As above

OP posts:

The lady across the road from me who I know very well, her son was in Russia his wife is Russian and their daughter. They have packed a suitcase each took a flight to Turkey then from Turkey back to the UK. They said they couldn’t afford food because they couldn’t access their money.

It’s very sad for normal people on both sides. They knew exactly what was going on but most of their info came from my neighbour.

Libertybear80 · 11/03/2022 16:57

God Putin is a monster isn't he. He's not even bothered about harming Russians and ruining the young peoples lives. Let alone what he's inflicting on Ukrainians!

YeOldeTrout · 11/03/2022 18:16

I fully agree that ordinary Russians are victims, too.

Suzi888 · 11/03/2022 18:21

Some will agree with Putin and some won’t. I’m sure some people like Hitler Hmm

PupInAPram · 11/03/2022 18:24

@DetailMouse

Why are "we" so convinced that out version of the propaganda is the correct version?

I'm not saying it's not, but we know the news is manipulated by our politicans all the time.

Isn't it likely that the truth is somewhere between the two?

I look at news on Reuters, Al Jazeera, Sky and the BBC. I believe Ukraine has been invaded and Russia is targeting civilian targets.
Chloemol · 11/03/2022 19:22
@MamaUmki agree the fake news on both sides is atrocious. But countries outside Europe are taking a more measured and analytical view of the war. Here is one:

And another from South Africa urging peace: www.iol.co.za/news/world/ousted-ukrainian-president-urges-zelensky-to-stop-bloodshed-97969245-3170-5890-b671-bef860d6c4f0

There are more voices calling for peace: theweek.com/politics/1011048/peace-in-ukraine-is-worth-putins-price I hope they are listened to.

And I hope there are some useful negotiations soon. Ordinary Ukrainians are paying a fatal price in this conflict.
Those are not impartial and certainly it’s disappointing that one thinks Ukraine should just give into Russia’s demands

Why should they!

Anoooshka · 11/03/2022 19:30

@Woollystockings

I might be a bit concerned that pro-kremlin bots in various countries have found/will find this thread. Some of those links… hm.
Pro-Kremlin bots have been all over social media for years. You only have to read some of the posts on here to see that.
Anoooshka · 11/03/2022 19:32

There are an increasing number of "both sides" posts on any Ukraine discussion on Mumsnet, and many of them have Indian sounding usernames. Has anyone else noticed this?

Anoooshka · 11/03/2022 19:35
@CleverKnot Simon Reeve did a travel programme to Crimea which is how I learnt about Ukraine cutting off their water supply. Then they had the worst drought ever in 2020.
The Ukrainian Information Minister complained about the programme.
Russia has bombed the Ukrainian dam now so water will flow soon
www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b099127q
Russia invaded Crimea and is illegally occupying it. That's why the water supply was cut off.

Buttons294749 · 11/03/2022 19:40

Collueagues in the moscow office are very upset about putin's actions, they speak with genuine passion (although very careful what they say) so i believe them.

meduskuka · 11/03/2022 19:51

I am a Russian speaking person from one of the Baltic countries. My grandparents were from Russia, and I still have some relatives in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Novgorod. All of them do not support this war. I was absolutely horrified when learned about this so called "special operation". Almost all my friends are appalled as well. But my husbands family, who are also from Baltics but have lived in UK for over 15 year are supporting Putin. Their only source of news are Russian tv channels they watch here. We have had a massive fall out over it, to the point that my SIL blocked me on WhatsApp. Their excuse is that there was no worlds outcry when Russian speaking people where killed in Donbas for 8 years. They( my relatives) see it as protection of those people, as Ukraine failed to do anything about it.

lillyjemima · 11/03/2022 19:54

Hope you're ok @MamaUmki. Such an awful time. It must be so hard for you and your family ThanksThanksThanksThanks

Sadly I wish your comment were true but its not.

Amrapaali

@MamaUmki agree the fake news on both sides is atrocious“

What is “fake” about the UK reports?

Ulchabhan · 11/03/2022 20:45

Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister yesterday

“ We didn’t attack Ukraine”

Would be funny if it was not so tragic.

justasking111 · 11/03/2022 21:28

OH and I disagree over the Ukrainian people, I think they're being painted as a saintly vulnerable country when the truth is much less flattering. He thinks they're wonderful and the Russian army led by Putin are evil

As for media coverage they're all lying IMO

@MamaUmki I’m so sorry to hear that people have been targetting you and your son, that is totally unforgiveable.
💐

Papertyger · 11/03/2022 21:46

Both side posts?

No

I see obvious support for Putin and anger about the supposed " neo Nazis" element in Ukraine.

I see the far left type's promoting Corybn style wicked west aren't we dreadful posts.

I see posters who like me are swinging from - we know we don't want ww3 but how can we be watching people die when we do have the arms to repel them?

How?

Then I see intellengent posters who mull over lot's of different outcomes, reasons, background, scenarios etc.

Then the patronising posters who sit waiting for posts that aren't PhD standard and wail " what am I reading, are you British".

Papertyger · 11/03/2022 21:47

And I think posters saying " how do we know what we are seeing" are correct.

It's vital that we do always question everything!
Otherwise how do we know?

Katya213 · 11/03/2022 21:53

I would be too paranoid to speak anywhere about it. Russians abroad are very fearful to speak out against their country even though they are appalled at what’s happening.

I can understand that I have family living in China. We here some stories when they visit. They wouldn't talk about it on line or over a phone line
Bunnyfuller · 12/03/2022 00:21

By assuming the west is being told the absolute truth you miss the point that ALL media are in some way aligned to political aims. None of us truly know what is factual or not. In the west, we assume ours is ‘right’.

Things mentioned in the Brexit campaign should have made this obvious.

And as strongly as we believe the collapse of the USSR and perestroika were the start of a brave new age, millions of Russians and ex Soviets are convinced their troubles were caused by Westetn interference.

In answer to your question: those in the east wish east/west would just agree to disagree, and they feel the current crisis is caused by western expansion

LINABE · 12/03/2022 00:33
@DetailMouse it doesn't matter what the truth of the political situation is.
The fact is that Ukrainians are being shelled out of their homes and many have been killed.
That's more than propaganda.
Yes, this.

TooBigForMyBoots · 12/03/2022 01:28

Does anyone believe the west is being told the absolute truth? What does that even mean?Confused We are more fortunate than previous generations in that we have easy free access to international media.

Putin is a cunt and he looks like Envy.
