Are you taking any steps because of the Ukraine situation?

The situation for those in the country is heartbreaking, I've sobbed at several news stories this morning and my heart aches for a Ukrainian friend whose family is still there.

On a far more selfish, practical level have you "done" anything to protect yourself and your own situation? If nothing else I can see an impending deepening of the financial crisis. A friend has taken all her money out of the bank, for example, but it's true she's prone to a bit of drama. Gas supply worries me a lot.

Is there anything we should be doing now to help a bit if the situation is prolonged or worsens?

I've ordered 5 tons of horse manure, tomorrow I'm going to get a couple of bags of compost and a big tub of poultry poo.

Not panic buying just my normal start of the season purchases! However I do have a pitchfork if I need it!

PilatesPeach · 25/02/2022 17:51

I am carrying on as normal and counting my blessings

Cash is useless in a total war situation. Appears no one has any idea what it’s really like.

AbsentmindedWoman · 25/02/2022 17:55

@Sparklingbrook

I've just checked the cash situation in the house. I've £2.92 in my purse and DS2 says he has a fiver and about 20 Euros he brought back from his last holiday. I think we're all set.
Your £2.92 should cover bread and milk if card payments are not an option for 48 hours. Sorted.

Not everyone eats bread/ needs milk for tea I know, but you get the point.

Small roadbumps of chaos are much more likely as a first hurdle that anyone would be dealing with. And yes cash would be useful in a lot of situations.

Whether that is the sum total of any inconvenience, or whether they are a precursor to a bigger shittier situation, is anybody's guess.

I have a WW2 issue petrol ration book from late DM which might come in handy

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 25/02/2022 18:00

@ItsLisaLou

I’ve sold all my belongings and moved to an underground cave with my cats, nothing extreme
I'm impressed at your generator set up and the strength of the router or signal booster you've installed.

Did you annex another cave to store the fuel for the generator or is the cave in a sunny area where solar panels are sufficient for all your fuel needs and for a solar oven?

Knockdown42 · 25/02/2022 18:00

Legitimately... I’m getting my DCs passports sorted. We’re all dual citizens of NZ/Aus and the UK but can’t travel w/o the passports. It’s not just this, we want to take him o/s on holiday, but it’s pushed us to get it done as options don’t harm anyone

cheddez · 25/02/2022 18:03

People think in such BLACK AND WHITE terms. It is ridiculous because it's not a case of hellfire and being reduced to dust, OR life completely normal. There is a whole middle ground.

@AbsentmindedWoman in the context of the OP ie the Ukraine situation what would be the middle ground scenarios?

EmpressCixi · 25/02/2022 18:03

@AbsentmindedWoman
Nope. Your computer issue in Aldi not taking MasterCard is not relevant to whether cash is useful in a total war situation. Things quickly devolve into bartering systems.

Now, I grant that if you’re a refugee and get to safe country, only then would cash be useful IF you can avoid being robbed by human traffickers and IF you can convert to new country currency.

But if you are trapped in an occupied country, cash is useless and makes you a target.

cheddez · 25/02/2022 18:06

@Tilltheend99 where would you pack & go to though?

cheddez · 25/02/2022 18:07

My rationale was Ukraine is known as the bread basket of Europe as that's where a significant amount of wheat is grown.

I'm struggling to go low carb at the moment so thought this would mean i'm forced too

RobertaFirmino · 25/02/2022 18:10

The only thing I've done is got my old electric boiling ring out of the shed and tested it to see if it still works. Just in case there's an interruption to the gas supply and I can't use the hob. I'd probably be wise to get £100 out of the bank too.

Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2022 18:11

If card payments weren't an option for 48 hours I'd just eat or drink what we had in the house I think my £2.92 would be safe. Grin

WutheringHeights66 · 25/02/2022 18:13

Morrison's was very low on bog roll today, I suspect the panic loo roll buyers are at it again. I couldn't even get four rolls of Shea Butter and had to resort to unscented toilet of the expensive brand.

Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2022 18:15

There were 2 boxes of tissues left in Boots earlier. I think there were supply issues anyway but I think seeing empty shelves makes people want to buy anything that remains on them.

Cappuccino17 · 25/02/2022 18:16

Didn't think we had to do anything...? Praying for the Ukrainian folk. Very sad situation.

SamWidges · 25/02/2022 18:18

Just been looking at the news at so many Ukrainian people giving blood to support their fight against the Russian invasion. How about we think about that kind of thing.

Ariadneslostthread · 25/02/2022 18:18

In all honesty, if NATO becomes involved in Putins stupidity, then I think we should be worrying about where our nearest bomb shelter is …..

This. This is how ridiculous it is.

If the banks collapse so does the economy. Cash won’t be worth the paper it’s written on.

All we can do is not bloody panic. Don’t bulk buy petrol or toilet paper or tins. All that will do is drive up price and demand.

Carry on as normal.

@USaYwHatNow

Yes we're getting our finances in order, making sure my husband's will is up to date, making sure we have all the documents needed for our remortgage in a couple of months and that our savings are moved into my name. However, this is because he is being deployed to Estonia. If he weren't military we would be doing nothing differently
You're being very sensible! But I really hope it's over cautious! Lots of live & strength to you both!
HenceThus · 25/02/2022 18:22

Oh not the TP wars again!!! I can't face it. People are weird. I mean if Putin nukes us, what use is a pile of loo paper, seriously Confused

Tigersonvaseline · 25/02/2022 18:23

Nationwide had lots of problems before Xmas And after Xmas.

Wages, payments couldn't Go in And out.
My wages were not paid in which meant my ocado order payment couldn't be made thankfully after I had the food.

However many people were left totally screwed right before Xmas!!

I've had lost, stopped cards before so now I have different bank accounts I'd never rely on one again And always try if possible to have cash to hand.

cheddez · 25/02/2022 18:26

@Tigersonvaseline but that's not a war situation

User5rh · 25/02/2022 18:27

DH and I have 3 different bank accounts between us and 5 different credit cards, best to spread the risk in case one or two go down.
