If you don't have any high cupboards in your kitchen...

How do you store your plates, mugs and glasses? To me they go in the head height units. We're getting our kitchen done and I want to get rid of all the high units but I can't imagine them in the lower units, don't know why

I do have wall cabinets and if I could find a way to make additional storage in the kitchen foot print I would get rid of them. I have mugs in a wall cabinet but all plates and bowls are stored in a drawer which I really like, no stretching to reach things at the back.

I do have high cupboards in my kitchen, but the plates and glasses are in the low cupboards. Mugs are in a head height one though for some reason.

Even when living at home as a child, plates/bowls/dishes were always in a low cupboard.

longtompot · 07/03/2022 21:43

My plates and bowls are in a low down cupboard and my mugs and glasses are on eye height shelves and in the top cupboards. When we do our kitchen it will still be like that, but we will have drawers in the bottom cupboards as I am fed up of trying to get things from the back of the cupboard.

A drawer would work, big plates one side and bowls and side plates the other? Maybe I need to factor in more drawers rather than cupboards

I don't have any high / wall cupboards. Crockery / mugs etching all stored in wide pan drawers. Can't imagine going back to wall units, I think they tend to look a bit dated.

Mamette · 07/03/2022 21:48

I don’t have any upper cupboards. My crockery and glasses go in wide deep drawers. You can get pegboard things that plates and bowls go into (but they would still be fine without). Then for glasses and cups I have a rubbery drawer liner from ikea.

Henlie · 07/03/2022 21:51

Plates and bowls are in pull our drawers under the island.
Mugs/glasses (are at eye height) in our pantry.
No over head/high cupboards here.

BooksAndHooks · 07/03/2022 22:03

Plates, bowls, mugs, saucepans are in the low cupboards. The wall units have tea, sugar etc, glasses, sauces, spices etc.

I’ve never wanted heavy plates in the wall cupboards.

HairyScaryMonster · 07/03/2022 22:04

We've only got a few high cupboards, and I wish I had at least 2 more drawers. We've got one for plates and bowls and one for tuppaware and tea towels etc, but one for snacks and one for pyrex and baking stuff would be amazing. I love having drawers of plates, 90% of the dishwasher unloads directly next to it.

Eveything is in drawers

youngestisapsycho · 07/03/2022 22:16

Our plates and bowls are in a corner cupboard with pullout shelves

RowanAlong · 07/03/2022 22:16

On a dresser

Hadalifeonce · 07/03/2022 22:19

All crockery is in base cabinets, pans in large drawers. Just a couple of small wall cupboards an be ovens. I much prefer having no wall units as it opens up the kitchen.

Most of my under counter storage is wide deep drawers and I really like them. I hate scrabbling around reaching over items to get to something at the back, with the drawers I just pull everything towards me. Makes putting everything away, when I empty the dishwasher, quicker too.

Readyforspring · 07/03/2022 22:24

My higher cupboards aren't deep enough for my plates. Plates cups glasses in low cupboards. Saucepans in drawers.
Pyrex type in low corner unit.
Top units bread crisps etc in one.
Tins tea sugar etc in one
Spices ans randoms in one
Medicines in one.

BonnyandPoppy · 07/03/2022 22:26

We have our plates and bowls in large drawers. We do have a few high cupboards but not many and only along one wall with the extractor fan in one above the hob.

NannyGythaOgg · 07/03/2022 22:26

I have a single wall cupboard where I store mugs, plates and glasses but I have a small kitchen without enough lower space. I would have no problem storing low down so long as it was all drawers and not cupboards. I have a combination of pull out units, ordinary drawers (some deep) and a wonderful set of wire drawers behind a cupboard door. All work really well. The cupboards I used to have really didn't work.

OverByYer · 07/03/2022 22:27

I don’t have any wall cupboards. My plates and bowls are in a pull out corner unit. Mugs in a cupboard under the counter by the kettle next to the dishwasher as are the plates. Makes unloading easy.
I have a huge window so for me no wall units really opens up the kitchen and makes it light and airy

Halfarsedjingler · 07/03/2022 22:27

Drawers. I only have one cupboard in my whole kitchen the rest is all drawers.

catwomando · 07/03/2022 22:29

Drawers are much better than cupboards because you can get to everything and you don't lose stuff at the back.

Our plates and bowls are in a drawer under the hob. Perfect for serving up. The glasses and mugs are in a cupboard at shoulder height, next to the kettle. Even our cupboards have pull out drawers in them! It makes so much better use of the space.

brokengoalposts · 07/03/2022 22:38

No high cupboards in my kitchen. My plates are in a big drawer, with one of these peg boards in.

Rainbowshit · 07/03/2022 22:41

We have all our plates and bowls in deep drawers with peg boards which I love. We don't have any wall cupboards which looks nice but I have to say annoys me that the glasses and mugs are in low level cupboards.

Hebeee · 08/03/2022 03:54

We only have one (double) cupboard beneath the sink, the rest is drawers or open shelves at the bottom. On the wall we have one double cabinet where we keep glasses, mugs etc and a tall open shelf for display. We also have a plate rack over the sink.

Our plates, bowls etc are kept in the plate rack and in open shelving beneath the island (which does admittedly get dusty 🙄). All tupperware type boxes, mixing bowls, cake tins etc and small appliances are in deep drawers whilst saucepans, colanders etc hang from the ceiling on a pan rack.

Nat6999 · 08/03/2022 04:22

I've only got 1 double wall unit & a single one, if I could have my ideal kitchen I would have all deep pan type drawers on the bottom & any cupboards on the walls would have those pull down racks in them. I'm disabled & use a wheelchair sometimes in the house.

Simonjt · 08/03/2022 05:47

We don’t have any wallcupboards, virtually all of our under counter area is drawers, I think we have just one actual cupboard.
