Unbelievable. Thread 6 is almost full, to be found here : www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4495271-The-Invasion-is-ongoing-Part-6?pg=1

Still a fascinating and thoughtful set of documentation of our evolving thoughts, fears, questions, analyses and updates. And still a credit to the eyes, ears and knowledge of those on here.

Pinched from one poster on thread 6 whose name I can't recall:

Latest claims from both sides about casualties
Ukraine's army regularly puts out updates on the damage it says it's inflicting on Russian forces, which continue to press on key cities, particularly in the south.

We should stress that the BBC can't verify this information, but the latest update from the General Staff of the Armed Forces says that approximately 9,000 Russian personnel have been killed or wounded.

It also says Ukrainian forces have destroyed:

217 tanks
90 artillery systems
31 helicopters
30 planes or other aircraft
For its part, Russia yesterday for the first time gave a specific number for casualties it had suffered in Ukraine, saying 498 Russian soldiers had died and nearly 1,600 had been wounded.

It said it had killed 2,870 Ukrainian soldiers and "nationalists".

[quote FatFucker]Sad stories from adult children based in Ukraine trying to prove to their Russian based parents the truth. But the parents are not believing them.

How can you believe your government over your kids?

Happens a lot. Recent obvious example is America. So many anecdotes of Fox News inhaling parents who thought Trump a great and powerful leader v their adult kids who...thought otherwise.

Anyone checking flightradar?

jgw1 · 04/03/2022 10:40

@DuncinToffee

Hope this will reassure people

Overnight a projectile hit a building within the plant site. The building is not part of the reactors. This caused a localised fire that was extinguished by the local fire brigade. All the safety systems at the plant were not affected. [There was] no release of radioactive material"
Rafael Grossi
IAEA

Reassuring in the sense that there was not a nuclear disaster overnight, but is it actually reassuring that someone has set fire to a building within the nuclear complex? Should we be concerned that they are sufficiently careless that it is only luck that this was not far worse?

"Group think" is a thing, especially if your life depends upon it and you don't have anything to counter the narrative. Off the top of my head, here in the UK we have:

  • MMR anti-vaxxers
  • Covid-10 denial
  • Climate change denial.

In every case, they had free access to proven and verifiable scientific information and chose not to believe it. The whole TRA/MRA debate was also an eye-opener for me in that respect.

FatFredsFriedEgg · 04/03/2022 10:41

If he literally means for use by the Ukrainian Air Force then they either need to be types already on their inventory (e.g. MiG-29) to avoid having to retrain whatever pilots they have left or the west will have to provide the pilots as well………

What's happened to the MIGs allegedly promised by Poland, Romania etc. earlier this week?

workisnotawolf · 04/03/2022 10:41

“My best guess is that he expects the West to lose interest in sanctions when the headlines fade and the hit to our economies grow. The problem is that he's focused everyone's minds on energy security which will shrink his market for oil & gas within the next decade. As that's 60% of the exports, that's a massive export gap to replace. On top of that, Russia's got a well-documented brain drain problem and this war will aggravate that. Finally, it's population is shrinking due to Covid-19, structural health problems and a really low birth rate.“

I agree.
The BBC are starting to run the economic stories now.

I was wondering when the luxe brands were going to start making moves.
workisnotawolf · 04/03/2022 10:45

NATO is very defensive and so are our democracies.
If you think about it though there is some argument to be ambitious to free Russia and its people from this dictatorship and pave the way for Russia to align more closely with Western democracies. I am sure there would be plenty of appetite amongst young Russian.
Picking up on dreamingbohemians point - why are we all so beholden to the 70 plus generation?
Does the ageing of populations in the West due to modern medicine actually also have a general retro affect on our ideologies and progress? Because they tend to hold voting and asset power? It shouldn’t really be like that. The future belongs to the young.

@jgw1 it’s probably because it’s a readable link to the Times article that bypasses the paywall Blush Naughty CaveMum Wink

Very naughty. It was more the contrast with MNHQ's tardiness in removing vitriol posted on some threads about other posters.

MrsMillhouse · 04/03/2022 10:48

@Goatling yes! There are a couple of US airforce around the general area (not right beside the border or anything

valerianaofficiana · 04/03/2022 10:48

BBC reported yesterday that the sanctions will not be lifted until the leading figures of Russia's dictatorship have been brought to justice a la Slobodon Milacovic et al. Could be a while...🤨

ClaudineClare · 04/03/2022 10:48

I did wonder cavemum as you don't seem prone to posting deleteable comments!

FatFucker · 04/03/2022 10:48

@TheABC The whole TRA/MRA debate was also an eye-opener for me in that respect.

Without wishing to derail the thread, with respect I believe there is a huge difference between me and my adult disagreeing about whether humans can change sex and me believing him if he sent me pictures of a war zone from his local town.

On another note is there a thread on flight tracker, I must admit to being a bit obsessed with the comings and going of oligarchs' private jets and would like an expert opinion on what they think is going on.

Search function is shit on iPhone app.

No idea how that is working out..

I haven’t looked hard at exactly what’s supposedly been offered but even with that there could be problems if the “kit” on offer is not the same variant and has much the same weapons, countermeasures and avionics fit as the Ukraines are used to operating.

CaveMum · 04/03/2022 10:49

@jgw1 it may well be an automated thing as the website I posted to is a known archiving site so it may trigger a big red alarm at MNHQ Wink

Goatling · 04/03/2022 10:49

MrsMillhouse I've been tracking them since they flew over my house, just interested where they are going.

My guess is the sanctions will be used as some form of negotiation for a cease fire/withdrawal.
LindaEllen · 04/03/2022 10:51

I'm not sure why people are comforted by the fact that they've announced there's no nuclear material released from the fire.

Do you not remember the coverup at Chernobyl at the beginning of the biggest nuclear disaster known to this planet?

Andouillette · 04/03/2022 10:51

@yoolia

apparently only Ukrainians with family members are allowed to enter the UK?

That is correct.

It is correct for now. They extended the criterion 'family' to include many extra, a total of about 200,000 people. These people have pretty much automatic right of entry subject to application to weed out potential fake Ukrainians* trying to get in for nefarious purposes. I suspect we will be taking a lot more later but they will probably have to go through a more thorough application process if they cannot prove extended family membership. *Sorry, cannot think of a better way to put this.

Panicking and getting worked up with achieve exactly nothing though.
