I’m listening to Wahala by Nikki May.

It’s pretty good! A bit slow to begin with. Anyone else read/listened to Wahala?

Any recommendations for my next book?

Last Three :

Go Tell The Bees That I'm Gone - Diana Gabaldon. Have read all 9 in the series, it's good but could have done with better editing. Davina Porter as always is a brilliant narrator.

The Alice Network- Kate Quinn. Really really good book about French Resistance based on the story of Catherine Dior. Narration pretty good to by Saskia Maarleveld.

Dublin - Edward Rutherfurd. Had already listened to Sarum, NY, The Forest and Paris, this one as good. Narration by Patrick Moy was OK.

The Redeemer, in the Harry Hole series by Jo Nesbø. It’s not the best in the series, it meanders a bit, but still good. Excellently read by Sean Barrett (who does the Slough House series too, also excellent).

NarrowHippedVixen · 02/03/2022 07:53

Anne of Green Gables, read by Rachel McAdams - I think she does it absolutely beautifully.

Written in Bone by Sue Black. She’s a forensic anthropologist, and it is fascinating.

I've been a member for 10 years, and have just under 1000 audible books. I am finding it hard to find new ones I like now though. I always look through the new releases each month. There only seems to be a fantasy or bodice ripper types at the moment.

I love a good police procedural ( Val McDirmand, Ely Griffith and Stuart McBride being favourites)

The Outlander Series is a bit different than I usually listen too ( I read the first back in the 90's) but they are my all time favourites.

Don't usually like celeb autobiographies, but do like history ones, especially S.O.E types.

Anyone got any good ideas. ?

Sorry Op should have started my own thread.

Lady in Waiting by Anna Glenconner, beautifully read by her too. Fascinating and addictive, highly recommended. Makes me look forward to my commute!

buckeejit · 02/03/2022 08:03

Just finishing the 5 about Jack the Ripper's victims.

Loved the hearts invisible furies, I love an Irish narrator!

Sorrow & bliss was an unexpected recent treasure

'Maybe you should talk to someone' by Lori Gottlieb

LG is an experienced therapaist in LA with a busy practice.
When problems come into her own life she too goes to see a therapist.
She reads this book which is about her working through her problems and how she helps others overcome theirs.
Described as a 'funny memoir' on Amazon, it is funny but some of her cases are very sad.
Fascinating. I found it in my local online library.

Currently listening to SPQR by Mary Beard . It's interesting while I'm listening to it but I couldn't tell you afterwards who is who. I share an audible account with 14 year old DS and it's actually one of his choices.

Books of my own choice that I have enjoyed - Between the Stops by Sandi Toksvig , It's not rocket science, by Ben Miller , Half of a yellow sun, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi , 23 things they don't tell you about capitalism .

rookiemere · 02/03/2022 08:06

Lisa Jewell - The Making of Us.

I find her novels can be hit of miss, but I'm really enjoying this one about adults conceived from the same sperm donor discovering about each other and their pasts.

florianfortescue · 02/03/2022 08:11

The Miriam Margolyes is absolutely brilliant.

I've just finished the Balkan Trilogy by Olivia Manning, read by Harriet Walter. All about Romania during the Second World War. Another brilliant find, I've raced through it. Her accents are amazing!

Storm Front by Jim Butcher

Stefanie Powers reading her autobiography. Fascinating. Makes me exhausted just listening!

The Year At Thrush Green by Miss Read.

The real world feels so grim and I've got covid so this is aural balm to me.

anotherbloodyyearofcovid · 02/03/2022 08:24

Louis Theroux, gotta get theroux this, and theroux the keyhole.

EdwinsActsOfKindness · 02/03/2022 08:28

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. Am really enjoying it. Even DH and DD have started listening in when I have it on!

GnomeDePlume · 02/03/2022 08:30

@Maggiesgirl if you haven't tried them already the DI Logan series by JD Kirk are good. I'm on my second one now after a recommendation by DD1.

I have particularly enjoyed the Falco murder mysteries both first and second generation. I find the minutiae of Roman life fascinating. About 30 books in all.

Ruth Goodman's How to be a Victorian was a very good listen if domestic history interests you.

The Dangerous Davies series by Leslie Thomas are entertaining.

DH is a Bernard Cornwell fan (Sharpe, Last Kingdom etc). Well researched whichever period he is writing about.

Simon Brett has written a number of light mysteries.

ApolloandDaphne · 02/03/2022 08:34

A Terrible Kindness by Jo Browning Wroe. It is very good.

I read this before Wahala. It’s bonkers!! I thoroughly enjoyed it, much more than I thought I would.

I am ploughing through the Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffiths. Now on book 9 I think, and it's just starting to pall a little.

I like a detective story on my dogwalk. But I did love the sense of place and beautiful writing of Bitter Orange by Clare Fuller.

OneToThree · 02/03/2022 09:29

@PeggyGa I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy it or not but his life has been so interesting, I loved it.

Dr Who : 10th doctor tales
I’ve never listened to a Dr Who but loved the telly programme (well, some of the seasons 😀 not so much the more recent ones!) How do they compare? Would you recommend them?
