I’m listening to Wahala by Nikki May.

It’s pretty good! A bit slow to begin with. Anyone else read/listened to Wahala?

Any recommendations for my next book?

I’ve never listened to a Dr Who but loved the telly programme (well, some of the seasons 😀 not so much the more recent ones!) How do they compare? Would you recommend them?

Some are good. Some are basically the same as the TV series but there are now quite a few with new stories. There are some of the 'war doctor' about the time wars and quite a few add ons, tales about Who characters in heir own right.

EdwinsActsOfKindness · 02/03/2022 11:23

Thanks! I’ll have to give them a try!

Delphinium20 · 02/03/2022 17:29

With all that's going on in the world and my high-stress job, I needed something hilarious and lighthearted and stumbled on Rosie Reed's Murder at Magic Cakes Cafe. Just what I needed - a murder mystery with a flirty romantic lead. Great book and happy it's a series so I can binge.

Hare House by Sally Hinchcliffe - it's awful, don't bother!

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry followed by The Love Song of Queenie Hennessy by Rachel Joyce were lovely.

I agree with the recommendation for Hamnet by Maggie Oliver - the story and the style of the production went really well together.

@Dodie66

The murderers son by Joy Ellis Brilliant detective series.I’m on book one
I've just finished this series and enjoyed them all.

@D0lphine

True blood... in my defence I need something nice and brainless hahaha
I love True Blood on audible.

Currently listening to The Maid by Nita Prose and really enjoying it.

Baboutheocelot · 02/03/2022 20:15

Currently listening to and enjoying the night watch by Sarah Waters.

I’ve also listened to the hearts invisible furies and I agree with others, it’s brilliant.

D0lphine · 02/03/2022 20:20

@cato75

Which is your fave? Current on book 3

Scout2016 · 02/03/2022 20:25

Finding Heart's Invisible Furies a bit too contrived. Too many coincidences and big dramas, but then I'd say that about Dickens too so what do I know?!

I loved The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd.

ruthypfdraper · 02/03/2022 20:26

American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins. Really enjoying it.

I think I enjoyed the first and second the most with the Fellowship of the Sun.

BillMasheen · 02/03/2022 21:01

Complete George Smiley with Simon Russell Beale - I could listen to him reading the phone book. 26 hours of Cold War heaven

Oh god. I completely agree

MavisEnderby74 · 02/03/2022 21:16

Just finished Animal Farm read by Stephen Fry. It's probably 30 years since I last read it, and I'd forgotten a lot of it. Downside is I listen in bed and usually fall asleep so end up having to replay chapters.

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 02/03/2022 21:17

Just finished Again, Rachel by Marian Keyes, really enjoyed it.
I always have a few on the go..Currently listening to
The Compassionate Mind by Paul Gilbert
Ruby Wax’s No Brainer - It’s All in the Mind
Marie Antoinette by Antonia Fraser
Mindfulness by Trish Bartley
The Boleyn Inheritance by Philippa Gregory

I like historical fiction and stuff about the mind.

MistyFuckingQuigley · 02/03/2022 21:21

@SorryPardonWhat

Lady in Waiting by Anna Glenconner, beautifully read by her too. Fascinating and addictive, highly recommended. Makes me look forward to my commute!
I think I'm going to have to read this book. I tried the audible sample and just couldn't stand the narrator's voice. Too posh, which doesn't say much about me does it Grin
MegBusset · 02/03/2022 21:22

Currently listening to Tale Of Two Cities read very enthusiastically by Simon Callow. It's a free one.

Recently loved The Fall (Robert Maxwell biog) by John Preston, and Bob Mortimer's autobiography.

nodtik · 02/03/2022 21:31

Nothing very high brow I'm afraid.
Just finished Dream Weavers by Barbara Erskine and working my way through the Chronicles of St Mary's series by Jodi Taylor. There are several short stories free on audible in this series too.
