A couple of questions re Lidl

There is a new-ish Lidl near me. I normally go to one of the big 4 as it's within walking distance. But this Lidl opened a year back so thought I'd try it out.

It seems a strange size, not as big as a standard supermarket but not as small as a Tesco Extra, it's maybe the size of 2 or 3 Tesco Extras put together. One thing I wanted they just didn't carry at all.

Anyway I've been in a couple of times now, once at 19.30 and once a week later just 15 mins after store opening and on both occasions there was no milk, the cages were all bare. Not just the quantity or type of milk I wanted, literally no milk of any kind.

So does Lidl have issues with milk supply or deliveries or something as that is weird to have happened twice?

Secondly I noticed they had a sectioned with themed stuff. The first time I went it was Italian and just today I saw and bought Spanish stuff.
Is there a different theme 52 weeks of the year? Seemed fun anyway.

Yes Special buys vary. You'll find American food in July, and german food in October for example (Independence day, Oktoberfest)

Milk... I'm guessing they hadn't had their morning delivery at the time you went, and had run out by your evening visit. I've had the same in Asda before!

Babyroobs · 09/03/2022 19:36

The bakery at our local Lidl is usually stripped bare by 12 noon. I've never noticed there being no milk but never go in the evening. I love Lidl.

BertieBotts · 09/03/2022 19:39

IME when a new supermarket opens up it takes them a while to gauge the demand and so they tend to have supply issues with certain products initially, especially short life products like milk. I expect it will improve over the next couple of weeks.

ClariceQuiff · 09/03/2022 19:41

Look online for what special offers and themes are coming up - saves a wasted trip.

Look out as well for vouchers - there's sometimes one for £10 off if you spend £40 - check the leaflets instore.

Never rely on finding any particular item there - their slogan is 'when it's gone, it's gone.'

BarbaraofSeville · 09/03/2022 20:01

Have you seriously not come across Lidl and the themed weeks before? Confused

lljkk · 09/03/2022 20:49

Ours has supply chain issues, too, but then so does local Sainsbury;s.
Lidl has been out of stock on the dog food I want for many weeks.

Howmanysleepsnow · 09/03/2022 21:29

The themed weeks run Thursday to Thursday. This week was Portugal. Tomorrow is the start of Greek Islands.

Porfre · 09/03/2022 21:34

So thing about lifl and aldi is, they have a section in the middle.
'Middle of lidl'
Every Thursday and Sunday they have different items they set out.

Every week there will be a leaflet you can get on your way out that tells you what special food or items they will have on offer.- or just do what I do and check their website.

It will also tell you about their food themes.

Pegasussnail · 09/03/2022 21:42

That's strange about the milk. Our Lidl has a full stock of basics - never had an issue of milk or bread running out. I stay out of the middle of Lidl (I would buy too much junk)

I do my main shop there all the time but if I couldn't get things like milk I wouldn't bother going.

Pegasussnail · 09/03/2022 21:43

Also meant to say get the app if you don't have it already

OP says they have only been a few times so not sure where they would have come across it before- I hadn't. Mainly as all of their food is rank imo, I'd rather have less food that doesn't taste gross!

Because the Lidl bakery is DELICIOUS
oldtableleg · 09/03/2022 22:08

"What are they selling?"

Baked beans, bacon, chips, scampi, lots of cheddars, "English snack box" (fish fingers mozzarella sticks potato wedges), stilton, "English sauce", cod, corned beef, gin, fake Bailey's, scotch, Guinness, tea Grin

(just got Danish based dh to check!)

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 09/03/2022 22:09

Fish n chips, cheese, corned beef.

Not as good as a variety as pre Brexit.

also Great Britain & Ireland week in the Netherlands - they have porridge, fudge, shortbread, blackcurrant syrup, liquorice allsorts, marmalade, scones (which look like brioche!) & Lee & Perrin's (they also have the essential snack box ;) )

Recipe suggestions include - fish & chips, scotch eggs, shepherd's & cottage pies & bacon.

oldtableleg · 09/03/2022 22:15

unsurprisingly French Lidl don't seem to be joining the British food celebration Wink

I don't have a car so until this one arrived in my area, no.

Aka the "aisle of shite"

It's part of the wonderful randomness that is Lidl. Mine had also run out of bread tonight so maybe they have supply chain issues at the moment?

GirlOfTudor · 09/03/2022 23:33

There's regularly been a milk shortage at my local Lidl.
Yes they do themed food weeks. Doubt it's every week though.

😂

I am very blessed to live between Aldi and Lidl! Aldi is cheaper I think, well I tend to spend less there. Both the fruit and veg sections are not great but ok. Aldi toilet roll is superior. Lidl has more branded items and brilliant colored cards/ papers. They both do pretty good, cheap baking ingredients.

ZenNudist · 09/03/2022 23:47

I shop at lidl from time to time. Veg is better quality than Aldi. They have a good quality selection of meat and fish although the better stuff isn't cheap.

The Italian was the first time I'd seen a themed week. I was very impressed. Spent a fortune. Lots of yummy stuff!!

Never any problem with milk supply in mine.

I don't rate the household items and the wine is always so so. Don't think much to their convenience food.

I go for the pastries and then get side tracked!
