Pancake judgement...who knew?!

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 01/03/2022 10:13

Work with about 30 people and decided to do something nice and offered to make pancakes for everyone today.

Spoke to boss and authorised some petty cash for ingredients and I brought in various toppings I had at home.

Emailed everyone letting them know and what toppings I'd have and said that if people wanted anything specific or had toppings they wanted to share to bring them in as I only had what I had outlined.

Today, already, I've had 5 different conversations with people either complaining that I don't have their favourite topping, that the toppings I have aren't the right quality (ie own brand golden syrup) etc. One guy is in a strop because I haven't brought in honey, but have golden syrup as an alternative. Apparently shows I have poor taste. Wtf! Why am I bothering??

Hi.

There are only 2 toppings required. Cheese (extra mature cheddar, grated) for mains and lemon and white sugar for pudding.

End of.

AStar98 · 01/03/2022 12:14

Who knew pancake day could be so political?!
But seriously? I agree with you, not sure why you thought it was a good idea to cater for 30 colleagues... perhaps next time think about how it would go down with 30 children and you have your answer Grin

Enjoy your pancakes!

Someone has just come in with some ready made pancakes.

I'm leaving.

@Urbanisation

So you have a fully equipped kitchen at work including a cooker? Who is responsible for it? The whole thing sounds weird.
We have a full kitchen in our office. It's lovely.

Op, people seems to complain more when its free. Pisses me right off. I would love someone to make my pancakes.

FelicityPike · 01/03/2022 12:30

If you put a tenner on everyone’s seat, they would mean that it wasn’t £20.

Sorry OP.

DoYouWantDecking · 01/03/2022 12:31

Ungrateful wankers.

Do they know it is YOUR OWN toppings you are supplying or do they think work is providing everything?

Definitely keep the toppings on your own desk and tell everyone else to moans to fuck right off.

OutlookStalking · 01/03/2022 12:35

Where do you work? I want free cereal and a beverage station and I would LOVE your pancakes. (fed up of my current work!)

Rockbird · 01/03/2022 12:38

There is nowhere like Mumsnet for passing a million judgements and sneery "oh is this a thing" comments on a perfectly innocent thread. Hmm. It never disappoints. I wonder at people who read a thread about cooking and expect the OP to go "fuck me, I need a cooker? Who knew!"

Your colleagues sound like miserable tossers OP. I'll gladly eat your pancakes.

TheOldLadyOfThreadneedleStreet · 01/03/2022 12:45

I’ve had to get berries, biscoff spread (only crunchy will do) and new maple syrup for my fussy lot. But at least they will be happy when they eat them. Your workplace sounds awful OP and very draining. The few times I’ve taken anything home made into work they have always been extremely appreciative.

godmum56 · 01/03/2022 12:46

@MsMiaWallace

They're tossers! lol I know
I see what you did there Grin
CheshireChat · 01/03/2022 12:47

Hah, very having Chinese style pancakes with cream cheese and salmon/ cucumber as I have no time to make them today. And maybe bubble waffles for desert.

nearlyretired · 01/03/2022 12:52

We mix Dutch style with UK - bacon, cheese and stroop (or maple syrup as can't find stroop in UK) pancake to start followed by lemon and sugar - only way to go :)

hazandduck · 01/03/2022 12:54

OP slight tangent but you have to try savoury pancakes! I didn’t realise until adulthood it was weird…my mum always did them, we’d have them with a kind of spiced beef ragu filling, with spicy roast potatoes on the side and baked beans, sounds weird but all together it is amazing! And we’d have sugary ones for pudding. I wish I was good at making pancakes so I could introduce my kids to the same meal! In fact I might give it a whirl tonight…wish me luck 😬

Shop bought pancakes are like shop bought cake. Vile.

Your team are lucky to have you @SliceOfCakeCupOfTea

Mumsnet is so dramatic. Shop bought cake is absolutely fine and not “vile”.
Ohfgsnotagain · 01/03/2022 13:04

You should’ve just done the traditional lemon and sugar and people can take it or leave it!

It’s a really nice thing you’ve tried to do.

NorthSouthcatlady · 01/03/2022 13:07

They sound bratty and ungrateful. Few free to come to my house. Me, my fiancé and the friend painting our house will be super grateful

I’m Hmm about slimy pancakes. Rude and how does she know the texture of your pancakes?’

Shock

Feckin pancake judgers, bonding over their pancake judginess.

Stay calm, OP. You’ve got this. 🥞🥞🥞

Your colleagues are being wankers. Fine to not like something but a polite no thank you is all that's required.

The toppings don't bother me as much as the actual pancake. I remember as a child being served a pancake and it was thin with lemon juice and sugar and was gutted because I pictured a Scotch pancake which is much thicker and is delicious topped with butter. Scotch pancakes with butter/peanut butter or big fluffy Amercian style pancakes with white chocolate chips in the batter or nutella plus bacon and maple syrup are the only ones we make at home.

I'd never be rude about what someone else prepared but I'm always disappointed when I hear pancake but then see those wee thin things.

I'm converted. Will be trying these (in a fashion) with this evening's batch of pancakes.

Do you use the same batter for the savory as you do the sweet?

I'm a crepe style pancake woman through and through but I do like a good fat pancake every now and then. Cant eat as many of those though

Agree with everyone, people who complain about free stuff are jerks.

Weirdly the best thing I ever took into work, the thing that everyone was just happy about and smiled and said thanks for was a load the pots of individual jellies and a couple of cans of squirty cream.

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 01/03/2022 13:33

My DC request 3 types of pancakes and each type has its own traditional toppings, from the 3 countries in our family background lol
