Fresh hell of world book day without characters

So apparently it's a thing now to dress up as an object, but not a character for world book day. Thank you America. The supermarkets are no help as they only have characters in their fancy dress. Son (Y1) wants to go as a trampoline. So that's great. Any ideas? It needs to be easy as I'm beyond crap at craft/sewing, he'll need to be able to do lessons in it, needs to survive playtime, the rain and toilet trips. Google is no help as it just suggests what someone should wear for a costume party to go trampolining/what to wear to a trampoline park. Oh and I stupidly thought I had until Wednesday as didn't note the date had changed to Monday. Feel like I've spent more time than I want to on this already and I've achieved exactly nothing!

Dress him as a wardrobe and add lion and witch heads.

AutomaticMoon · 26/02/2022 21:25

OoOo if you have a square box, you could make it into a Rubik Cube costume 😃

AutomaticMoon · 26/02/2022 21:25

Or a flattish box could be transformed into a book costume!

Cardboard circle with arm straps-paint it & stick those pipe things through it, (forgotten the name!) for legs & a ping pong net or garden mesh round it for a safety net

Stick boy costume. Not sure whether a stick boy counts as an inanimate object but I thought it looks funny and also easy to make:

Tell him he blew away last week in the storm!

Op can you buy some netting from a fabric shop & then stick/see it to his t shirt?

We had a Shakespearean theme a couple of years ago. At least that was related

Punkypinky · 26/02/2022 21:40

OP I have no dress up advice but I really sympathise I HATE dress up days and LOATHE crafting to the depth of my soul. It's not fun it's awful but you don't want your kid to feel left out so you do it. It's like schools assume we're all just sat at home waiting for them to give us some stupid project to fill our time...

Oh actually for those poor souls dressing their children as words choose "pointless" and cover them in broken pencils. Or a pic of Alexander Armstrong.

caranations · 26/02/2022 21:57

@CarrotCakeMuffins

Our school have to dress as a powerful word! What's wrong with a standard Book character costume??? Not impressed.

Mind you the class parents have decided that 'Superhero' is a powerful word... And other standard costumes can be used along the same lines.

A powerful word? Easy-peasy. One white t-shirt and a sharpie is all that's required. Emblazon the t-shirt with the word:

NO

Aworldofmyown · 26/02/2022 22:00

It seems like the schools had a round Robin to 'have fun' with parents this year 😆

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/02/2022 22:33

Oh god, Thankyou, OP! I completely forgot about sorting a costume so have just ordered one. It’s due to arrive on Wed so if it’s delayed I’ll be back in a panic for more ideas.

BeenToldComputerSaysNo · 26/02/2022 23:21

I have a hula hoop! I've also had a couple of glasses of wine, so less bothered now. The powerful/superhero post made me laugh and also think whether I could come up with a word for one of son's existing costumes.

@YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer

Why are you blaming America??? We have never had a "World Book Day" where I live and never heard of it anywhere else here either. Guess it's just fun to blame America for everything. Sorry, this one in on the UK.
A dozen years of school in the US and Canada and we've never heard of it either except on MN threads.
labyrinthlaziness · 27/02/2022 05:43

Parents need to push back agianst this nonsense.

Ask the teacher to tell you what to do and how to do it for under £5.

Although the vocab one is better - you can be 'relaxed' or 'comfortable' in track suit bottoms.

Kanaloa · 27/02/2022 06:16

I know I’m a killjoy around these things but what a phenomenal waste of time. I mean what is he getting out of dressing as a trampoline? Has he got a favourite book featuring the trampoline? If not then what has it got to do with literacy??

The last school I worked in (in my rather deprived area) did a book swap for world book day where children could bring their favourite books to share with each other. Teacher had a stack of extras for children who hadn’t brought one to swap. Makes a hell of a lot more sense to me if the goal is to promote reading, compared with dressing as a trampoline.

WhatNoRaisins · 27/02/2022 07:07

I think parents need to start keeping their kids off school on these stupid dress up days and hit them where it hurts.

You can't do this in England.

What I used to do was send them in non-uniform and email school to say I wasn't engaging.

JenniferBarkley · 27/02/2022 07:37

Hmm. I hadn't realised it was this week. Wondering if our school just isn't doing it or if we're going to be told on Monday in the March newsletter.

In February we've already had Frozen Day (wtaf) and wear something red or pink for valentine's. On Monday to celebrate the end of Get Fit February we have to send them in "a tracksuit, leggings or sportswear". It's a nursery school. Their uniform is a tracksuit. Confused

CrackerGal · 27/02/2022 07:51

Dress him as a gymnast?
Complete with water bottle?
I've seen it as a thing to Dress up as a hot dog or crayon but not this before!
Great imagination, good luck?

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/02/2022 08:03

@Aworldofmyown

This year, we are dressing up as vocabulary. We are being punished for something 🤦‍♀️
What about an FCUK t-shirt?
LadyCatStark · 27/02/2022 08:22

At least it’s an actually bloody thing. DS once had to dress up as an adjective 🙄. Could you fashion something using a hula hoop?

5thnonblonde · 27/02/2022 08:39

Make him a placard to carry that says ‘I (am an) OBJECT’
