sounds as though it tried to land and then crashed into tree's ?

Wrongkindofovercoat · 14/03/2022 10:30

Or the parachutes deployed on impact ?
