The cost of holidays

Is it just me or is it very expensive? I'm looking at breaks in Europe and it definitely seems more expensive than I had remembered! Anyone found any bargains?

It depends on what you’re looking for, today I booked return flights to Tenerife for £55 each and we’ll be £300 for an apartment for a week

thebigpurpleone · 03/03/2022 20:12

@JudgeRindersMinder woah, i can't find any good flights!

OP posts:
JudgeRindersMinder · 03/03/2022 20:22

These flights were released today, I had notification from the EasyJet app. It helps that we’re at the age/stage where we can actively avoid school holidays though!

thebigpurpleone · 03/03/2022 20:38

So am I! I'll look on easyjet

We went to Lanzarote in 2017 - we being me, DH and DD.

EXACTLY the same holiday this year (same place, all inclusive again and same child albeit she's now 15) and it is DOUBLE the price.

We're going to the Lakes instead ......

thebigpurpleone · 03/03/2022 22:02

Double, yikes. Yeh I just can't bring myself to pay over a grand for self catering in an old fashioned apartment in May!

VeniVidiWeeWee · 03/03/2022 22:14

I like the Seaside Jameos Playa in Lanzarote. Going there in May.

Just checked their website and it's £780 b&b, 840 half board or 1088 all inclusive.

That's for 2 people, not including flights.

BabyTurtIe · 03/03/2022 22:16

I thought the opposite was looking recently and can’t believe how cheap it is as I was going to take my kids away in the U.K. but going abroad would be cheaper!

thebigpurpleone · 03/03/2022 22:17

@BabyTurtIe where was that?

OP posts:
Lysianthus · 03/03/2022 22:43

Register with Travelzoo, they've got some amazing deals

BabyTurtIe · 03/03/2022 22:49

I was looking at jet2, I was planning to take them to butlins (not where I would want to go but was desperate for a break away!) but wasn’t worth it would rather go abroad and I was expecting it to be much more but could go away for cheaper.

Mummyme87 · 03/03/2022 22:53

Yeah holidays aren’t cheap.
We’ve Paid £3600 for 2 adults 2 children (4 and 8) for an AI week in Cyprus. Maybe it’s not more expensive just feels it

MrPenguinsPoppers · 03/03/2022 23:00

Ive just rebooked flights to LA from 2020. They were about £300 cheaper overall for the two of us. One lot of accommodation is exactly the same price but the other about £300 more expensive so all in all it’s worked out roughly the same.

Our travel insurance has rocketed though, assume with COVID but DH has turned 50 in the meantime which has probably increased it as well.

Changemaname1 · 03/03/2022 23:02

@BabyTurtIe same !

Am looking for Easter altho will likely fly a day earlier and miss a day of school to make it cheaper in fairness but a lot less than I thought !

BirdOnTheWire · 03/03/2022 23:04

I have booked an apartment in the UK for a week and it's costing £2000. Admittedly it's very a luxurious 3 bed, 3 bathroom place in a prime location but still - British weather.
I'm also booking a week in a 5* hotel in Lanzarote for 3 adults £ 2600.
I know which one I think is best value.

namechangeanonymous · 04/03/2022 07:52

We've paid less than £800 for an all inclusive 4* with flights in lanzarote for a week for two.

IsDaveThere · 04/03/2022 09:19

I'm going to Turkey for a week at the end of May (not half-term though) for £1050 for 2 of us. To be honest, that is the roughly the same price that I paid pre-pandemic so hasn't increased.

JudgeRindersMinder · 04/03/2022 10:02

Where are you looking? Ours is £300 for a week. Look at private rentals
uggmum · 04/03/2022 10:07

I have booked a jet2 holiday to Rome. They had £50 off per person.

I got the price from them and asked Trailfinders to beat it and they gave me a further £60 off.

I also booked another to Croatia. Got a £200 discount and asked an independent travel agent to beat the price. He offered me a further £52 off.

So it is worth getting an online price with the airline and trying to get an extra discount with an Agent

dontblamemee · 04/03/2022 13:46

We're going to lake Garda at May half term - 2 adults 2 teens and 2 little ones. £1700 self catering for the week. I thought that was pretty good! I do think prices will be outrageous going forward with the increase in fuel prices and everything else. Might be our last holiday for a while.

Juno22 · 04/03/2022 14:00

It's supply and demand. Lots of people haven't had summer holidays for 2 years and so more people are booking. Equally airlines, holiday companies and hotels are seeking to recoup the revenues they've lost over the last 2 years.

That's where we went/we're going! It's a smashing hotel
BirdOnTheWire · 05/03/2022 11:35

I had a look at the Jameos, it does look good, I was looking at a couple in PB.

One thing to remember is that you can reduce the cost by flying from a bigger airport at an anti social hour. You can also opt for the most basic rooms.

I priced it up for us, based on AI. Two superior rooms and regional daytime flights
at end of April £3663.
Same date but manchester and basic rooms £2730.
That's with Jet2 I t was much more expensive booking direct.

jessy100 · 05/03/2022 12:13

Loads of bargains to be had! Going to Budapest soon . We paid £60 each return flights, and then £160 for a gorgeous studio apartment for four nights.

JustFrustrated · 05/03/2022 12:15

We just paid, and had the holiday,

Egypt 1 week all inclusive, 2 adults and 2 children, 2 rooms £2.3k

Not expensive.

New York in October, 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 rooms - flights as well £2.5k for 4 nights.

Not expensive.

I do think Europe is more expensive than elsehwere.
