Unbelievable. Thread 6 is almost full, to be found here : www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4495271-The-Invasion-is-ongoing-Part-6?pg=1

Still a fascinating and thoughtful set of documentation of our evolving thoughts, fears, questions, analyses and updates. And still a credit to the eyes, ears and knowledge of those on here.

Pinched from one poster on thread 6 whose name I can't recall:

Latest claims from both sides about casualties
Ukraine's army regularly puts out updates on the damage it says it's inflicting on Russian forces, which continue to press on key cities, particularly in the south.

We should stress that the BBC can't verify this information, but the latest update from the General Staff of the Armed Forces says that approximately 9,000 Russian personnel have been killed or wounded.

It also says Ukrainian forces have destroyed:

217 tanks
90 artillery systems
31 helicopters
30 planes or other aircraft
For its part, Russia yesterday for the first time gave a specific number for casualties it had suffered in Ukraine, saying 498 Russian soldiers had died and nearly 1,600 had been wounded.

It said it had killed 2,870 Ukrainian soldiers and "nationalists".

I was wondering when the luxe brands were going to start making moves.

It must be quite challenging trying to sell anything in a country where the local currency is subject to massive fluctuations and there's no legal way to get stable foreign currency out of the country.

valerianaofficiana · 04/03/2022 10:53

@work... what you're musing about would be invasion of a sovereign country (Russia 🙄) to force your notions, noble as they are, upon the populace, exactly what Putin is doing in Ukraine.

RedToothBrush · 04/03/2022 10:54

The decision to give 15 years for the spread of fake news has already 'mobilised' an army of Russian loyalists on Telegram to look for, and hunt down any Russian who puts anything anti-war.

The whole snitch on your neighbour (in the style of paedophile hunters) is already in progress....

Sheilablessus · 04/03/2022 10:54

It all moves so quickly, thank you all.
Has anyone a link to the "likely to declare martial law" item they could post for me.
Has there been a video of the attack on the General by a sniper, any links. DH tried YouTube, nothing.

yoolia · 04/03/2022 10:55

I'm not sure why people are comforted by the fact that they've announced there's no nuclear material released from the fire.

Do you not remember the coverup at Chernobyl at the beginning of the biggest nuclear disaster known to this planet?

That's the kind of thing I was referring to when I said some posters are trying to stir up anxiety.

"Have you got any hope about anything at all? Well YOU SHOULDN'T - HERE'S WHY!"

Jaguar Land Rover also suspended sales to Russia

But the reactor at Zaporizhzhia is no Chernobyl.

Chernobyl had no containment building, Zaporizhzhia is a modern reactor built to withstand an airplane crashing into it. The nuclear monitoring body has said there have been no detectable leaks and as a non-political organisation they have no reason to cover anything up.

If anything the rest of the world would jump at the chance to point out what a madman Putin is if a leak occurred.

theyhavenothingbuttheaudacity · 04/03/2022 10:58

Everyone is saying putin is a madman
Still here he is 8 days later

@HeadPain

Zelenskyy begs the West to send military planes for Ukraine to use. thoughts?
On the face of it, it sounds like a reasonable idea but unless somebody has a shitload of Migs hiding somewhere I don't see how it would work due to the training aspect. Does anybody with better knowledge of these things than me have an idea of how long it would take to train Ukrainian pilots to fly our much more advanced planes? Is it feasible?

Posters were panicking about a nuclear disaster so I thought the words of an expert might help them a bit, maybe the word reassurance was a bit clumsy

I looked at the source for this and translated it ukraine.segodnya.ua/amp-ukraine/evropa-peredast-ukraine-70-istrebiteley-mig-29-i-su-25-dlya-aviaudarov-po-agressoru-1605977.html

"Ukrainian pilots have already arrived in Poland for MiG-29 fighters. Our military will also receive missiles.
This was reported by People's Deputy of Ukraine Galina Tretyakova on Facebook.

