Ds sent us the "Breaking News" that Russia was asking China for military aid in its invasion of Ukraine last night, with the comment, "The outcome of this could decide the conflict"
I replied saying that in a sense it was good news as It suggests that the “special operation” is going even worse than Russia admits.
Also, China is ultra strict about not directly interfering in other countries' politics, so that it can maintain its stance that no other country can tell it what to do (eg The Uyghurs, Hong Kong). The Belt and Road Initiative is their any of increasing influence through using economics rather than direct political influence.
Ds has just finished a dissertation on China and the internet. The GFW (Great Fire Wall) is much more robust than anything that Russia yet has in place, so it's much more difficult to disseminate "unsanctioned" information. In addition to the army of CCP (Chinese Communist Party) censors, there are bots "searching", plus the ISPs that operate within China compete with themselves to censor content too - otherwise they will get shut down and risk being sent to jail themselves. While young people know some ways to get round it, it is difficult and dangerous. That's why memes became a tool of social protest - and why Winne the Pooh is banned there
But no doubt Russia can and will learn from how China has controlled the internet - and that's the sort of indirect support that China would be more than happy to share
