Can you stop people being able to see when you're using whatsapp?

I was on whatsapp at 3:30 am (innocently) and somebody commented on it ... kinda annoying!
I don't want to necessarily block them.

Yes, you turn off the blue ticks in settings and I think that also stops your visibility.

TibetanTerrah · 15/02/2022 15:51

You can turn off your last seen in settings but if you're online the same time as they, they can still see that.

TibetanTerrah · 15/02/2022 15:51

Them not they Hmm

Londono · 15/02/2022 16:40

@TibetanTerrah is right. You can't stop them seeing if you are online even if you turn read receipts off.

TableLampy · 15/02/2022 16:42

You can im sure. It’s not about blue ticks, it’s the privacy and status options

PostThenGhost · 15/02/2022 16:44

DSis never comes up as whatever time she was last on but blue ticks do show when she’s read my messages.

I keep meaning to ask her how she’s done it. Hoping someone here can tell me.

TableLampy · 15/02/2022 16:45

Ooh I’ve done it. Thanks!
NellyDElephant · 15/02/2022 16:46

You have to turn your own ‘last seen’ online off, for everyone else, then you can’t see theirs and they can’t see yours. That’s the only way.

Yes I'm interested in this as well but all of these tricks don't help. They can still see you if you're both online at the same time can't they.

No I don’t think so, you hide your online presence to all at all times
Crinkle77 · 15/02/2022 18:27

Why are you bothered that someone knows you were online at 3.30am?

WeeWeeMe · 15/02/2022 19:46

cos' their behaviour has started to border on the stalkerish lately and this has annoyed me.
I should (and probably will eventually) block them but I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for a while.

I wish Whatsapp would provide a means of leaving a group without announcing it to everyone. From what I have observed, if you either leave or delete the account, your groups will get a "Name has left the group" message.
I'm bothered by this because my mum recently passed away. She gave me access to her account and I would like to delete it, but don't want all her grandchildren, neighbours, friends to suddenly get a message to say she has left their group.

Grandadwasthatyou · 15/02/2022 20:10

@WeeWeeMe .... it's true that you can turn off your " last seen" and blue ticks but there is no way you can prevent somebody seeing you are online ( as far as I know).

Grandadwasthatyou · 15/02/2022 20:14

I assume you are talking about an ex possibly? I turned off last seen and blue ticks but my ex always knew when I had been online.

Sorry to ask another question on the back of your thread but if somebody closes their phone with the WhatsApp screen still open does it look like they are online when in fact they could be asleep?

WeeWeeMe · 15/02/2022 20:23

Not an ex, some dipstick I work with.

@benchmarked
That's a good point, I'd like to leave some groups as well without people knowing.

There really is. It’s under status and last seen in the privacy settings as has been said several times already

snowcabin · 15/02/2022 20:42

@TableLampy this is very passive aggressive for someone that misred pp - they're saying you don't seem to be able to turn off "online". Not that you can't turn off "last seen"..

TyrannosaurusRegina · 15/02/2022 21:00

@TableLampy you're wrong. "As has been said several times already", you can turn off 'last seen' but you can't turn off 'online'.

WildfirePonie · 15/02/2022 21:00

Just block him.

You can turn them both off

daisypond · 15/02/2022 21:04

“Online” only means online while using WhatsApp, it doesn’t mean online in general.
