So trying to make my work afternoon go quicker and listen to some music, so up pops the band Garbage from the 90's, how could I forget how bloody brilliant they were especially Stupid Girl! Anyone agree?

Me too, @HippyChickMama. Feel so emotional about it, as though I knew him.

RJnomore1 · 22/02/2022 21:55

Oh no. I hadn’t heard about mark. I loved his stuff with Isobel campbell too (we haven’t touched the Glasgow 90s scene have we? Belle and Sebastian, Arab strap, thrum, whiteout, the gyres, the supernaturals, teenage fan club, the pastels, it goes on and on…)

@Lifeisbeautiful01

Love this thread! Never prouder than when my daughters are blasting out ‘Ladykiller’ by Lush and know all the words! I’ll never understand why there aren’t indie discos for the over 45s in every town. There would be wall to wall old farts on the dance floor, all channelling their inner Brett!
I just played this off the back of this thread and haven’t heard it in years - what a track!! Thank you

I'm heartbroken over Mark Lanegan. I was a massive fan.

Everything he overcame, and it sounds like Covid got him.

Everything he overcame, and it sounds like Covid got him.

I'm just still a bit stunned by it. He'd come through so much and was living a calm and sober life. I think you're right, and it was the after effects of his horrific bout of covid.

Argh, love his voice so much. Gutted.

ItWasARayGun · 23/02/2022 10:29

It's really got me. His music is going round and round in my head and I keep crying.

PangoPurrl · 23/02/2022 10:33

I'm literally sat here crying over Mark Lanegan, was never a 'Screaming Trees' fan but loved pretty much everything else. I read 'sing backwards and weep' twice last year and felt like I knew him from being so obsessed with it, and his last album. I am currently halfway through his covid memoir. Sorry, a bit dark on an otherwise happy thread, I'm genuinely sitting here in shock.

ItWasARayGun · 23/02/2022 11:10

I got Sing Backwards and Weep for Christmas but haven't started it yet. I think I'll find it hard to actually pick it up now.

I think what I'm finding hardest is when a huge celebrity is lost there's a public and collective grief. When it's someone like Mark who wasn't mainstream most people are oblivious. I'm so, so upset but feel totally alone with it.

MenopauseSucks · 23/02/2022 11:17

Mostly Feet First at the Camden Palace as I lived in Camden & Kentish Town as a student & could stagger home afterwards!
Plus if you got in before 10pm it was free, there was always a band, so it was a pretty cheap night out for a student.
I remember seeing a very early performance of Suede & Brett Anderson kept waving the microphone stand around & generally being a bit of a prick.
A bloke nearby then muttered 'if he doesn't stop waving that bloody stand around, I'll ram it up it up his arse'
There was a night at the Astoria (can't remember the name) & the Marquee was good if I was channelling my inner rock chick.

Mammyloveswine · 23/02/2022 11:21

Love the 90s! Such a variety in the charts!

Pulp, blur, boyzone, take that, prodigy, spice girls, oasis...

I hadn't thought of it like that but that's a really interesting point. I often get really annoyed about people posting on FB and the like about being gutted over a celebrity death, but here I am! I guess I've never understood how connected people feel to celebs, but this feels different since he wasn't one, even though it clearly isn't! I'm sorry that you're feeling his loss so hard too.

Hopefully in time you'll feel like picking it up as it's a fantastic book, he's an amazing writer, as you know. I devour musician and addiction memoirs and his is one of the best I've read, I was right there with him the whole way through.

Candy flip

Frazzlerock · 23/02/2022 13:59

@maddy68 ahhhhh I LOVED Strawberry Fields Forever

Bloodyshittystorms · 23/02/2022 14:54

Has anyone mentioned Shed Seven?

Weirdly. The lead singer Danny is now one of my closest friends. I had no idea who he was. Such a lovely man

Mollysocks · 23/02/2022 17:52

@Bloodyshittystorms

Has anyone mentioned Shed Seven?
Yes me, absolutely loved (well still do) Shed Seven! Still belt out Chasing Rainbows when I can! Grin
CheesyChipsOnWembleyWay · 23/02/2022 18:45

I'm off to see Shed 7 next month.

Saw Sleeper and The Bluetones last year, though the Bluetones will always be tainted now due to Mark Morris.

I try not to get stuck in the 90s but they were fabulous years

Buzzinwithbez · 23/02/2022 19:23

Has anyone mentioned Sneaker Pimps, or
Faithless. I loved the cross over into the dance music scene.

The Levellers always seemed accessible as they toured such a lot.
We saw The Levellers, Therapy and Terrorvision at a small festival in 2019 and all were great. Tony Wright from Terrorvision does a brilliant solo set too.

The Wonderstuff still do a brilliant set and Skunk Anansie are just wow.
We went to see Norman Cook in 2019..I thought the crowd might be a bit edgy, but it was one of the loveliest crowds to be in.

maddy68 · 23/02/2022 19:24

You should all head to Kendal calling festival. Loads of these bands are playing there

Buzzinwithbez · 23/02/2022 19:26

Regret never seeing Portishead. They were on a T in the park when it rained constantly and we had to go home early as both the tent and my doctor martens were both waterlogged.

Jellykat · 23/02/2022 19:43

OMG BuzzinwithBez, i'd completely forgotten about Sneaker Pimps!

My DS1 stole my original copy of Becoming X, and ive never been able to get another copy, the remixed/ American version seems watered down (especially Spin spin sugar) Sad

Snoopsnoggysnog · 23/02/2022 21:03

Has anyone mentioned Morcheeba, absolutely loved them, and saw them at a festival in 2018, brilliant set and her voice was amazing

Frazzlerock · 24/02/2022 11:08

@maddy68 how lovely! You can tell him I used to go mad when it came on at Collide-a-scope in London. I may have even asked for it several times Grin
