Hurrah! The return of Imperial Units!

noblegiraffe · 23/02/2022 16:27

The government has announced a taxpayer-funded study to quantify the economic benefits of a return to imperial units - a definite Brexit benefit.

I'm struggling to think of any. Journeys are all in miles. You can still buy a pint. No one has arrested me for my standard cake recipe of 8,8,8,4. What are the good old imperial units I'm forgetting that are currently verboten and what economic benefit will they bring? Are people desperate to buy a pound of apples but holding off while they're in kg?

"Paul Scully, a Tory business minister, said reintroducing imperial labelling would be “an important step in taking back control” and that a planned “assessment of the economic impact on business will be carried out in due course”."

So much stuff is still in inches to suit the Americans. Like tv.
But they are not clever enough to weigh ingredients for cooking. They use volume:- Cups
Many people cook in Imp because cookbooks last a long time. I have a Delia with Imp and metric in Brackets.

sofato5miles · 23/02/2022 17:21

I am british and use metric for height and weight. But then i lived abroad for a while and that is what most other coutries use. It's easier. In fact i find the whole stones/ stone thing mildly irritating now

There are plenty out there with two holes and lots of two tap sets there for you freezing/scalding enthusiasts - lots at B&Q recently when I was looking for a new kitchen tap...

thank you @JassyRadlett but i meant the good sinks. B and Q don't do a good weighted stainless steel nor do TP. The one you posted is the cheap one.

I meant generally across the board. Everything seems to still be designed towards the poorer European standards.

But thank you for the tip though Smile

Aye, we'll, you're probably a victim of the market rather than conspiracy there. Most folk don't want them, therefore they don't get made.

Unless you can get them bespoke drilled?

Donotgogentle · 23/02/2022 17:25

I wonder whether the real reason is a market protection measure by stealth. Eg. If procurement specifications move to imperial it might be harder for EU businesses to compete with British businesses? Dunno.

But clearly a cake is 8 8 8 4.

JassyRadlett · 23/02/2022 17:26

(I'm not taking the bait on 'poorer European standards' 😂)

MoodySky · 23/02/2022 17:26

FFS - I learned metric at school almost 50 years ago! I know fuck all about ounces/furlongs etc.

I hate this fucking government.

Daisymaybe60 · 23/02/2022 17:26

@noblegiraffe

Surely even the 'grey vote' have got their head around grams and litres by now?

So what are the benefits of them being able to switch back? Nostalgia?

I was in the last cohort to do our O-level Maths in imperial units, 1970. We were so relieved to find we wouldn't have to do all that complicated decimal calculation. Grin

I must admit I still use imperial weights for baking, and miles, feet and inches are more natural to me even now than metric measurements. I still think of temperatures in the Fahrenheit scale as well. and buy quarters of sweets and pounds of apples. Nobody's threatened to arrest me for it yet.

Funnily enough though, I can cope with grams and litres as well. And the only time all that quaint pole, chain, rod, ell, £sd knowledge comes in is in an occasional pub quiz. And when the question comes I've usually forgotten the answer.

Pandering to the grey vote?. Nah, I doubt any of us want to go back. We can do without all that hassle at our time of life.

Ablababla · 23/02/2022 17:27

Is this another Rees-Mogg thing? They seem to have given him his dream job. Minister of making the darkest imaginings of the Daily Mail come true.

QuirkyTurtle · 23/02/2022 17:27

@Whelmed

I came from metric background but after nearly 20 years here I'm getting used to miles and inches and pounds. I wonder if they will be a requirement for the citizenship test?
LOL PLEASE no! I have to take my citizenship test in a few months and I'm already going to struggle as it is with the useless crap they want you to know.

Ha ha ha.....I can't believe anyone could say that in all seriousness. Jesus you'd think we had nothing more important to worry about. What a waste of time and public money.

I don’t understand kilometres. I still think in miles , pounds and inches. So it would help me.

thepetrellies · 23/02/2022 17:34

I'm off to my local supermarket to buy a hogshead of mead.

When you buy food, what do you look for in a 'weight' unit?

I guess they might do both. As they were always allowed to.

Make sure to register a noisy complaint about the state of oppression in which you're living if they don't have the exact product you want. Mutter about it being the fault of Europeans while you're there.
Shostaklovhich · 23/02/2022 17:43

If you’re struggling to think of any OP, then why is this a Brexit benefit? Looks like we were there with the imperial measurements already.

Curiousmouse · 23/02/2022 17:50

Ffs.

Bionicname · 23/02/2022 17:57

I wonder if they would be quite so keen if they were called “outdated European” measures rather than “Imperial”. It’s not like continental types never had “Fuß” or “Meile” or “Livres” for that matter. They only got rid of them sooner…

Roominmyhouse · 23/02/2022 18:02

What an absolute fucking waste of tax payers money.

reluctantbrit · 23/02/2022 18:09

@jamandmarmaladeoncrumpets

I as just in Germany for a week and again found it fascinating that every German shower I ever had has better water pressure than the ones I get here in the UK. It doesn’t matter how old the house is, my childhood home is the same age my house here is and I had better pressure.

Toilets - it’s designed to reduce water and most toilets here in the UK, which are decent modern, have the same logic that you can choose how much water you need for a flush. The issue is the old plumbing with pipes too small, too much stuff in them which can’t flush properly and I still remember the plumper opening up the wall behind our toilet and staring in amazement at a maze of pipes, causing so many turns, no wonder the wast stuck all the time.

Don’t blame European toilets.

jamandmarmaladeoncrumpets · 23/02/2022 18:20

But i waste more water flushing twice on a 2.6l flush and even the 6litre flushes than i did years ago on an 9 litre flush.

The paper just stays there. The pipes are far too narrow on newer toilets.

Having had 4 replacement Geberit cartridges fo flushes that do not work properly I do blame toilets made to Common Market standards.

The old British toilets and pipework worked very well.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 23/02/2022 18:20

FFS. Stuff like this makes me so glad that the kids and myself have Irish passports.

BertieBotts · 23/02/2022 18:53

Screens are still sold in inches in Germany.

TBH even if you told me a TV was 67cm long I wouldn't have a clue how wide that was IRL. I do know roughly how long that is, but it doesn't help me size up a TV. What I actually need to know is is it bigger or smaller than my current one, and will it look ridiculously big/small on the TV stand?

BobbinHood · 23/02/2022 18:55

I’m practically middle aged and I learned metric at school. I can’t imagine what possible economic benefit there could be to reintroducing imperial which has never gone away anyway.

mathanxiety · 23/02/2022 18:58

This is all part of the preparation for the UK to become the 51st state of the US.
