What do larger ladies wear in a swimming pool?

Obviously I'm not going to cover everything up but as someone who does cover everything all the time I don't want to feel to exposed in the swimming pool.

I'm finally plucking up the courage to learn to swim after over 40 years of being terrified of water, I don't want what I'm wearing to put me off.

I'm a size 20-22 and wondered what larger ladies wear in the pool?

I wear a "normal" costume but I don't want:

  • Thin straps
  • Plunging neckline
  • High cut legs
Look out for these, so many costumes have them
Gotajobthrunepotism · 06/03/2022 22:38

Size 18 here. I wear a normal swimming costume or a tankini. Sometimes with boy leg shorts.

I also sometimes wear swimming leggings. Nothing to do with my size; just when I can’t be arsed doing my bikini line

CafeCremeMerci · 06/03/2022 22:39

I wear a costume with mens surf shorts. I need the shorts because as I've got older my tummy has 'dropped' and with only a costume (no matter the cut) I get gaping around the leg hole.

I like the mens board shorts (rather than ladies one piece with legs) as they're not fitted and I look like bloody Winnie the Pooh in the shorts style one piece.

But honestly. Whatever you feel most comfortable in, is fine, as long as there aren't any pool regulations forbidding it. (Some don't allow cotton T-shirts for example)

Hope you get sorted & enjoy yourself!!

When I was a size 20 I just wore a swimming costume.

WingingItSince1973 · 06/03/2022 22:43

I have that costume from Sports Direct. It's OK but not that flattering for me a size 14/16 with a bloated belly 🤣 At our pool I've yet to see a smaller size. One lady I know came and she was a larger lady and she rocked a bikini! She looked amazing. I wish I had that courage. It wasn't an itsy bitsy one but it really looked good on her x

@Peridot1

I’m a 20/22. I just wear a normal swimming costume.

I’m big. It is what it is. Who gives a shit. Everyone is too focused on themselves to look at me!

This! My experience and attitude too
MonkeyPuddle · 06/03/2022 22:52

I have a black swimming costume and a bikini. I’m a size 22 and frankly don’t give a rats ass about what other people think of my body.
My body is fat and That’s obvious if I wear shorts, leggings or a lovely colourful cossie. It matters not one bit.
Wear what makes you comfortable, my bikini is similar to the one in the picture.

I have this too plus I am tall so costumes never fit well. Where do you get your shorts?
ForgedInFire · 06/03/2022 23:20

I tend to wear a swimming dress but I feel it looks a bit matronly (I am 30 and a size 24). I have ordered some new swimming costumes from Shein which cover the shoulders which is the area I am most self concious about. I am also considering a high waisted 2 piece but havent felt confident enough to order one yet

whatever1980 · 06/03/2022 23:25

I've just bought Nike swim shorts with a matching tankini top. Got the shorts from next and tankini top from clickswim.

The shorts aren't tight around legs they look like running shorts so not baggy and not tight. I just wanted a bit more coverage on my bottom half

KupoNutCoffee · 06/03/2022 23:26

I wear a tankini. Im about 18 - 20, Mostly because although I'm short I seem to have a long torso, so even a 22 seems stretched and feels low on my chest or high on my legs (with that awful gaping). But then I'm cheap...oh and plus I hate fighting a one piece off.

It tends to be a tankini top, with high waisted bottoms so even if the top rides up a bit I still feel covered. But it's not that anyone cares.

I find the swim dress/skirt things feel almost like they're drawing attention to the area you want to hide, and if nothing else make my legs look even more chunky and short.

I spend most of my time in up to my shoulders/neck and just want to sort my hair out when I get out...so have stopped worrying what I look like for the short scurry from the cubicle to pool.

Wear what's comfy for you, nothing you have to pull just so, otherwise it'll be all you think about. Two pieces mean you can mix and match so you don't have to forgo a skirt for high neck, or can have a high-waisted bottom, and long top.

Girlmumdogmumboymum · 06/03/2022 23:31

I've always worn a swim dress. Yours always has some pretty ones in.

TricksAnd · 06/03/2022 23:32

Try looking at landsend swimsuits. I swim everyday and I buy all my suits there. I'm not overweight but I know they do all sorts of suits for all types of figures. Their suits are amazing quality. You can usually find a good few in their never ending sales. I usually pay £20. The last well and wash well.
I think tankinis can look great on bigger sizes.

I also think swim shorts can look neat and tidy.
The main thing though is to be comfortable. A little bit of body shaping might be ok but you don't won't to be uncomfortable.
Good luck. I hope you find a suit you like.

Xmasbaby11 · 06/03/2022 23:33

I'm a 22 and just wear a normal swimsuit in a simple practical style, eg 2 block colours or pattern, thick shoulder straps, tummy control. Yes I still look fat. I'm a size 22, I am fat, and no swimsuit can hide this. I wouldn't feel myself in skirted one or shorts but you just have to find whatever makes you feel at ease.

I have never felt uncomfortable in the pool - noone can see you once in, and really, noone is looking.

hilariousnamehere · 06/03/2022 23:34

High waisted bikini and a massive mermaid tail, but I'm probably not your average swimmer 😂 when I'm not in my tail I have a lovely skirted costume from Sainsbury's, I'm 18-20. Honestly no one gives me a second glance unless I'm in the mermaid tail Grin

fallfallfall · 06/03/2022 23:50

once in the water you will be fine, go for purpose and comfort.
get a lovely cover-up for enroute to and from the water.

Stompythedinosaur · 07/03/2022 00:35

I wear a swimming costume.

Honestly I'm massive, and no one has ever given me a second glance.

Anystarinthesky · 07/03/2022 01:26

There are some nice costumes on here.

www.curvissa.co.uk/swimwear/_/N-1s

I have a skirt swimsuit, the boyleg swimsuit and ordinary costumes, I started of with the skirt version but now wear the ordinary costumes.

Spottybotty20 · 07/03/2022 01:52

Landsend underwired tankini with shorts bottoms.

All swimsuits look cleavage-ey on me and I didn’t want that to take my toddler to baby swim class. The shorties are ideal because they give good coverage (so don’t need to panic shave bikini line) but don’t look weird.

constantindigestion · 07/03/2022 02:05

Tankini

LadyPropane · 07/03/2022 02:09

I'd just wear a plain old one piece in the correct size. I'm in Australia and everybody swims here, it's part of daily life and socialisation, so you see women of every shape and size in ordinary swim suits. Usually a simple one piece or bikini.

If you particularly want extra coverage then you can buy little swim shorts that go over your costume. Those coupled with one of those long sleeved costumes would cover you up just as much as ordinary clothes would.
