Can someone help me understand the sanctions against Russia?

I’ve done a bit of reading and understand the Swift payment sanction and Germany with Nordstream.
What I don’t understand is the new wave of sanctions that seems to be specifically targeting the people - not allowing their children in western schools for example.
Removing property from Russians in the UK.

I understand the removal of assets from Putin’s so called oligarch friends - is the thinking there that they will force something to happen? Do they have that power?

I have to confess to feeling a certain amount of reassurance that the red button wouldn’t be pressed due to the amount of Russian interest in the UK, but it seems like we are removing a lot of it? And does much of it actually affect Putin himself or is it more about cutting Russia off as a whole and hoping some kind of action from within is taken (which seems unlikely to me?)?

If you’re accusing me of being a troll @LilyRed I can assure you I’m not. I’m genuinely trying to understand so I can be better informed and hopefully feel less anxious about the situation.

I think putin might be on corticosteroids as part of his medical treatment. These can have the side effects of agitation and aggression. He's also put on a lot of weight and has a round, bloated face now, again, this can be a side effect of steroids.

What a bunch of cowards the West have turned out to be.

What would you suggest as an alternative? If we put boots on the ground in Ukraine, World War 3 is immediately triggered. It is desperately awful for Ukraine but Western leaders also have a duty to their own people to try to avoid retaliation from Putin. So arming Ukraine as much as possible, offering refuge to those fleeing and turning the screw with sanctions is an approach I agree with for now. Like a PP I keep hoping for some sort of internal coup from within Russia and an overthrowing of Putin from within.

Putin wants Ukraine back under Russian power and will use any type of propaganda to get there. The country has enormous resources

Putin is incredibly dangerous but has plotted and planned to get to where he is - whether he is actually ill with madness? doubtful, more likely the pressure of what he is doing.

Good point Barrow, I was wondering just this earlier looking at news reports - and that long tables today with the two generals sat at the other end, all part of his infection contamination paranoia - the consensus has been he has cancer, yes - or any or the long table/distancing from others for example his parliament in that huge room.