"Our pilots already receive MiG-29 fighters and missiles in Poland," Tretyakova wrote.
People's Deputy Alexei Goncharenko wrote on Telegram that the Ukrainian army will receive another 70 aircraft.
"Our partners are giving us the Mig-29 and Su-25! If necessary, they will be able to be based at Polish airfields, from which Ukrainian pilots will perform combat missions," Goncharenko said.

Who will help:

Slovakia (Mig-29) - 12 pcs.
"If one "Ghost of Kiev" has already shot down 14 enemies, can you imagine what a team of 70 such will do to the enemy army? Friends, the victory itself asks for us!" Goncharenko added."

Zaporizhzhia is a modern reactor built to withstand an airplane crashing into it

That is reassuring.

I’m sure the BBC reported a few days after this that it wasn’t going ahead due to poland not having enough air crafts to defend theirselves if they was giving them to Ukraine

FatFredsFriedEgg · 04/03/2022 11:16

Anecdotally - absolutely anecdotally - I had a coffee at the burger van on my local industrial estate yesterday. Chatting with the lovely Romanian owners and a Polish van driver it was notable that they all agreed 'fuck NATO, we should be fighting the Russians now without NATO' (those were the Polish guy's words).

The Polish van driver was adamant that there's huge pressure on the Polish government to do something unilaterally.

Van drivers are van drivers though, and I can't take one man's opinion as the opinion of a whole country, but it had already occurred to me that Poland might be getting a bit 'restless'.

I'm not sure why people are comforted by the fact that they've announced there's no nuclear material released from the fire.

I'm reassured because the information regarding radioactive material is coming from a perfectly reputable source who have no vested interest in covering it up.

theyhavenothingbuttheaudacity · 04/03/2022 11:19

If it was a fair fight though Putin knows his days would be numbered. Enemies all over the globe would join to see his demise.
Sadly it's not a fair fight as we all know he just flexes his nukes like a spoilt kid who knows there's only such much his parents can do to discipline him

They've just said on the news that the nuclear reactor is designed to withstand a plane crashing into it but it's unknown what would happen if it were to be struck by missiles.

I'm finding the Orwellian language around this war really sinister. The Russians are 'liberators,' Ukrainians are 'Nazis,' civilians are 'human shields,' and so on. In the last few decades academia has allowed language to be gutted of meaning and now we are starting to see the concrete consequences of that shift. It always benefits the powerful.

More from Grossi

Posted at 10:4310:43
International Atomic Energy Agency head offers to travel to Chernobyl
Here's more from Rafael Grossi, head of the UN nuclear watchdog the IAEA, on the Russian attack on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

He says he has offered to travel to Chernobyl - the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster in 1986 - to negotiate with Ukraine and Russia on ensuring the security of Ukraine's nuclear sites.

"I have indicated to both the Russian Federation and Ukraine my availability... to travel to Chernobyl as soon as possible," he told reporters.

Both sides were considering the possibility, he added.

Grossi added that any trip would take place after his return from Tehran, Iran's capital, on Saturday.

@ItsDisneyBitch

**Ohmnomnom

I follow someone on Instagram that has been booking Airbnbs in Ukraine. Obviously not planning to stay there but its a way to get money directly into the hands of the Ukrainian people.

Yes I’m tempted.

I also saw something similar about buying digital art from Ukrainian sellers on Etsy a few days ago. Although by this point they might not even be able to deliver that, depending on where they are in Ukraine, so whether that means the transaction would no longer be processed I don't know. (I'm not suggesting they should have to deliver, only that it might affect them being able to collect payment, I dunno?)

Putin

President Putin has warned those opposing Russia's actions in Ukraine "not to exacerbate the situation" by imposing more restrictions on his country.

The Russian president was speaking at a government meeting broadcast on the state-controlled Rossiya 24 news channel.

"We have no ill intentions against our neighbours," Putin claims.

And he says his government sees "no need" for its neighbours to take further action that will "make our relations worse".

"I think everyone must think about how to normalise relations, co-operate normally and develop relations normally," he adds.

It comes as foreign ministers from across the West gather in Brussels to consider how to maintain pressure on Russia.

Putin also repeats his previous claim that all action taken by the Russian military so far has been made "exclusively in response to some unfriendly actions against the Russian Federation".
