Can someone help me understand the sanctions against Russia?

I’ve done a bit of reading and understand the Swift payment sanction and Germany with Nordstream.
What I don’t understand is the new wave of sanctions that seems to be specifically targeting the people - not allowing their children in western schools for example.
Removing property from Russians in the UK.

I understand the removal of assets from Putin’s so called oligarch friends - is the thinking there that they will force something to happen? Do they have that power?

I have to confess to feeling a certain amount of reassurance that the red button wouldn’t be pressed due to the amount of Russian interest in the UK, but it seems like we are removing a lot of it? And does much of it actually affect Putin himself or is it more about cutting Russia off as a whole and hoping some kind of action from within is taken (which seems unlikely to me?)?

These sanctions will remove public support, couple this with the significant and unexpected military deaths, Putin will become too unpopular to lead.

youhadmeatjello · 27/02/2022 07:54

The thing that I can’t get my head around though is his public support has been waning for years. He doesn’t seem to care and it’s not like the people of Russia can realistically overthrow him, they get arrested for protesting! But is that essentially the aim?

Is there any chance that someone inside might end Putin ?

User76745333 · 27/02/2022 07:55

By tagtgetting those with wealth you put pressure in them which in turn reduces their support for putin’s actions.

lightand · 27/02/2022 07:56

There are people wotking for Putin, either willingly or not.
When things start to affect them personally on the home front, they may waver.
No bad thing, eh?

It looks like the giver are being pro active & keeps the U.K. electorate appeased

The reality of the action is different, Putin has been planning and plotting this for considerable time, he isn’t going to be swayed by other.

vinoandbrie · 27/02/2022 08:08

These Russian oligarchs who are pals with Putin want and crave entry to British high society, sending their kids to top public schools etc.

By revoking their kids’ visas that allow them to attend these prestigious schools, by confiscating their yachts, by freezing their assets etc, it will hit these revolting oligarchs where it hurts and lessen their support for Putin, bringing pressure to bear on him. Hit them (and Putin) where it hurts.

ivykaty44 · 27/02/2022 08:11

How is going to hit Putin where it hurts? In what way will it hurt him?

vinoandbrie · 27/02/2022 08:18

By significantly reducing the support Putin has from this gang who are close to him. My fervent hope is that his support crumbles, both at oligarch level, and at Russian person on the street in Russia level, and that he is toppled. Is this incredibly naive? Perhaps. But I can hope.

The2Omicronnies · 27/02/2022 08:25

I fear all these sanctions will lead Putin to think he has nothing left to lose and therefore push him to do something even more unhinged than he already is. Russia are losing out culturally, financially, societally and sportingly…what will they have left? How will it work to reintegrate Russia and their people back into the world? Surely this cannot happen during Putin’s time.

GeneLovesJezebel · 27/02/2022 08:28

I don’t see Putin as a man who would back down or surrender.
I think the end to this comes from inside Russia, and a brave person stopping him.

ivykaty44 · 27/02/2022 08:30

Putin has put in place everything he needs, knowing these sanctions would happen. Putin knew when he invaded that the sanctions would happen and what they would be, he’s not going to be concerned about losing support

He poisoned someone in Salisbury and a year later our PM took £1.8m from Russian oligarch
Who’s in control of who here?

vinoandbrie · 27/02/2022 08:33

What do you think should be done instead?

youhadmeatjello · 27/02/2022 08:37

@The2Omicronnies that’s how I feel. He’s already unhinged, surely this will just push him to think fuck it. If his legacy is already tarnished what’s he got to lose by going out with a bang?
I don’t know what the solution is. It’s a very worrying and scary situation.

This has been like a chess game over several years and Putin has just taken our Queen, we shouldn’t have let that happen & it’s to late to get that piece back

ivykaty44 · 27/02/2022 08:42

Why do you think Putin is unhinged?
Ukraine is a honey pot of wealth and Putin wants that

How is that different from U.K. or US invading countries?

vinoandbrie · 27/02/2022 08:47

So you wouldn’t do anything?

ivykaty44 · 27/02/2022 08:48

Yes, but 7 years ago, not now

That sounds about right. They help fund his regime. By sanctioning the oligarchs you are in essence sanctioning the state.

Have you listened to some of his speeches??

Well I guess we’re going to see aren’t we. I’m hoping that if his inner circle think he’s going to take everyone out with him they’ll organise a nasty accident for him. Even if he is suicidal the people around him won’t be.

@ivykaty44

He will lose face with his 'friends' those who have laundered money through the UK, who have their children in British boarding schools

At the same time it doesn't really hurt the ordinary Russians.

And Ukraine might just win.

Ukrainians are fighting for their own land and people, the older ones remember life in the USSR.

Ukraine is arming ordinary people, they are forming guerilla groups.

Lot of Russian soldiers are conscripts who do not want to be there and whose families don't want to be there.

youhadmeatjello · 27/02/2022 08:55

He’s either unhinged or he’s doing a very good job of acting like he is: possibly a good tactic. Make everyone think you’re mad enough to press the button

Can you speak Russian?

I’ve listen to the translation of speeches, nothing to different from U.K. and US leaders

ivykaty44 · 27/02/2022 08:58

Not really sure Putin is worried about losing face & that isn’t being hurt in any case

How is it going to hurt Putin
