What do larger ladies wear in a swimming pool?

Obviously I'm not going to cover everything up but as someone who does cover everything all the time I don't want to feel to exposed in the swimming pool.

I'm finally plucking up the courage to learn to swim after over 40 years of being terrified of water, I don't want what I'm wearing to put me off.

I'm a size 20-22 and wondered what larger ladies wear in the pool?

I love swimming, I wear a shorty swimming suit from sports direct, will find a link. But from my observations, people of all sizes wear all sorts of swimming costumes.

RampantIvy · 06/03/2022 21:58

Just a normal swimsuit.

I. A size 24. I wear black leggings and a normal swimsuit.

Mull · 06/03/2022 21:59

I’ve recently bought some swimming shorts (like cycling shorts) to go under my swimming costume. Has made me feel more comfortable around a pool although I know no one really looks / cares!

LawnFever · 06/03/2022 22:00

Just a normal swimming costume Smile Good luck with your lessons!

DoobryWhatsit · 06/03/2022 22:03

I'm not especially big (size 16. Ish 😉) but i always wear a rash vest and swim shorts these days. It's not really because I'm ashamed of the squidge, it's more because I would never wander around in public in my underwear, no matter how thin I was!

Wallawallakoala · 06/03/2022 22:05

I wear a "shaping" (suck you in) tankini, I'll try and find the link but it's ruched and has shorts so it does make me feel somewhat more comfortable than a normal swimsuit

Peridot1 · 06/03/2022 22:06

I’m a 20/22. I just wear a normal swimming costume.

I’m big. It is what it is. Who gives a shit. Everyone is too focused on themselves to look at me!

Fridafever · 06/03/2022 22:06

I’m not very big but I’m self conscious and I wear a long sleeved costume with shorts over. It revolutionised swimming for me, I hated wandering about feeling exposed.

Theunamedcat · 06/03/2022 22:09

Honestly they wear anything they dam well want

But you need to wear what is comfortable for you

What do you want to wear shorts/tankini type or high cut style?

Drbrowns · 06/03/2022 22:10

I’m the same size as you and I just normal togs.

gogohm · 06/03/2022 22:12

A normal swimsuit, bravissimo is a good source for suits by bra size if you are more substantial in that department. Alternatively you could get a skirted suit or swim shirts and tankini top

deepbreath · 06/03/2022 22:14

I'm an 18. I wear the Slazenger boyleg in the link by poodlepoop. I support people with disabilities in the pool, so I need to be comfortable. I pop a rash vest or old t-shirt over it sometimes, either for extra coverage or to stop my arms accidentally getting pinched.

Perfectlystill · 06/03/2022 22:16

Loads of larger women swim in the pool I go to and they all have dark one piece swimming costumes. Like I do except I'm a size 12.

IE same as anyone else.

I love that we are all there getting on with our thing with no fuss.

HeartshapedFox · 06/03/2022 22:16

Once you start swimming you’ll see all shapes, sizes and ages in the pool!
And honestly, everyone is too busy worrying about themselves to worry about you (though obviously wear what you makes you feel comfortable).
I signed up for some adult swimming lessons last year and it was really daunting. I was so nervous before the first class. But when I got there everyone in the group was so welcoming and supportive - again - all ages and sizes. The hardest part is getting through the door, so please go for it!

BaffledMum22 · 06/03/2022 22:17

Im the same size as you @50gold and I wear a normal swimming costume or tankini. I actually feel more self conscious wearing something different to “the norm” as I find it draws more attention to me 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have some really great swimwear from Panache that fits nicely 😊

Good for you for doing something out of your comfort zone ❤️

audweb · 06/03/2022 22:18

Size 20 here, always just wear a normal swimming costume. I feel comfortable in that case no one can you once you are in the water anyway. Just wear whatever you feel comfortable in.

Perfectlystill · 06/03/2022 22:18

100pc this. I am too busy trying to swim my target distance to give a shit what anyone else looks like and so is everyone else.

OP please don't worry about what you look like - I've noticed that pool swimmers are just there to do their thing and go home. No one is checking anyone else out.

justasoul · 06/03/2022 22:24

As a fairly seasoned plus size swimmer, the one thing I recommend is a swimmers back style - not sure what they’re actually called, but the X or Y shaped backs - as they keep the suit nicely in place while you’re swimming, so you can focus on the actual swimming Grin. Apart from that, whatever makes you feel comfortable, OP.

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 06/03/2022 22:25

I wear a Normal swimming costume but put on shorts....

GinniMcGinface · 06/03/2022 22:29

I like the figleaves brand which is now part of simply be. Their swimwear range - tummy control and cup size options are great.
If you're not worried about the fit, it gives your confidence a wee boost.

Enjoy your swims!

LouLou789 · 06/03/2022 22:32

A one piece black swimming cozzie that has a built in skirt (hides belly and non-treated pubes)

Redburnett · 06/03/2022 22:35

A normal swimsuit is fine. The fat/flab does not show as it is under the water (speaking for myself of course). Getting rid of the wobbly bits is a slow process but no one else cares..
