So we've got Dudley today and tomorrow and Eunice on Friday so thought I'd start a thread. Dudley has barely hit here in Edinburgh and already there's a flight from LHR struggling to land.

@timetochangeusername

Wonder where the US airforce that's just crossed Scotland is heading...
It's squawk code is 2274

2202-2277 codes apparently mean: Superdomestic UK to LF, LE, LP, GC and FA

Pinotpleasure · 16/02/2022 23:30

@timetochangeusername - somewhere in or near the Ukraine perhaps?

It was incredible watching Flightradar24 last August when it showed the US and British military planes doing the evacuations out of Kabul airport, Afghanistan 😢😨

Pennox · 16/02/2022 23:30

I’d love it if he spelt out FO MN

The unidentified doughnut plane has an 'ICAO 24 bit address' starting with AE - as does that us military which went over Scotland and another unidentified US near Iceland. So I'm guessing all US military.

Abraxan · 16/02/2022 23:31

These are some of the codes used: www.flightradars.eu/squawkcodes.html

ErrolTheDragon · 16/02/2022 23:34

@Pennox

Donut boy has obviously got word Mn are watching him as he’s veered off now.
It looks as though it veers off but then gets back to the circling - like it's not being tracked accurately and the straight line is just an extrapolation of previous course rather than where it really is
FaoinDrualus · 16/02/2022 23:36

The easyjet Birmingham to Belfast looks like it’s having problems landing in Belfast … and it’s already an hour late. Poor passengers.

Pennox · 16/02/2022 23:37

Could it be a drone or automated plane? It’s altitude hasn’t varied at all.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/02/2022 23:45

@KenAdams

The one doing circles might be a P8 surveillance aircraft that monitors submarine activity and the like. If you've been following the Russia Ukraine conflict you'll note the positioning of subsea cables in that area.
That does seem like a good explanation. In which case I hope it carries on and has an uneventful night!
BoredZelda · 16/02/2022 23:47

Dammit! I was just going to bed and found this.

I used to live close enough to EDI to listen to the tower talking to the planes. I wish I had this app then!

BoredZelda · 16/02/2022 23:47

*listen on a shortwave radio. I don’t have ultrasonic hearing 😆

The US plane of unknown departure or destination was Harding for Denmark but has just changed direction

DP was on an EasyJet flight during the peak of storm Arwen in November. Was due to land at Liverpool at 10pm.

3 aborted landings at Liverpool, 2 aborted landings at Manchester, eventually landed at East Midlands. Pilot came into cabin and told everyone that was the worst landing conditions he had encountered in 25 years. DP said it was absolutely awful and lots of people were crying and a few being sick with all the turbulence.

Passengers could not leave the plane for over 90 mins due to airport ground staff shortages. By the time they had disembarked and gone through passport control and waited a further 60 mins for their bags they were told that the bus to take them back to Liverpool had given up and left!

Passengers were told there was no hotels with sufficient space for everyone so it was suggested that everyone should make there own way home and claim the cost back at 2.30am.

Everyone refused so after another hour of arguments eventually EasyJet agreed to hire taxi's to take all passengers to Liverpool airport. Poor DP got home at 8am.

Hmm. Flying from Gatwick to Belfast Friday evening. Not sure that is such a great plan now...

OliviaBond · 16/02/2022 23:57

Why is hardly anyone landing at Gatwick or Heathrow?

liveforsummer · 17/02/2022 00:02

Are there time restrictions to landings at the city airports maybe?

There’s a glider up near Luton Confused

Night time flight restrictions.
MMBaranova · 17/02/2022 00:04

Yes the looper N W of Ireland is probably monitoring a Russian submarine.

It would be land based. I don't see an aircraft carrier in the area (the nearest US one at sea seems to be in the Adriatic).

They both have a lot of ground vehicles out working. If you zoom in close you can see grey squares moving about.
Electriq · 17/02/2022 00:07

Gatwick has been very light on flights since covid started, but both airports have night time restrictions 11.30pm - 6am and noisy aircraft have different times too.

Oh I see. Thanks

No, it's not moving. They've left the thingy switched on. Altitude shown will be because it is parked at the gliding club on the Dunstable Downs.
starfishmummy · 17/02/2022 00:10

@OliviaBond

Why is hardly anyone landing at Gatwick or Heathrow?
@OliviaBond there are voluntary restrictions at Heathrow

At Heathrow we do not have any scheduled departures between 22:50 - 06:00 or scheduled arrivals between 22:55 - 04:40. This means that there are no scheduled flights after 22:55 and before 04:40.

Gatwick probably does similar

It's crossed most of Denmark now and seems to be heading towards Poland.
