Semantle episode 3

Somehow we've almost filled 2 threads already so here is thread 3. I still need a distraction from the news, and Semantle certainly fits the bill.

To understand what I'm on about followthis link. It's a word game like Wordle in that you need to find the secret word of the day, but it works by semantics. So you input a word and it will tell you how close you are. You have infinite guesses.

For example, one of the secret words was 'costly' with expensive, cumbersome and burdensome being the three closest words.

If you want to see how we've been getting on up to now,thread one is here, thread two here.

Enjoy, just don't plan on getting anything else done at the same time!

Enjoyed today’s compared to yesterday!

I solved Semantle #42 in 67 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 4.71. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #13. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 66.01 (998/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

I’m getting pretty good at this!! Grin

God knows! 🤣
BestIsWest · 12/03/2022 08:38

I got it but I don’t understand. How is 975 closer than 973?

darmar · 12/03/2022 08:40

My husband hates this game and always moans when I ask for help. But today he suggested the word! I had nearly all the top 10.

imnottoofussed · 12/03/2022 08:43

I was thrown off track by my first and second guesses being 943 and 968 so spent way too long guessing the wrong type of things

I solved Semantle #42 in 60 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 48.25 (943/1000).My penultimate guess had a similarity of 61.08 (995/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

GiveMummyTheWhizzer · 12/03/2022 08:45

I solved Semantle #42 in 155 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of -1.83. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #72. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 61.08 (995/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

That was weird today!!!

Haudyourwheesht · 12/03/2022 08:52

@Spudlet I thought I was getting better then took 222 guesses yesterday. I like to think that's the beauty of this game.

However... I solved Semantle #42 in 38 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 26.66. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #12. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 38.99 (664/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

I am feeling increasingly thick today Grin everyone else solving it in minutes and me taking nearly two hundred guesses..
Same here. I’m at 997 (with 989 and 991 before that so can see them theme) and can’t get any further, I’ve used everything I can think of and find that’s linked to that word and everything else is cold.
ThatPosterIsSoRight · 12/03/2022 09:21

I solved Semantle #42 in 146 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 6.83. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #38. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 12.57. semantle.novalis.org/

Not my specialist subject. I was stuck on 980 and words relating to that.

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 12/03/2022 09:22

@Sexnotgender

How is 580 not the closest word😂
I have had this explained to me. It is the words most used with the target word in journalism. For example, the other day with the word that stumped us all! Generous. One of the green words was bolognese. In journalism it would be quite common for the sentence 'a generous portion of bolognese'

The word you have pointed out is very much similar to the target word, but wouldn't usually be used next to it.

Another example would be for example (rubbish one though) if the target word was vegetable. The word 'two' could be a green word as the phrase 'meat and two veg' is quite popularly put together.

Since that has been explained I have improved a lot.

LizDoingTheCanCan · 12/03/2022 09:27

I solved Semantle #42 in 28 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 2.80. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #22. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 61.08 (995/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

They've definitely toned down the difficulty!

Alwaystired99 · 12/03/2022 09:34

Under 40 guesses but stuck on 998 and 999 now. Feel like I've used every variant I can think of and the one I had a flash of must be right for only got the dreaded ??????

Tiddlesthecat · 12/03/2022 09:36

The answer is more obvious than you think. Think about subcategories and types rather than words associated with your highest word.

Snorklette · 12/03/2022 09:42

@idroppedthescrewinthetuna

That’s really helpful, thank you for the explanation 👍.

Out of interest, do people have a set pattern of words they start off with? Or just totally random?

Alwaystired99 · 12/03/2022 09:50

Thanks @Tiddlesthecat , I got there in 50 with a bit more broader thinking.

I solved Semantle #42 in 50 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 10.06. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #16. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 33.67 (146/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

I asked this the other day.
I was told to use very general words such as 'good' 'set'
My start words are always - good, person, hot, cold and wood.
