Evening wedding reception food - Dominos!?

I’m having an evening only wedding reception in a few months and we are really struggling with the catering side of things. We will be having a ceremony around 3/4pm for 1 hour, then onto photos at the church grounds, and people will go straight to the venue from there. We aren’t doing a sit down meal as we want a more relaxed vibe.

We are seriously thinking about ordering a large quantity of dominos pizzas to the venue and having a pizza buffet. We LOVE pizza as a couple and feel like it’s a bit different to the standard wedding hot buffet. (the venue doesn’t really have outside access so a pizza truck wouldn’t work, hence a takeaway option).

We were thinking of having sides at the start of the buffet table (pasta, salad, coleslaw, crisps, cocktail sausages & breadsticks) & then the rest would be pizza.

What is your thoughts on this? Would you be mortified if you turned up to a wedding reception and had pizza? Or would you prefer a standard finger buffet?

Also how many people would you say could share a large dominos pizza? This will help up with quantities etc.

@Skinnytailedsquirrel

Pizza gets cold so quickly. I don't think it would work. Have sandwiches and salads instead.
Sandwiches and salads??? It's a wedding not a small kid's party!
LovelyRita1 · 06/03/2022 18:02

Didn't think of this! Fab idea. Could potentially have sides/ extras laid out on a table that people can help themselves to throughout the evening, thank you!!

Definitely a better option than Domino's op. You'll relax more not having to coordinate people getting their pizza and I definitely would prefer eating it if it was made on site etc. Glad you've found a solution!

OP, served at table or not, it’s still an awful idea.

There'll be boxes everywhere, dripping pizza over outfits and people opening boxes to see what is what. Chaos.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 06/03/2022 18:06

If it was 15 people, it might work but not for that number. And more people don't like pizza than you might think.

RandomDent · 06/03/2022 18:07

I can’t eat pizza. Can you order me some wings if I’m invited?

Neenawneenaw76 · 06/03/2022 18:09

Honestly I love pizza so this would be my dream wedding but much rather have Pizza hut or Papa John's if going for a high street chain, Domino's are a bit 😝 xx

I'm Jewish - along with approximately 99% of all Jews and also people of Asian heritage, I can't digest lactose. In fact only about 35% of the world's adult population can digest lactose.

Approximately 65 percent of the human population has a reduced ability to digest lactose after infancy. Lactose intolerance in
adulthood is most prevalent in people of East Asian descent, with 70 to 100 percent of people affected in these communities. Lactose intolerance is also very common in people of West African, Arab, Jewish, Greek, and Italian descent.

medlineplus.gov/genetics/condition/lactose-intolerance/#frequency

However, if you're going to have a wedding of well over 100 people made up entirely of white people of Northern European descent, you'll probably be OK in terms of that aspect - only about 5% of Northern Europeans are lactose intolerant.

Add to that the high proportion of people who don't like or can't digest gluten/wheat, the people who can't have tomato/nightshades and the people who just don't like pizza, and I guess, depending on demographics, you might find that about half of your guests are OK with it.

Not sure why you would do this really.

TarcasticSwat · 06/03/2022 18:16

On the pizza van idea - I went to a festival last year and the pizza van really struggled to keep up with orders. For sourdough pizzas it took about 10-15mins to cook each pizza in total and they could only put about 2-4 in the oven at a time. They ended up with an hour long waiting time for festival-goers due to the turnaround. As you have a lot of guests there will be a long wait from when your first guests get their pizzas to your last guests get theirs.

Wavypurple · 06/03/2022 18:19

Ignore the snooty comments 😂😂 I would love this as a guest.
Also it’s your wedding, I’m sure you’ve sat through lots of shit ones. Do whatever the two of you want ✌️

Alwayswonderedwhy · 06/03/2022 18:19

I love pizza but wouldn't be impressed at Domino's. I order from an independent.

TracyMosby · 06/03/2022 18:21

Don’t worry about the “smartness” - casual do sounds fab
Thats only if it is actually a casual do though. If op and her dp have told
People it is a casual wedding and expect them to dress accordingly, fine. If people go suited and booted and the only thing casual is the food… not fine.

Lottle · 06/03/2022 18:22

Do it! I'd be thrilled. Dominoes do gf and dairy free too.

FirmButFairMum · 06/03/2022 18:22

See if there’s a company that can come with pizza ovens and cook on site

mrsmoppp · 06/03/2022 18:23

Is there deffo no car park or anywhere for maybe a fish and chip van to come?

One couple I know had bacon cobs, as their main after food items,
Hawkins001 · 06/03/2022 18:24

And pizza for me , would be excellent

Dashel · 06/03/2022 18:27

Could you hire a food truck?

Gonnagetgoing · 06/03/2022 18:33

Personally I can’t think of anything worse but if that’s what you’d like.

I’d prefer a mixture of eg pizza 🍕, burgers 🍔 etc rather the just one option.

Landedonfeet · 06/03/2022 18:33

Honestly
As someone who really doesn’t enjoy food like pizza
Especially not when glammed up
This really really wouldn’t appeal to me on any level

But I’m in the minority!

JeremyBeadlesTinyHand · 06/03/2022 18:33

We have friends who do wood fired pizza for weddings. I love casual food for a wedding. The sit down meals are never great. We had a hog roast at our wedding. Worked out far cheaper than the other options and it tasted amazing.

Titsflyingsouth · 06/03/2022 18:35

Nice idea in theory but would be a nightmare for anyone who can't have gluten/wheat or diary.

Some friends of ours hired a fish and chip van for their evening do. That went down a storm....

@Wavypurple - it’s not snooty! Just some people would prefer loads of stodge. Not had Dominoes in years but that’s because there are much better independent pizza places where I live.
itbemay1 · 06/03/2022 18:36
@Snoopsnoggysnog you are incorrect.
I attended a wedding last year which had a pizza van with a wood fired oven and 3 choices. So they had a guy prepping them all in the background constantly.
Each one took a few minutes tops. It was great, obviously everyone didn't pile up to the van at the same time but was a nice relaxed way of eating.
Beautiful quality and much better than dominos IMO.
Agree I went to a wedding and this is exactly how it was! It was perfect and the pizzas were delicious

Landedonfeet · 06/03/2022 18:36

Evening only
Fairly safe to presume people will be pulling out their glad rags
