I feel I’ve I’ve only just cottoned on to this in my 40s 🤦🏻‍♀️

It absolutely can be in some situations but I still stand by the fact that it doesn't get you absolutely everywhere, it just makes some situations easier. You still need to have intelligence and common sense to back it up.

caranations · 20/02/2022 11:01

Well... it helps if it is combined with brains. Someone might be lovely to look at, but people will soon get fed up if you are also a vacuous, vain airhead.

FionnulaTheCooler · 20/02/2022 11:03

Not necessarily, look at our Prime Minister. You'd be hard pressed to find a less beautiful human being and somehow he got into power.

Cam2020 · 20/02/2022 11:07

It can be, but it's very flawed. For a start, beauty is subjective and can bloom and fade very quickly.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 20/02/2022 11:09

Here

I wish I’d heard this when I was 20

No no you are confused! Beauty is truth:

'When old age shall this generation waste,
Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe
Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou say'st,
"Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know."'

Keats (Ode on a Grecian Urn)

Butteredtoast55 · 20/02/2022 11:12

Yes I do think it after many years on this planet.
It's not that being beautiful automatically means that you will have better choices and opportunities, but I really think it helps enormously and predisposes people to favour the beautiful.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 20/02/2022 11:49

Purr box how is it truth tho ?

Never really thought about buildings and architecture and why are some building made so beautiful if it wasn’t because of this

Church’s, town halls places you connect with power

TerraNovaTwo · 20/02/2022 11:53

No. Money is power.

Chestofdraws · 20/02/2022 11:54

No of course not, very few people In power would be classed as physically beautiful which is the proof that it’s not the case.

FindingMeno · 20/02/2022 11:56

Sadly yes.
Also money and connections.

swirlsy · 20/02/2022 11:56

Not sure, it's very subjective for one.

swirlsy · 20/02/2022 11:57

I think being attractive & healthy looking with a friendly disposition helps though.

SalsaLove · 20/02/2022 12:01

Beauty is power but it’s limited due to short duration and competition. The only true power is knowledge.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 20/02/2022 12:36

Even when your much older tho say in your 70s there will still be a bias towards the attractive 70 year olds then the less attractive 70 year olds
Like maybe you will get treated better in a care home in your 80s if your seen as more as attractive comparatively

OP posts:
KylieCharlene · 20/02/2022 12:39

Beauty opens many doors and affords greater opportunities.

CarrieErbag · 20/02/2022 12:39

@TerraNovaTwo

No. Money is power.
More than one thing can be powerful. Money obviously, but beauty too and also knowledge.
grapewine · 20/02/2022 12:42

Money is and with it the ability to garner knowledge and connections. Having said that, pretty privilege is a thing that exists.

MrsMingech · 20/02/2022 12:51

Beauty is power.

This has been proved by many studies. Even amongst children.

I can't be arsed to link articles. But they are published papers.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 20/02/2022 12:54

Youth and beauty are a powerful combination.

AmberLynn1536 · 20/02/2022 12:57

It can be beneficial to be beautiful, but there are downsides as well, particularly for women, some people assume you can’t be both intelligent and beautiful, you don’t necessarily get taken seriously at work particularly if you are young and some can be resentful of beautiful peoples looks. I think being slim and attractive (rather than beautiful) is the sweet spot, true beauty unless you live in celeb or millionaire land could be more challenging.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/02/2022 13:38

It's certainly isn't true for men, and as they still hold a vastly disproportionate amount of power, then overall no.

Not sure it's true for women in terms of real power either. The most powerful woman in recent times was probably Angela Merkel.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/02/2022 13:40

@PurrBox

That's poetry. It may be beautiful words but that does not actually make it true.
