So we've got Dudley today and tomorrow and Eunice on Friday so thought I'd start a thread. Dudley has barely hit here in Edinburgh and already there's a flight from LHR struggling to land.

So pleased I've found this thread! I'm hooked on FR

Is the LEB-KPO flight over Ukraine (was AAAAAA) a drone do we think?

Hiyawotcha · 18/02/2022 09:19

I love the NOISE! These pilots certainly earn their money. Such responsibility.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 18/02/2022 09:20

squeaky bum time on that kuwait plane. Shock

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about these subjects:

@Maerchentante

“ Just out of curiosity a question for our resident (former) pilots: Why would they not have a bigger gap between arrivals at LHR today? Or did they factor it in and it's "filled" with the go arounds?”

Somebody currently working there might be better placed to explain what they do now, but I suspect with Covid still impacting flight numbers ATC can use the naturally occurring gaps for go-around traffic coming back for another go.

The problem with deliberately systematically putting bigger gaps between every arrival is it reduces the rate at which aircraft can land (landings per/hour reduces). Pre Covid, when LHR was at capacity, if it was known from the forecast that go-around were going to be a possibility the Airport Operator (HAL) would start telling airlines (especially the resident ones with lots of shorthaul flights) to cancel a percentage of flights in order to generate a bit of flex to cater for the disruption.

FurryGrowler · 18/02/2022 09:30

@Hiyawotcha

Oh god - now I’m watching big jet tv alongside tracking on flight radar. There goes my day!
Me too.

This is absolutely freaking awesome 🤩

fizzypiggy · 18/02/2022 09:32

Would not want to be on that milan - Heathrow plane just then Shock

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 18/02/2022 09:33

Alitalia (sp?) pilot thought better of that and is having another go.

Pennox · 18/02/2022 09:36

Thank you very much :)

Not being back to pre-pandemic levels might be a good thing, then.
In normal times I can see the planes lined up like a string of pearls, that's definitely not happening at the moment.

BasiliskStare · 18/02/2022 09:40

Well just to say I have spoken to DH - landed Heathrow short while ago - He said it was bumpy but not the worst he has had ( he is not a pilot - so a layman's view )

BarbaraofSeville · 18/02/2022 09:43

There's a flight from Stockholm that's also appeared to not been able to land.
notimagain · 18/02/2022 09:43

Didn’t see what happened ? Very low go-around presumably?

Basically every landing is a potential go-around, right until the reverse thrust is selected, so if for example there’s a big gust of wind just before (or even as or just after ) you touch down it might well be safer to apply power and climb away.

liveforsummer · 18/02/2022 09:46

I seem to be missing all the action - every LHR flight I click on just flys straight in and pops it down. Trying to watch to many things at once I think 😆

notimagain · 18/02/2022 09:49

@BarbaraofSeville

There’s probably going to be a few going around for the next three or for hours if they catch a gust.

We are just starting to get into the bit of the forecast where the wind is supposedly going to be at it’s worse in terms of Cross winds at Heathrow, a chance of gusts out of the south west of up to 65 knots (75 mph)..which will be outside most if not all aircraft’s crosswind limits.

We may well see fewer takeoffs since the crosswind limits on those can actually be lower than the ones for landing.

Now I really have to get some work done!!!

BabbleBee · 18/02/2022 09:54

Wind shear warning on the flight deck
CaveMum · 18/02/2022 09:55

Jeez! Just watched the Stockholm flight land at Heathrow on Big Jet TV, it was all over the place! My tummy felt dodgy just watching it!

BabbleBee · 18/02/2022 10:01

I reckon Jerry is going to get annoyed with the woman keep talking to him Grin

Yes definitely
CaveMum · 18/02/2022 10:12

How in the name of all that is holy did that BA pilot get that flight from Chicago down?! He was sideways for half the approach! Someone buy that pilot a drink!

Maerchentante · 18/02/2022 10:14

So, so glad I don't have to be on a plane today. I really hope that the airlines double up on airsickness bags today.

liveforsummer · 18/02/2022 10:14

Flight radar showing the Chicago flight going around. Didn't get below 2000ft

It's not down is it?
Pennox · 18/02/2022 10:14

Holy crap its a lot harder than it looks on Flight Radar!

ErrolTheDragon · 18/02/2022 10:16

And the next one from Vienna also gone round

notimagain · 18/02/2022 10:17

Wind shear warning on the flight deck

That’s pretty definitive, what was the source Hmm?
