Russia's foreign ministry has released a statement taking direct aim at the British government for its support of Ukraine.

I saw that and I don't really understand why they are singling out the UK over anyone else. Is it because of all the money they funnel into British political parties?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 05/03/2022 16:44

Oh ok, that makes sense. eyes up the granite worktops in the kitchen

I just thought it might be the common myth.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 05/03/2022 16:48

@satsumaeater they are higher on Dartmoor and other parts. The solution is to just leave the windows open and that helps a lot.

BREAKING: Israeli Prime Minister Bennett travelled secretly to Moscow. Meeting Putin now

Am not up to date on this thread so apologies if already discussed - should we be buying iodine? And what level of iodine should we have eg is a normal supplement worth having in the cupboard. I'm not panicking but am by nature a prepper, organising is how I cope with crisies!
Here in Sweden it was in the papers today that iodine tablets are completely pointless for anyone over 40 and should only be taken by anyone under 40 on direction from the authorities. DH (nuclear scientist) confirmed this.
MagicFox · 05/03/2022 16:49

@RedToothBrush what might that mean?

RedToothBrush · 05/03/2022 16:51

Anna Ahronheim @AAhronheim
That means Bennett, who is religious and keeps Shabbat, broke Shabbat for this meeting. But, Pikuach Nefesh trumps Shabbat

(Pikuach nefesh is the principle in Jewish law that the preservation of human life overrides virtually any other religious rule. Suggests mediator role is purpose of the trip).

AgnesWestern · 05/03/2022 16:51

Why have they aimed threats at us twice now?!

They said Liz Truss was their reason for putting nukes on high alert and now this? I don’t understand it.
All other countries are acting the same so why call us out specifically?

Possibly because they're not getting the support from the UK government they think they've paid them for.

#BREAKING Israeli PM Bennett meets with Putin in Moscow over Ukraine hours after Russia threatens to use Iran nuclear deal talks to leverage U.S. over Ukraine sanctions

timetochangeusername · 05/03/2022 16:52

I just looked at iodine pills and then decided I'd rather spend the money on a takeaway . Live while you can and all that .

US urges US citizens living or traveling in Russia to 'depart immediately'
The US government has warned American citizens living or traveling in Russia to “depart immediately”.

In new guidelines, published today, the US state department also warned that “some crediot and debit cards may be declined” when purchasing flights due to sanctions, that cash is in short supply and that foreigners may face “potential harassment”, reports BuzzFeed News correspondent Christopher Miller.

Not a good place to be

@Yeahthat

“This is where I also wonder if making pariahs of Russians themselves rather than only Putin's regime - throwing competitors out of sporting events, cancelling performers etc - might actually be counterproductive in the long term.

Putin will eventually fall, and when he does, we must have a policy of rapprochement and normalisation of relations with Russia.“

^^agree with this. I’ve been wondering what the de-escalation post-war (and hopefully post-Putin) might look like. Not demonising the Russian people is so important, not just morally ie they are not pro-Putin and many equally heartbroken, but in terms of future relations and stability.

I also agree with you on the need not to lose sight of each party’s agenda in terms of what they are saying. I’m so glad this thread has not fallen prey to good/bad dichotomy.

@Neome thank you for the Osipova link, I will enjoy that read tonight

@cakeorwine about entire towns being pummelled in wartime, I have family history links to this and agree it’s not as widely known as it should be, sadly.

@Kizty

I agree that it feels like history repeating itself. If we really can’t intervene through fear of starting nuclear war then that leaves a pretty precarious situation for the future. It just feels so wrong to leave the population of Ukraine to their fate
Agreed.
skodadoda · 05/03/2022 16:58

Not surprised the promised ceasefire hasn’t happened. Here is the reason the world should never again believe any ‘promises’ Russia makes.

On Meduza calling for Russian speakers to get news into Russia - sorry can’t find original post to tag PP - what about the 15 years in prison for “propaganda”? I am just wondering how many Russians would fear that law, if they are over here/in the West? Does anyone have a sense? Presumably if they still have ties they’d want to eventually visit family and might be fearful of repercussions (like the poor US girl who’s just reportedly been arrested on entry)? Though I hope Russians in the West are not fearful and that the overall mood is let’s tear down Putin and his vile regime. Good on Meduza.

One of the World at War episodes is about the towns where whole populations were massacred. It's the last one titled 'Remember'

Hi OP I'm glad the thread has been reinstated, had tried to post a few questions earlier but couldn't. Firstly thank you for starting this thread, it's fascinating. My questions are

  1. I know you don't have a crystal ball, but do you think there's a chance ukraine could win the war?
  2. why do you think the Russians broke the ceasefire today? Surely even they wouldn't be that cruel to promise to allow civilians to leave then start attacking?
theDudesmummy · 05/03/2022 17:00

Re the iodine pills, my DD is in Poland and the government has specifically told them not to buy/stockpile iodine pills as they will run out, and if they were needed they will be distrubuted by the government.

SpaceyCake · 05/03/2022 17:01

The Finn in me really wants to get iodine tablets because we always had them in the cupboard when I was growing up. I wouldn't get them for the war, but I would be more concerned about a nuclear accident and how to protect my young child from radiation. I looked into it and they seem to be sold out pretty much globally at the moment, but if anyone is thinking of trying to get some, I think it's potassium iodine you want? Normal iodine supplements wouldn't be the same.

Anyway, I think it's unlikely that those are needed but I can completely understand how getting some in might make some people feel better.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 05/03/2022 17:01

@AgnesWestern it does feel like that. Especially given that Senator Lynsey Graham's comments went even further. I don't know but my understanding is that we have been tougher than others on sanctions and those sanctions are hitting where it hurts.

Ooooh could this be the thing that was making a funny pattern above Ukraine on FlightRadar, a few threads ago now?

Any further observations from FlightRadar heads more generally? Always so interesting!

ItsOnlyWordsInnit · 05/03/2022 17:02

DD2 was at Berlin's main station this afternoon, waiting for a regional train to get home. Her train was delayed because a full train was coming in from Warsaw first. She said that the platform was obviously really full, but there seemed to be loads of capable volunteers to help people off the trains, many of them spoke Ukrainian, and it all seemed pretty calm and well organised. I think a big tent has been set up outside the station as an initial point for people to get registered and given accommodation, determining medical needs etc. DD said that just about everyone getting off the train, unsurprisingly, were women and young kids, and that the kids looked horribly confused and stunned.
I feel so bad that that we don't have a spare room to offer, have donated money to Red Cross and Save the Children instead. I also got a few little bits and pieces, toothpaste etc, which are on the list of needed things that can actually be used for local distribution to recently arrived people, no transport involved.
Having said that, a lot of aid lorries, including official medicine deliveries, are going from here to eastern Poland and Ukraine because we're only about 8 hours from the Ukrainian border, and 9-10 hours to Lviv.

yoolia · 05/03/2022 17:02

They've already done it in Syria.
