Hurrah! The return of Imperial Units!

The government has announced a taxpayer-funded study to quantify the economic benefits of a return to imperial units - a definite Brexit benefit.

I'm struggling to think of any. Journeys are all in miles. You can still buy a pint. No one has arrested me for my standard cake recipe of 8,8,8,4. What are the good old imperial units I'm forgetting that are currently verboten and what economic benefit will they bring? Are people desperate to buy a pound of apples but holding off while they're in kg?

"Paul Scully, a Tory business minister, said reintroducing imperial labelling would be “an important step in taking back control” and that a planned “assessment of the economic impact on business will be carried out in due course”."

Who cares. What really matters is to get the weather forecast to start giving temperatures in degrees Fahrenheit! (I just can't tell in degrees Celcius - is 22C hot or cold?)
OTOH is 60 F cold, ok or hot....
Fizbosshoes · 23/02/2022 21:25

I've no idea about Fahrenheit, or liquid measures apart from pints!

Thing is, the fuckwits who voted for Brexit will be delighted by this and the Tories know their audience.

How ridiculous. The vast majority of the world uses the metric system. I’m in my 50s, I’ve only ever used metric. This isn’t a Brexit thing. It’s a grey votes thing
Yup. I'm in my 50s too. I'd hate to go backwards. The metric system is so much easier. What next? Stopping women from having credit cards and mortgages? Only letting white men vote? Closing shops on Sundays?
borntobequiet · 23/02/2022 21:34

A few decades ago I made a class cry by asking them to do “Mr Scrooge’s Christmas Sums” in Imperial measurements and £.s.d.
In my defence I was a newish and over-enthusiastic teacher, and I thought they’d find it an interesting and challenging Christmas fun maths lesson. If that was you, a belated “sorry”.
More recently I discovered that many people think miles are metric measurements because the word begins with m.

Oh god please no. It's just too too mad.

I know that 32 is, nonsensically, freezing. 0, despite in any sensible scale being a tipping point, is 'somewhere below freezing.' 100 is Really Quite Hot, and 104 is hot enough that if you're a teenage babysitter you should call an ambulance if that's the temperature of the bratty 4 year old you're looking after.

Anything in between is 'god knows what'.

@veevee04

Sounds like a load of shit I never learnt imperial measurements and I left school 13 years ago. Pandering to the grey vote.
I’m grey and don’t do imperial. Mind you I’d never vote Tory either.

Shh. You'll give them ideas.

I would be interested to hear some people who want to see a return to Imperial discuss the advantages they see.

Rees Mogg has commissioned a study. Will it be like the Boris bridge to Northern Ireland?

Orpheline · 23/02/2022 21:37

Being old, I've always been grateful for TV measurements, obviously aimed at the the US market.

ThirdElephant · 23/02/2022 21:38

@Westfacing

Please tell me this is fake news! It's quite indicative of the whole sorry Brexit show.

Warm beer, Imperial units, thwack of leather on willow, Vesta curry...

Not fake news, sadly. Just Googled it. I also learned that there are 256 drachms to the pound, according to The London Economic.

WTF is a drachm? How is that even pronounced?

ZenNudist · 23/02/2022 21:40

Someone should hand this oxygen theif a P45. He's a disgrace.

ZenNudist · 23/02/2022 21:40

Thief!

noblegiraffe · 23/02/2022 21:41

I assume one of the economic benefits would be the jobs created to create 'explaining imperial units' pamphlets.

What an infantile comment.

Once they realise petrol costs so much more per gallon than per litre, they'll scrap the idea.

No its not, its true and the Govt looking to return to imperial proves it.

No rational thinking person can think this is a good use of Govt time esp considering the challenges we face currently.

Kendodd · 23/02/2022 21:49

Who do you think this idea is aimed at then?

cakeorwine · 23/02/2022 21:50

So it's £1.50 per litre so that must be about £7 per gallon.

Quite a lot....

Kendodd · 23/02/2022 21:51

Sorry, that question was @Sacada

There is a cool Matt Parker video explaing imperial measurements to the "metrics".
