Aiming at a nuclear power plant and hitting is worrying

Very worrying
Marmelace · 04/03/2022 11:27

Wonder if it's a warning or they are actually going for it? Surely not.

ThoseFestiveLights · 04/03/2022 11:32

I might have be thick but why would they do this? They have to suffer over Chernobyl alongside everyone else. This seems insane. Although I was wondering if the soldiers are all too young to remember Chernobyl.

Ylvamoon · 04/03/2022 11:32

I think it's a warning to the West/ NATO / EU that he mean business.

On the bright side, I doubt Putin will poison the Ukraine on purpose. It's economically to valuable to make it into a dead zone.

There is a quote somewhere where Putin says something along the lines of 'I have a something to lose but you have everything to lose.'

It is terrifying.

Suppose they won't stop at the one attempt if it was deliberate

stripeyflowers · 04/03/2022 11:59

Pandemic seems so long ago.

OP posts:
Fuckitydoodah · 04/03/2022 12:03

It's frightening.

What will it take to stop the evil bastard?! I just hope someone in his inner circle is plotting his assassination. Putin needs to be obliterated.

Twizbe · 04/03/2022 12:06

It's scary. Putin knows he is coming out of this in a box. He really does have nothing to lose at this point.

The similarities between him and Hitler are becoming more and more apparent. Putin doesn't care if he obliterates the world, destroys his own population or anything else.

TellMeMoreHellebore · 04/03/2022 12:15

Ukraines foreign minister says an explosion at that plant could be 10 X worse than that of Chernobyl

I remember Chernobyl well. I was in sixth form and we were terrified. The genuine fear of it wafting over the U.K. and the absolute obsession with the wind and rain

Papyrus · 04/03/2022 12:17

There were reports earlier in the week that communication between Russian troops and generals was poor. So it may not have been an deliberate attempt to cause catastrophe. Ukraine relies heavily on nuclear power for electricity, so I can see why they would want to take it. The soldiers on the ground may just not have been aware of the potential consequences.

Alternatively, I could see a strategy being to compromise the plant and then blame the Ukrainian troops. I'm not sure if either of those scenarios are any better than Putin losing his mind, really Confused.

I had thought along similar lines. They're note as well-orchestrated and well-oiled as we might expect.

The Russian troops have been given 'supplies! That are 7 years out of date.... seems like they are weak and unorganised

Smidgy · 04/03/2022 12:27

I think taking the plant is more of a tactical thing rather than an actual threat, although obviously Putin is happy for us all to be worrying about nuclear threats as it helps keep us in check. Realistically, there is nothing to be gained from "blowing it up" as it will not only contaminate the area he wants to take control of, but also of Russia and beyond.

BlanketsBanned · 04/03/2022 12:32

This is the end for Putin, the whole world will condemn him, surely there is only one way out for him now.

Marmelace · 04/03/2022 12:46

Just a thought, and I probably know nowt, but if Putin has got this nuclear plant in his sight, would other countries get involved to stop vast devastation, how far would the repercussions travel?

LightingCandles · 04/03/2022 12:49

Ffs. That is NOT good.

TellMeMoreHellebore · 04/03/2022 12:50

I don't think there has ever been a deliberate attack on a nuclear power plant before!

I may well be wrong though

Jisforjelly · 04/03/2022 12:50

My guess is they’re taking the nuclear power plant to control the energy in Ukraine and surrounding area. Not because they want to blow it up.

Motherdare · 04/03/2022 12:52

There is a good article on Telegraph website explaining how worried you need to be about this development. Answer: not too worried.

Sadly that's not true. India, China etc are not condemning him because they're putting their own financial interests before the welfare of ordinary people. It's not dissimilar to the Tories allowing Russian oligarchs to use London to launder their dirty money, and now only imposing minimal sanctions (that still have not been fully put into it place).

Some people will always value money over people, and our government do not have clean hands in that respect.

China is not supporting him either though - their silence says a lot.

That’s what I read. They want to control the power supply.
BlanketsBanned · 04/03/2022 18:27

Is any country publicly supporting him
