Somehow we've almost filled 2 threads already so here is thread 3. I still need a distraction from the news, and Semantle certainly fits the bill.

To understand what I'm on about followthis link. It's a word game like Wordle in that you need to find the secret word of the day, but it works by semantics. So you input a word and it will tell you how close you are. You have infinite guesses.

For example, one of the secret words was 'costly' with expensive, cumbersome and burdensome being the three closest words.

I solved Semantle #40 in 90 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 6.49. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #20. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 29.86 (852/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

And any kind of 987 I try (apart from 967) is downright cold - can anyone give a hint about whether it’s worth pursuing that line of enquiry?

Me too! I have same ones and I've tried every single version I can think of and cannot get any closer.

145 guesses in and 37 greens including 4 in the 900s.

Grrr this game is driving me nuts

Oh no, I got my first green after 15 guesses, but it's only 305, and now I envisage myself disappearing down a rabbit hole of semi-related words and never getting above 500! I have too much work to do to put much thought into this, so will finish writing a very dull paper for the board and maybe inspiration will strike while I do so!

Wow, take it back, my very next guess has taken me to 983!

I'm on 998 and think I'm on the wrong theme as going backwards now. Should I carry on with this route?

How is 998, 997, 996 etc closer to the final word than 991?
The patterns of meaning are driving me nuts.

Can't post the standard thingy as I did it on my phone and I'm on laptop for mn.

I got it in 149. My closest word was 991. It took me 47 guesses to get a green word !

well I think quite a few of the top 10 take you down a very specific route, the answer is less specific, more general.

I guessed two words which showed ???? And they helped me more than anything. Did we ever get to the bottom of what ???? means?

I’ve just checked the words and my ???? guesses were root word versions of 997 but not on the list as their own words, so maybe that’s why.

???? Seems to mean that it's got a connection but they don't think anyone will think of that word so it would knock other related words off the top 1000. Given the words in the list today I don't know how obscure a word would have to be to out-weird them!

I've never had the ???? 🤔

I wouldn't place too much weight on exact rankings. The target word might be used more in conjunction with other terms than its own synonyms, perhaps. I had 951 and 978 which are the wrong way round but you'd use the latter with the target more than the former.

They're relationships deduced by an AI from imperfect sources, not lexigraphical relationships compiled by humans.

I got 983 on my 7th guess, and have been going round in circles since then. 987 is my top guess so far and am thoroughly stuck

Oh my god sorry I didn't mean 995 I meant 985. I'm still stuck on 998 I've tried general terms but just stumped!

I think those higher ones are only most related to the word if you’re thinking of one or two quite specific contexts. But that does make sense because of where the data/ results are coming from as in the news. A news report probably wouldn’t use 991 in relation to the actual target word, because something different would be going on in that context.

It’s like I always try synonyms but it’s often not quite a direct synonym we’re actually looking for - more like a similar word that would also frequently occur within the same context and bit of text as the target word. Or something.

That makes sense it my head but my brain is fried from playing this bloody game so it’s probably a load of nonsense

What helped me was thinking of the type of place 983 and 987 might be, and what they might be doing there! The target word is also sort of the 983 of a particular place where other 985s might be - if you have that one

@Wallawallakoala I'm stuck on 998 too. I gave up yesterday in the 990s and will again today at this rate. I don't think I actually like this game very much but it's weirdly addictive.

Finally got it thanks to AliasGrape’s hint! That took me so long and I was starting to get quite frustrated!
