Anyone finding the tone of this really quite terrifying...

I’m not one to get myself in a tizz over sensationalised news but this is starting to feel very different!

@jgw1 Oh gosh you should never believe singaporean men when they talk about NS. They tend to exaggerate!

Yes they say they spent all their time slacking in the corner drinking tea, but they didn't mention their 3 months of basic military training that they went through where they accidentally broke their leg. 'Accidentally' hmmm. Basic military training is combat based. the assumption of the singapore armed forces is that every man should be in combat based roles unless they have medical problems or are posted to the police or other units.

And yes rich kids are more likely to attempt ' accidents' cos army is a big jump from being waited on by maids all day. Also having money for medical specialists helps.I have israeli relatives and it is a lot easier to dodge military service in Israel than in Singapore. In Singapore, you can avoid combat if you try and get yourself injured or hope that the army believes you are truly allergic to the sun and the grass or you truly have a heart murmur, but if you ask me, neither are fail safe solutions.

Pushkin Square - God bless those brave Russians.

They may exaggerate, but that they can send me emails and so on even during basic training, makes it very different from UK basic military training.

Pushkin square!
Bless them, we are with you!

The images of the people in Pushkin Square have made me feel quite emotional. So incredibly brave.

I feel for the people of Russia tonight as well as the people of the Ukraine. None of them deserve this war.

Putin is not an intelligent man, he is lots of things a great manipulator, strategist possibly but intelligence is not his strong point. He is on the lower end of the IQ spectrum and has limited ideas outside of his own sphere.
You can't be a great manipulator and strategist without being intelligent. I'm not saying he's a genius but he is not stupid. He knows what he is doing and has a plan.

onlychildhamster · 24/02/2022 19:20

@jgw1 It is probably less intense on the whole than the British army where recruits choose to be there. Basic military training in Singapore is designed for the masses- everyone from the super fit guy on a military scholarship who is aiming to be a general in future to the guy who would sooner gnaw off his own leg than go on a route march.

I got lots of phone calls from my boyfriend at that time. There are only over 3 million Singaporeans so of course it is not viable for Singapore to have a decent professional army with such a small population size. Having a conscripted army means that you don't devote so much of your most important resource (your people) to defense while still ensuring that you have a pool of men to call on in the unhappy event your country needs defending.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine shows that Europe is not safe from attack and unlike in WW2, we can no longer rely on America's deep pockets and we no longer have an Empire where we can get people to die for our wars. Like Singapore, Uk can only rely on herself. Thankfully, we are quite a far way off from Russia and we are a member of NATO but we still should not underestimate Putin or take our freedom for granted.

It’s at moments like this that I find myself in awe of the everyday people. The Ukrainians but also the brave Russian people standing up to Putin

‘Boris will address the nation’

Book early. More pearls of wisdom🙄

Isn’t the Tory party funded by the Russians?

Yup

Fucking war mongering men! Angry

Covidworries · 24/02/2022 19:51

@apolloanddaphne

I think posters bringing up covid are doing so because of the irony. I have been read so many times on covid threads that it is tough for those negatively impacted by covid because they are CEV or suffering long covid. I persoanlly was told on several occasions that children CEV like mine can get stuffed and dont matter providing their child can continue to go to school while covid positive and they dont have to wear a face nappy.
So to now have people crying out about the lives of those in Ukraine being so important is ironic.
I do feel much empathy for them, it is an awful situation but to borrow a phrase from covid boards its impacting a low %, most people aren't currently at risk from this at this time.

Am i concerned - of course no one knows which way this could go, but equally no one knew what impact new variant of covid would have, or how thier loved ones would be impacted. Am i currently at personal risk - no - hopefully we will stay low risk and deaths or Ukraine and Russian people will stay very very low.

Yes I have been listening to some talk on another chat board about how "real men" will be needed

It is all such a tragic waste. I stood in the mass graveyards at Ypres etc and realised that apart from the individual tragedies, the other tragedy is it will keep happening, and it's unnecessary.

Is that because Boris' position is paid for by Putin's mates?
MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 24/02/2022 20:01

Boris is up to his titties in Russian money. Yeah, babes, he'll show them who's boss.

jgw1 · 24/02/2022 20:01

We should welcome such comments as an opportunity to educated people about which British political party receives money from those linked to the Putin regime.

Wonnle · 24/02/2022 20:03

I wouldn't trust Boris to address an envelope properly myself
