A couple of questions re Lidl

There is a new-ish Lidl near me. I normally go to one of the big 4 as it's within walking distance. But this Lidl opened a year back so thought I'd try it out.

It seems a strange size, not as big as a standard supermarket but not as small as a Tesco Extra, it's maybe the size of 2 or 3 Tesco Extras put together. One thing I wanted they just didn't carry at all.

Anyway I've been in a couple of times now, once at 19.30 and once a week later just 15 mins after store opening and on both occasions there was no milk, the cages were all bare. Not just the quantity or type of milk I wanted, literally no milk of any kind.

So does Lidl have issues with milk supply or deliveries or something as that is weird to have happened twice?

Secondly I noticed they had a sectioned with themed stuff. The first time I went it was Italian and just today I saw and bought Spanish stuff.
Is there a different theme 52 weeks of the year? Seemed fun anyway.

.
Yes they do themed food weeks. Doubt it's every week though

Yes it is every week. I think its just december that isnt themed internationally as its all festive stuff. Italian Spanish and French weeks are really good.

Its worth having the lidl plus app on your phone too as you get a free item from the bakery when you spend £50, £2 off for £100 and £10 off once you've spent £200 each month as well as vouchers on there too.

Middle of Lidl is fun. Many things you didn't know you needed. It's the same with Aldi.

crackofdoom · 09/03/2022 23:57

Greeeek weeeeeek!!
I find if you shop there regularly, you can get most of your non food essentials, sooner or later. Currently lounging on the sofa in my Lidl thermal leggings, admiring my selection of Lidl houseplants in Lidl pots next to my Lidl salt lamp, but slightly pissed off that DS2 hasn't cleared up the mess he made crafting with Lidl coloured paper earlier 😆

So is it a set of say a handful of countries and they just repeat those in a cycle over and over or a different one for every week of the year (bar Dec as someone mentioned earlier, I guess the space is given over to all Xmasy things)?

Just out of curiosity. Nice to explore new foods.

I'm glad it's not just me with the milk- the store is new but not so new it could be put down to teething issues. Even in the height of Covid shopping mania all the shops round me always had milk so it's not an area thing. You'd think milk is something they'd over order rather than risk under ordering...

Re the veg yeah it's definitely dirtier than when I buy from Tesco. And I think someone had bitten one of my carrots which was a tad random but other than that seems ok on initial exploration.

Yes, the weeks are repeated quite often. USA week they had cheesey popcorn 🤮. I like Italian week. The Polish week is good (great honey).

MerryMarigold · 10/03/2022 10:30

I'm not sure but I think certain countries come up more often like Italy vs. Poland.

BluerThanRobinsEggs · 10/03/2022 10:31

@StrictlyAFemaleFemale

Fish n chips, cheese, corned beef.

Not as good as a variety as pre Brexit.

What's English sauce? Worcestershire sauce?
spacehardware · 10/03/2022 10:34

I had absolutely no idea about the themed weeks and have shopped fairly regularly in Lidl for years 🤦🏼‍♀️

I find Lidl a bit hit snd miss tho overall - I can fairly reliably do our entire grocery shop in aldi. I can't in Lidl - there are fairly normal things they just don't seem to sell. Lidl us like Aldi was a decade ago

Tonsiltrouble · 10/03/2022 10:35

I love Lidl. Ours opened about 18 months ago and I hadn’t really been before as we have a Sainsburys and a Waitrose pretty close. Now I do about 70% of my shopping in Lidl, usually doing two small trips each week.

There are extras I get from other places, but the bulk comes from Lidl. You get used to what they carry and sticking within that, and certain things come on rotation. I love Italian week, and I’ve just had a message from the Lidl app announcing Greek week begins today. Which means I might pop down there shortly 😊

Sgtmajormummy · 10/03/2022 10:47

British Week in Italy, too.
I stocked up on cheddar, Irish beef burgers, lime marmalade and shortcake fingers.
There were more Irish themed things than pre Brexit, like draught Guinness in cans (love the widget to make the foam) with branded glasses, shamrock muffins and Guinness chutney.

chesirecat99 · 10/03/2022 11:02

@oldtableleg

"What are they selling?"

Baked beans, bacon, chips, scampi, lots of cheddars, "English snack box" (fish fingers mozzarella sticks potato wedges), stilton, "English sauce", cod, corned beef, gin, fake Bailey's, scotch, Guinness, tea Grin

(just got Danish based dh to check!)

I'm amused at the idea of selling bacon as a British delicacy in Denmark, that's like taking coal to Newcastle Grin
AlisonDonut · 10/03/2022 11:07

I'm currently sat next to a €2.49 Aloe Vera bought from Lidl this week. I've been waiting and waiting til they went in offer. First seen at €15 so a fantastic bargain.

I'm strictly a Waitrose/Sainsbury's (when I can't get to Waitrose) gal, but since moving to France discovered Lidl Bio/Organic veg is better than Waitrose ever was. It is such good quality. We go every week now and cross the road to the Intermerche for basics that Lidl doesn't have.

FayCarew · 10/03/2022 11:09

@chesirecat99, the bacon theyeatin denmark is not the same as the danish bacon sold here

BertieBotts · 11/03/2022 18:48

It's British week in German Aldi as well! Do you think they all sync up on purpose? Is there some kind of important British date this week (I feel I should know this :o )

ClariceQuiff · 11/03/2022 18:53

Loving reading about the 'British week' food in all these overseas Lidls. What is 'English sauce' - guessing HP type sauce?

ClariceQuiff · 11/03/2022 18:58

... or looking at the Danish picture, possibly the English sauce is Worcestershire sauce - the bottle is the right shape for it?

Sgtmajormummy · 11/03/2022 23:55

Next Thursday (17/3) is St. Patrick’s Day, so that explains the Irish products.

Anoooshka · 12/03/2022 01:24

I was in Lidl this morning in the USA. We don't get the same themed weeks as you do. Could do with a British week. Though we do get Cheddar, and the Lidl digestives are not a bad substitute for the real thing.

Actually, just looking at the Lidl flyer and they have a special St. Patrick's Day week with specials on Guiness, chicken wings (?), canned potatoes (??), Scottish cheddar, corned beef and some Greek broccoli and cheddar pie thingy. And some hummus-flavoured crisps. Bit of a random selection there.
