Can you stop people being able to see when you're using whatsapp?

I was on whatsapp at 3:30 am (innocently) and somebody commented on it ... kinda annoying!
I don't want to necessarily block them.

Turning off status in the settings means turning off whether you show as online or not doesn’t it?

I think so. DSis never shows up online or last seen but I see ‘typing’ when she is actually responding to me.
Grandadwasthatyou · 15/02/2022 21:13

There appears to be some confusion here.
@TableLampy .. I am not sure that Status means showing whether you are online or not. I think it's something to do with you putting out a message to all your contacts which disappears after 24 hours.
I still stand by my comment that there is no way you can hide from showing people you are online but apologise if I am proved wrong.

@benchmarked if you don't leave the group's now, when (if) you decide to cancel the phone contract (assuming it is one) it will 'kick you out' automatically. Even worse once the number gets reused. Not nice either way

PilatesPeach · 15/02/2022 21:28

I don't think you can turn off "online" I have everything turned off that I can but online seems to remain.

Teddybearen · 15/02/2022 21:33

I just tested it, turned off my status and last seen but am still showing as online on ds’s WhatsApp. Which is weird because I therefore have the ability to hide when I was last online, but not that I am online now. That makes no sense!

The number has been moved to a payg sim, so no worries on that score. But I still would prefer to close the whatsapp account.

Yes, you can't hide that. But unless your annoying person had also happened to be on WhatsApp when you were, at 3.30, that wouldn't matter much. I assume it was the 'last seen' that they responded to.

@WeeWeeMe
@benchmarked

My family loooove creating groups so here's my solution:
'Mute' notifications for each group/conversation, then 'Archive' the chat. Technically still part of it but not getting any the messages or notifications!

Heartofglass12345 · 15/02/2022 22:37

I think I always show up as online even when I'm not using it, I have no idea how to turn it off

Grandadwasthatyou · 16/02/2022 10:06

@Teddybearen you are right on both counts.
