Have you ever woken with a scream?

I had a nightmare last night where I was screaming in my dream.

I shot awake, with my mouth open but I didn’t make a sound.

Has anyone ever actually woke up with a scream or is that a movie thing?

I've only done the silent one, I shout at the top of my voice though. I'd shit myself if I was woken up to screaming.

Haggisfish3 · 11/03/2022 08:28

Yes. Relatively often!

DeliaDinglehopper · 11/03/2022 08:28

I’ve woken myself up by screaming before. I was under a lot of stress at the time.

ParkheadParadise · 11/03/2022 08:31

Yes, I have.
After my dd died I would occasionally wake up with a scream. Mostly I would wake up with tears streaming down my face. It happened for months after she died.

Parkhead, I'm so sorry. X

Not screaming, but crying, laughing, talking and once miaowing. The miaowing dream was a good one, I was enjoying it Grin

Many years ago, DH and I both woke up and sat bolt upright in bed screaming simultaneously. Neither of us could remember a nightmare or anything that could have triggered it. It was very weird - I'm assuming that one of us started screaming and that instantly made the other scream, but it felt instantaneous to us, like a proper movie moment!

MirandaWest · 11/03/2022 09:54

I wake up screaming relatively often. Did it last night - oddly I’d forgotten about it until I read this thread.

amusedbush · 11/03/2022 09:58

I’ve woken up crying a few times (most recently because I was dreaming about my lovely grandad, who died in 2017) but never screaming. I remember having nightmares as a child and I felt like I was shouting for my dad but nothing came out.

Yes, a new person in my life suddenly behaved in a very similar way to my abusive ex. I woke up screaming that night. I opened my eyes and saw something that wasn't there. It's happened a couple of times since - I think I've handled something during the day but it comes out at night.

UnGoogleable · 11/03/2022 10:09

I have woken up doing a sort of strangled scream - so in my dream I'm screaming loud, but I wake up doing a quieter version of it. It makes my dog very worried.

I once woke myself up croaking the word 'Murder'.....

Time40 · 11/03/2022 10:10

Yes, but only twice in my life.

EthicalNonMahogany · 11/03/2022 10:12

Only when I dream I'm visiting the Sistine Chapel.

Just the once - I was staying in a mixed dorm in a dodgy hostel in Berlin. Suddenly woke up sitting bolt upright and screaming - as was my friend who was with me.

Turns out one of the guys staying in the dorm (a stranger to us) had habitual night terrors and often wakes up screaming - and apparently my response to being woken up by a screaming man is to join in.

Who stays in a mixed dorm when they have night terrors without warning anyone?!

The most worrying thing was that no-one came to knock on the door and check we were ok - depsite at least two women screaming like they were being murdered!

TarcasticSwat · 11/03/2022 11:05

Yes, I sometimes wake up screaming or whimpering like I'm crying. It's normally when I'm really anxious and light-sleeping which leaves me susceptible to sleep-walking as well as sleep-shouting and screaming. So anybody else who is waking up screaming is not having a deep sleep.

Madbadandusuallysad · 11/03/2022 20:02

My mother used to do this alot, actually scream and sort of whine, like a person in danger scared, I would rush in to wake her from it and some mornings she wouldn't remember at all that it has happened. It happened to her for a few years but then just stopped. Very unsettling.

MakeThingsRight · 11/03/2022 20:05

Usually once a week or so. My daughter shouts a sleepy you okay Mum? Yep and all back to sleep. Shit my partner up when he first stayed over 🤣

Inthetropics · 11/03/2022 20:12

Yes and it's not that rare for me. I wish I didn't because DP gets very VERY scared when it happens and doesn't understand that I can't just decide not to do it! Hmm

PenCreed · 11/03/2022 20:22

I've done it a couple of times, and I can still remember the dreams that made me scream. I've woken myself up by hitting out in my dream (narrowly missing DH's headConfused), by laughing, by shouting "no" and, on one occasion, sitting up with my hand held out to give something to someone.

I'm apparently quite active in my sleep - I have been known to snuggle up to DH in my sleep when he gets into bed, which is slightly sweeter than the time I nearly thumped him.

TroysMammy · 11/03/2022 20:24

My then husband woke me up as I was panting in my sleep. He thought I was having a sexy dream. In reality someone was chasing me around the garden.

PaperMonster · 11/03/2022 20:29

I’ve woken myself up by screaming in a bad dream.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 11/03/2022 20:35

I feel like I'm screaming, but I just can't get it out. I end up moaning and my DH has to wake me up.

Happens a lot, I am scared of a certain rodent and dream of them frequently.

AtomicBlondeRose · 11/03/2022 20:40

Yes, a few times. Since the war in Ukraine started I’ve had two nightmares about being trapped underground and woke up screaming from one of them.

AHungryCaterpillar · 11/03/2022 20:44

Yes but it’s because someone actually woke me up rather than just waking up myself so not sure if that counts
