Pancake judgement...who knew?!

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 01/03/2022 10:13

Work with about 30 people and decided to do something nice and offered to make pancakes for everyone today.

Spoke to boss and authorised some petty cash for ingredients and I brought in various toppings I had at home.

Emailed everyone letting them know and what toppings I'd have and said that if people wanted anything specific or had toppings they wanted to share to bring them in as I only had what I had outlined.

Today, already, I've had 5 different conversations with people either complaining that I don't have their favourite topping, that the toppings I have aren't the right quality (ie own brand golden syrup) etc. One guy is in a strop because I haven't brought in honey, but have golden syrup as an alternative. Apparently shows I have poor taste. Wtf! Why am I bothering??

I'm struggling with the logistics of this tbh.

Are you cooking the pancakes at work? If so, how? If not, are cold pancakes a "thing"?

HelenWick · 01/03/2022 11:17

Big smile:
"You are right, this is a poor show, I am so sorry. You won't be wanting one will you. Next!"

HelenWick · 01/03/2022 11:18

I also grew up outside the UK and find british pancakes weird and slimy but I am far to polite to say anything and limit myself to a moderate 6-8 pancakes per sitting.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea, I don't know! She is a food bore generally. I think some people just like to assert their superiority over people by being more 'discerning' about crap like that.

RonniePickering · 01/03/2022 11:26

Oh yeah, if you want to find out how ungrateful people are, give them free stuff

A million times this 😤

In the kitchen in a pan on the hob. Same way I'd do them at home.

@Cocomarine

Ah, but what sugar? My teen has instructed me to make sure we have icing sugar. This will be for a TikTok worthy dusting, no doubt. She’d fit in well with your colleagues 🤣
Nooooo. No. No. No.

Icing sugar does not belong on pancakes!

Some people bond together while complaining about stuff, so maybe you are fulfilling your team building duties. They can chat and discuss all about how much better they would have organised pancake day and which quality toppings would have been best.
You are doing a nice thing, so just make sure you get an extra pancake for yourself, to give them something else to complain about

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 01/03/2022 11:34
@cocomarine 😮😮😮 icing sugar??! That sounds very, very wrong.

That said my DD has either cheese or peanut butter on hers which feels like sacrilege.
Savoury pancakes are the best! Cheese and sweetcorn on mine. 😋 My mum makes them like a pizza (no tomato base) and they’re delicious. A sweet pancake for pudding as well. Yum!

Kitchen at work just to clarify...I won't be serving cold pancakes.

They're all savages. The only thing you have on your pancakes is white granulated sugar and a squeezy Jif lemon.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 01/03/2022 11:36

Never tried a savory pancake...

OP posts:
DameHelena · 01/03/2022 11:36

Sugar should be white granulated, and the first pancake should always be topped with this, lemon and nothing else.
The best savoury pancake is ham, cheese, spinach and sweetcorn.

No further questions.

CommonPrimrose · 01/03/2022 11:37

UK pancakes are thinner, so smoother and chewier than US ones I've had. Imo they are better but need the grittiness of granulated sugar to contrast with that texture and then the lemon to cut through the fattiness.

wishtotravel: So true about bonding through moaning.

sonjadog · 01/03/2022 11:40

I used to make pancakes for my colleagues in my old job. I had forgotten about it until now. Yes, people will complain about anything! Enjoy your pancakes. I also used to make waffles a couple of times a term. Just a small thing, but it made a lot of people happy (even the complainers, I think they just enjoy complaining)!

Urbanisation · 01/03/2022 11:44

So you have a fully equipped kitchen at work including a cooker? Who is responsible for it? The whole thing sounds weird.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 01/03/2022 11:45

Thing is, we quite often cook for each other. Can't always cook for 30 people so people tend to group together and cook for their immediate teams, or we'll buy in a load of pizza bases and do a pizza station.

There is a woman who makes the most amazing chilli. She has it slow cooking in the kitchen from about 9am to serve up around lunch time 🤤

I always have had this at places I have worked. Schools and universities. Is it really that weird? I didn't realise it wasn't usual.

Urbanisation · 01/03/2022 11:53

I've never worked anywhere that staff had a cooker or pots and pans. A microwave and kettle if you're lucky and no one takes responsibility for them so the microwave ends up manky.

Yeah. The building owner wanted a proper kitchen.

I've worked somewhere with a fully equipped kitchen too, never thought it was odd. Was really helpful as the office was rural.

They get cleaned daily by the cleaners so not manky. We've got a microwave too and hot bev stations and a breakfast station with a selection of cereals

Remember last pancake day? We were all coming out of hard lockdown in the UK. My lovely Dsis decided to do a drive through pancake day at her house so we could all drive through and collect a pancake that she'd made with a pre-arranged choice of toppings and eat them in our own cars without getting out while waving at each other and sobbing a bit

Isn't that lovely?

Her SiL moaned and moaned because her particular favourite topping wasn't included.

That's what happens when you are nice OP. Learn the lesson.

RonniePickering · 01/03/2022 12:06

We have a cooker and a microwave in my office, it's not that weird. We don't have anyone making pancakes though unfortunately 🥞
