Pissed watching the Royle Family

It's my first day off work in 11 days so I'm on my arse on the sofa.

In my sloth lying about im watching the Royle Family, the wedding episode.

Ah, it's making me daft and sentimental. I've had a few merlots.

Denise is in the house with Jim waiting to leave. I know it's a daft show but I get a bit teary at it.

OP posts:

Nana was the best. 'Can't she eat wafer thin ham, Barbara?' when told that someone is a vegetarian.

And yes, The Queen of Sheba episode was the peak. The scene where Barbara is doing her mum's hair is so bloody moving.

Agree that the last few Christmas specials were poor.

MintyGreenDream · 24/02/2022 22:14

One of the best TV shows ever imo

PurpleHollyhocks · 24/02/2022 22:19

I loved it right to the end . My favourite episode is when Anthony’s girlfriends parents come over at Christmas

Love The Royle Family, it is pure genius. I remember watching the episode when Denise tells Barbara she's pregnant. My Sister was newly pregnant and our Mum had died six months before so I proper cried. Alo the Queen of Sheba episode. So many funny moments in every episode.

KeeG8181 · 25/02/2022 02:48

I love this programme. It's like a safe space and brings me so much nostalgia, then I end up crying cos it reminds me of my own family, and just like the royles some of them aren't here anymore. Such a great show

Nat6999 · 25/02/2022 03:09

I cry when Jim is sat on the bathroom floor with Denise & she thinks she will not be a good mum. It was a brilliantly written show, Caroline Ahern & Craig Cash were brilliant writers.

@nancybotwinbloom

If your a crier like me op you should watch afterlife if you haven't already. Has you laughing and crying in equal amounts.
Not a patch on the Royle Family, or even Derek.
Tempnamelady · 25/02/2022 05:31

Someone mentioned early doors upthread- utter comedy genius .

Flidina · 25/02/2022 06:52

Love the Royle family, watch it every year, reminds me of happier times in my life, very nostalgic

balalake · 25/02/2022 07:03

Sue Johnston is one of the most underrated actresses of her generation and the Royle Family shows how excellent she is.

I watched them all recently too. It was so much like my family growing up and my family are all gone now. I miss them all so much when I watch it yet it's comforting at the same time.

Brilliant writing and acting.

That was just brilliant, whenever I hear that I think of them stripping the paper off.

Fantastic writers, characters and actors.

The Queen of Sheba was just beautiful.

One of my favourites was watching the Antiques Roadshow. My nana would do exactly as Nana did and claim she had 12 of every item in the back room 😂

Quirrelsotherface · 25/02/2022 07:44

I believed in every character and every word.

Loved the Queen of Sheba too and the episode where Joe the neighbours wife had died and Anthony's girlfriend is pregnant. Both incredibly touching and made me howl laughing (Mary's in the Dyson). It was genius

Every time I hear the signature time for The One Show it reminds me of the episode where they go and stay in a caravan.

I was really moved by this episode too. The only thing that disappointed me a bit about the whole series was that they did this beautiful episode then Denise was actually an awful mother!!
MintyGreenDream · 25/02/2022 09:57

And poor Cheryl and her continuous dieting.I think she looked great I think that's the only part that hasn't aged well.

Norgie · 25/02/2022 11:03

I love The Royle Family, I have all the episodes on DVD for when I fancy a really good giggle. However many times I watch it, it never fails to make me laugh.
Yes to when Barbara is brushing Nana's hair bringing a tear or two, and when she died to Sineads Scarlet Ribbons, I was full on howling. Even my ruffty tuffty DH was muttering about the dusty lounge.
Caroline Aherne was a very talented writer.

CatrinVennastin · 25/02/2022 12:44

@MaChienEstUnDick OMG Roy sat on the sofa all by himself. Both me and DH were in bits. I thought it was beautifully done and a fitting tribute.

ThatsNotMyGolem · 25/02/2022 15:37

@Clawdy

I loved the Royles, but wish they had ended it after Queen of Sheba. The last few Christmas specials were dire. The characters, particularly Denise and husband, had become silly caricatures.

This always happens with successful comedy.

I was always glad The Office ended after two series and the Xmas special. Until Gervais started beating a dead horse by reviving Brent.

Same for Friday Night Dinner and Stath Let's Flats. Neither needed their most recent series. When characters become popular, the writers always end up exaggerating their appealing/amusing traits and it becomes too much.

PollyCreo · 25/02/2022 17:12

There's a brilliant line in the wedding episode where Denise asks Cheryl about blusher. Can't remember it exactly but Cheryl advises 'you can never have enough blusher' Grin

In the christening episode there's a great scene in the kitchen where one of Denise's enemies is bitching. Denise says 'come on Cheryl' and they both flounce out of the kitchen.

mrsnw · 25/02/2022 17:46

Love love love it!
So many things we repeat daily stems from the show
My arse!
We still march around to the antiques road show theme tune.
Put kettle on. Oh you're sooooo lazy!
Still sing oneeee oneeee oneeeee oh yeahhh!
Have you had your tea? What did you have? Spaghetti
Bolognaise
No hoops
Oh I could go on. The 1990s. I miss them!

Juno22 · 25/02/2022 17:49

Apart from the episodes talked about like Queen of Sheba and when Mary died, one of my favourite moments was when the family gave Jim a Sky Tv subscription for Christmas. Their delight at giving him the envelope and his reaction was priceless.
