Claudia or Louisa

Where do I start… so I’ve had quite a hard birth and baby girl will be our last (which is probably why I’m feeling like I have to get her name right). We have spent a couple of weeks trying different names and none have felt quite right. I’ve changed my mind a couple of times and so has my husband. We’ve gone back and forth and the two that have felt the most natural are Claudia and Louisa (which would both be honouring family members). We like them both equally and will be sticking with them. I have even deleted the extensive list of baby names off my phone… I would be so grateful if I could get some feedback of which one do you all prefer the sound of please? We are looking for a name that is quite classic and won’t necessarily date. I think both fit that as neither has ever shot up to the top of the name charts.. all feedback very welcome ☺️

Olivia and Claudia go nicely together as sisters, I think it's because they are similarly structured with the "L" as the second letter as well as the "ia" ending. Olivia and Louisa also very pretty together and just as gorgeous, but I do think Claudia is a lovely equal "match" in tone to Olivia (even though we name children as individuals of course, not as a pair!)

Nosnogginginthekitchen · 21/02/2022 12:18

I prefer Claudia with the sound of the surname, but agree with others that you could use Louisa as a middle name with Marie and tick all the boxes at once!

Hen2018 · 21/02/2022 12:25

Louisa was my grandma, so I’d go for that.

In fact, my grandma was Louisa Maria!

Bluesheep8 · 21/02/2022 12:44

I think Louisa is the nicer of those two names.

Gosports · 21/02/2022 12:46

Definitely Louisa. Much prettier.

Normandy144 · 21/02/2022 12:46

I'm biased as I have an 8 year old Claudia and I absolutely love the name. It's never shot up the popularity charts and I have a theory that it is because people get out off by the meaning. That's fine by me as I couldn't give two hoots about it. Our Claudia gets shortened to Claude or Claudie occasionally but generally just stick to Claudia. We've had lots of compliments too.

x2boys · 21/02/2022 13:16

I think they are both lovely names
I think Louisa has a slight edge for me ,but both equally nice .

Sockpile · 21/02/2022 13:24

Louisa is one of my favourite names and would choose that over Claudia.

emuloc · 21/02/2022 13:26

Louisa. Lovely name.

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 21/02/2022 14:06

Louisa but I like the Luisa spelling (except Louisa is a more British spelling though)

@OddsNSodsBitsNBobs

Louisa but I like the Luisa spelling (except Louisa is a more British spelling though)
Oops accept not except 🙄😂
Imabitbusyatthemoment · 21/02/2022 14:10

I love Claudia. I think is gorgeous.

I also knew a lovely Louisa, which makes me like the name, but with a soft ‘s’ - is that how you would pronounce it?

ThreeRingCircus · 21/02/2022 14:12

Both pretty but Louisa edges it for me (and was on our list for DD2!)

Jayneisagirlsname · 21/02/2022 14:18

Both lovely names and I love the Cloud-ia pronunciation.
I have a Louisa so it's obviously my favourite! She's never yet become Lou and I'm hoping it'll stay that way.
If you decide to use both names, I think Claudia Louisa flows better than Louisa Claudia.

DramaAlpaca · 21/02/2022 14:22

@SageRosemary

I prefer Louisa

How about Louisa Marie Claudine?

How funny, I was just about to suggest exactly this!
caranations · 21/02/2022 14:22

On the whole I prefer Claudia, and it is probably less common than Louisa (which incidentally sounds horrible when pronounced with an Estuary accent).

CrackerGal · 21/02/2022 14:24

I like Claudia & you rarely hear it these days!

Casheeeew · 21/02/2022 14:26

Claudia x1000

SheAndHerAreWomen · 21/02/2022 14:28

I have a family member who is called Louisa. People who didn't know her used to her call her Louise though and it drove her bonkers! This was several years ago though when it was more or less unheard of. It's Claudia for me!

hollyivysaurus · 21/02/2022 14:46

Claudia is lovely!!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 21/02/2022 15:02

Louisa

Hariboqueen1 · 21/02/2022 15:07

Really dislike Claudia I dont know why. To me it doesnt seem very feminine? Like Claud or santa Claus. Its ok if its pronounced Cloud-ia but really dislike claw-dia

AnaMRT · 21/02/2022 19:42

@Swisscheeseleaves

Claudia Louise is beautiful!

I'm a bit biased as Claudia would have been my top choice girl's name if i had had a girl. All boys here though! Still a bit sad i didn't get to use it. Funnily enough i had twins and Olivia would have been the second twins name if they'd been girls. Grin we have very similar taste in names!

Wow we do have the same taste in names! DH slightly prefers Louisa and I very slightly prefer Claudia and I think I would regret not using it. Love the idea of having a Claudia Louisa Marie or Claudia Louise 😍

@GetYourEightYearOldOutOfATree

Louisa by miles for me, but where I live Claudias are generally 45-70 - it's in that spot between going out of fashion and coming back round again - like Elaine/Janice/Susan etc in the UK. Also the pronunciation differences (we are a bilingual family and when naming we tried our absolute best to minimise these) and tbh the meaning puts me off a little too. Louisa is very classic, very international, beautiful and unusual.
Wow that is interesting. Where are you based? The only thing I’m worried about with Louisa is if people would mistakingly call her Louise. With Claudia I like both ways of pronouncing it..
