Fresh hell of world book day without characters

So apparently it's a thing now to dress up as an object, but not a character for world book day. Thank you America. The supermarkets are no help as they only have characters in their fancy dress. Son (Y1) wants to go as a trampoline. So that's great. Any ideas? It needs to be easy as I'm beyond crap at craft/sewing, he'll need to be able to do lessons in it, needs to survive playtime, the rain and toilet trips. Google is no help as it just suggests what someone should wear for a costume party to go trampolining/what to wear to a trampoline park. Oh and I stupidly thought I had until Wednesday as didn't note the date had changed to Monday. Feel like I've spent more time than I want to on this already and I've achieved exactly nothing!

Ah but trampolines were invented in America so it’s their fault anyway*

  • I made this up
BeenToldComputerSaysNo · 26/02/2022 20:30

Maybe it's not American, but when I googled for ideas, the word/vocab day ones were from America, so I assumed. Lab technician for science week?

Our school have to dress as a powerful word! What's wrong with a standard Book character costume??? Not impressed.

Mind you the class parents have decided that 'Superhero' is a powerful word... And other standard costumes can be used along the same lines.

Dressing up as “Science” ….
Get a fabric pen or crayons and on any plain tee shirt write a pithy comment eg “get lost” or “not me” etc etc…
When asked what you are…
You are a retort!

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 26/02/2022 20:34

Sainsburys have a golden ticket outfit.

Thewishingchair123 · 26/02/2022 20:46

How about a trampoline hat? A typical Easter hat (available widely now eg in hone bargains) - and then add some painted wooden skewers/plastic sticks and a bit of netting (from a garden centre) ..and bobs your uncle

Attach slinkies to the bottom of an old jumper as they look like springs. Everyone on here needs to join Parents Against School Dress Up Days on fb. Solidarity.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 26/02/2022 20:48

Could he go as a shop manikin?

He can just stand around all day, ignoring the teachers.

Lulu1919 · 26/02/2022 20:53

Trust me most teachers I know hate it too !!,
I'm going as Laura Ingalls Wilder ...Little House on the Prairie author and character
Old gingham dress
Mop cap
Big black boots
Book tied up with string lol

Theunamedcat · 26/02/2022 20:58

We had a word parade one year my son has sen and extreme difficulties with non school uniform days his word was noncompliant because he refused to not wear school shoes and school socks and the bloody wrangling I did to get him into jogging bottoms was ridiculous 🙄

Willowowisp · 26/02/2022 21:00

This is so mad. Poor you. The best book character I did was Percy Jackson. He literally wore jeans and t shirt and I selotaped paper wings to his trainers. It is a complete nightmare!

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 26/02/2022 21:01

Dear god, isn't it time parents boycotted this nonsense?

Just say you're not doing it. Stage a rebellion.

Liveandkicking · 26/02/2022 21:02

@Aworldofmyown

This year, we are dressing up as vocabulary. We are being punished for something 🤦‍♀️
Good Lord no! Thankfully our school are pretty chill. Mine are wearing costumes we already have and I bought cheap books that match to go with them. I can’t afford new outfits every time and work too many hours to be crafting away!
thirdistheonewiththehairychest · 26/02/2022 21:02

Put one of those pointy party hats on him and...VOILA...he's a pencil. A pencil used by an author. To write a book.

This is definitely crafting. Run away!

Nosetickle · 26/02/2022 21:04

World book day is on Thursday isn’t it? Almost had a heart attack when you said Monday and had to double check!

Has the school said they have to dress as objects and not characters or is it just that your son wants to? Tell him he can’t? That’s nuts.

rainbowzebra05 · 26/02/2022 21:05

Stick a hoola hoop round his middle, braces to hold it up and dress him in white with a cross for the bouncy bit. He can take the hoop off easily for practical stuff, but still gets to be a trampoline in spirit.

killerofhouseplants · 26/02/2022 21:06

Teach him how to make a boooooiiiing noise with a ruler on the edge of a desk. He can then go as the sound of a trampoline (lazy and rubbish solution!)

frugalkitty · 26/02/2022 21:11

Rainbow beat me to it, but I was going to say a hula hoop with braces, maybe some netting round? So glad my three are teens now and this nonsense is behind us!

Thewishingchair123 · 26/02/2022 21:13

@Liveandkicking Grin yeah you’re right..Grin

Us to. The word we have chosen is discombobulate
Franklyfrost · 26/02/2022 21:19

One of mine has to dress up as an adjective this year. I think school has done this because all the parents have banned books with mythical creatures, shape shifting and historical costumes in the hope of an easier morning on March 3rd.

This is the BEST solution!

@mumofEandE

Tell him he blew away last week in the storm!
🤣🤣🤣
YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 26/02/2022 21:22

Why are you blaming America???
We have never had a "World Book Day" where I live and never heard of it anywhere else here either. Guess it's just fun to blame America for everything. Sorry, this one in on the UK.
